Formulations for the Very Special Needs of Pregnant Women, Nursing Mothers and Their Babies The Finest Nutritional Supplements J.R. Carlson Laboratories, Inc.
A woman s needs are higher during pregnancy than any other time of her adult life. Physiological events bring major changes to the mother, while creating a whole, new human being within. Nutritional intake can affect the health of both mother and child. From conception until birth, the infant is growing, developing and taking in nourishment. Maintaining optimal health during pregnancy is an important issue for ensuring the welfare of the expectant mother and her infant. Nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals and DHA, are key factors to continued health throughout pregnancy and the baby s development. Healthy development before birth benefits a child throughout infancy and childhood. Optimal nutrition for a pregnant or breastfeeding mother ensures her health is not diminished while she provides nutrients for her child. DHA for Healthy Vision, Brain Function & More DHA For pregnant and breastfeeding women, adequate amounts of DHA are vitally important to their developing child. DHA is recognized in today s scientific research as a vital nutrient for promoting and supporting healthy brain, nerve, vision, immune, and cardiovascular systems, as well as healthy skin. DHA is a building block of the eyes and the brain. This very important omega-3 is one of the most polyunsaturated fatty acids.
Minerals and Nutrients for Healthy Bone Development Pregnant women require higher amounts of all nutrients involved in building strong, healthy bones and teeth. Minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D have an established relationship and a vital role in bone and teeth development. Carlson PreNatal Multiple with DHA provides calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D; all vital nutrients in bone and dental development of the baby. Calcium Calcium is the most abundant mineral within the body. It is essential for strong bones, teeth, muscle contractions (including the heart), proper nerve functioning, and support of the body s defenses. An ample supply of calcium is critical for both the mother and the developing baby. To help provide more calcium for the baby s growth, the mother needs more calcium. Vitamin D The relationship between vitamin D and calcium has long been established. Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption in both the mother and child; thereby, becoming critical during bone development for the fetus. Magnesium Research shows many individuals obtain less than the recommended amounts of magnesium. Magnesium is involved in bone development, muscle relaxation & contraction, and energy production.
A Mother s Nutritional Needs Increase Greatly during Pregnancy and Lactation. Vitamins A, C, E & the Mineral Selenium Vitamin E 100% Natural-Source Vitamin E with Higher Biological Activity & Greater Fetal Absorption Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect cells from free radicals. During pregnancy, a woman s body is working harder and optimal vitamin E levels play an important role in maintaining healthy cells. Vitamin E is especially important for healthy red blood cells for both the mother-to-be and her child. Vitamin E is also important for a healthy immune system. Higher vitamin E levels during pregnancy may help promote healthy lung and immune function during childhood. A woman s body discriminates between natural and synthetic sources of vitamin E during pregnancy. Both the fetal liver and placental-fetal unit have a preference for natural-source vitamin E. Natural-source vitamin E is passed along through the cord blood to the fetus 3.5 times better than synthetic vitamin E. Pharmaceutical brands of pre-natal vitamins may use synthetic vitamin E, which has half the biological activity of Carlson natural-source vitamin E.* All Carlson formulas (since our beginning in 1965) utilize only natural-source vitamin E. Acuff, R., et al. Transport of deuterium-labeled tocopherols during pregnancy. Am. J. Clin. Nutr., 1998; 67: DRI (Dietary Reference Intakes) Institute of Medicine, Nat l Academy of Science, *(by weight) American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2006; 174: Vitamin C Ample Vitamin C Vitamin C is required for the synthesis of collagen for the connective tissue of blood vessels, skin, tendons, ligaments and bone. It is required for energy production, neurotransmitters, and the absorption of iron. Vitamin C is also an important antioxidant that promotes a healthy immune system. Selenium Organically-Bound and Complexed to Support Utilization One of the many ways our body uses selenium is to form important immune supporting enzymes, such as glutathione peroxidase. Glutathione peroxidase fights free radicals to help keep cells healthy. Vitamin A 100% Daily Value Recent research indicates that vitamin A supplementation supports the healthy development of the unborn child. Clinical findings recommend that women take a multi-vitamin supplement containing moderate amounts of vitamin A of less than 10,000 IU prior to and during pregnancy and lactation. All statements regarding Vitamin A in the brochure are included in the reference - Prevention of Congenial Abnormalities by Vitamin A in International Journal of Vitamin Research, 68 (1998).
Many Nutrients are Needed for the Healthy Development of the Infant. Iron Chelated Iron to Support Absorption Iron is a component of many proteins and enzymes required for health and growth, including hemoglobin, a protein that transports oxygen throughout the body. A women s blood volume increases 50% during pregnancy to help provide nourishment for her growing baby, and her need for iron increases. Supplemental iron, during pregnancy and lactation, helps to ensure healthy iron levels for the mother and a healthy iron status for her baby. Because an ample supply of dietary iron is important during pregnancy, Carlson chooses a chelated form of iron to support absorption. The iron status of infants is improved, if their mothers took iron supplements. Their mean length and Apgar scores were higher as well. Am. J. Clin. Nutr., 1997; 66: Folate (Folic Acid) Ample Folate 800 mcg This widely researched B vitamin plays a critical role in maintaining healthy blood, interacting with other vitamins, and being essential for the synthesis of genetic material. Recent research has shown that inadequate amounts of folate may lead to complications associated with pregnancy and fetal development. Assuring adequate folic acid intake has been shown to reduce the risk of serious neural tube defects in the developing infant. Czeizel, A. and Dudas, I. Prevention of the first occurrence of neural-tube defects by periconceptional vitamin supplementation. New England Jour. Med., 1992; 327: Scholl, T. et al. Dietary and serum folate: Their influence on the outcome of pregnancy. Am. J. Clin. Nutr., 1996; 63: Vitamin B-6 Ample B-6 Vitamin B-6 is involved in a variety of processes within our body, especially in carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism. Research has also shown its importance in supporting the immune system by aiding in the production of antibodies and red blood cells. Vitamin B-6 also helps maintain blood glucose (sugar) within a healthy range. It helps the release of glucose from stored glycogen and the synthesis of glucose from amino acids. Vitamin B-12 Ample B-12 During pregnancy, approximately four pounds of the mother s weight gain is due to the increase in blood volume. The demand for vitamin B-12 increases, at this time, as it is utilized to manufacture red blood cells.
