David Anthony Monteleone, son of Anthony and Agatha Altomare Monteleone, was born on October 24, He grew up in Nesconset, NY and attended Catholic elementary and high school. He earned a B.A. in History and Education from King s College in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and earned his M.S. in Elementary Education from Dowling College, Oakdale, NY. He attended Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, Huntington, NY and Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, CT. As a seminarian, he enjoyed a pastoral experience at St. Cecilia and Sacred Heart Church in Rockaway, NJ, and was ordained to the transitional deaconate on May 2, 2012 at St. Paul s Church, Clifton, NJ. Rev. Mr. David Monteleone was assigned to Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Sparta, NJ on June 24, Fr. David was ordained to the Sacred Order of the Priesthood on May 25, 2013, and his first assignment was as parochial vicar at St. Joseph s Parish, Mendham, NJ from June 28, 2013 to July 27, Effective July 28, 2016, Fr. 2 EAGLE SCOUT BUILDS STORAGE SHED FOR HOLY SPIRIT SCHOOL Boy Scout Troop 144, Pompton Plains, announced its newest Eagle Scout, Kurt Hill, at its Eagle Court of Honor held September 18 at Holy Spirit School. Holy Spirit, Kurt's parish, was the beneficiary of Kurt's Eagle Service Project which replaced a collapsed 12' x 24' storage shed. The design and construction of the weatherproof wooden building was made possible from donations of materials and funds from the parishioners and local businesses, as well as over 279 hours of labor provided by Kurt, the scouts and their leaders. The project involved demolition as well as construction to provide a much-needed permanent storage facility for Holy Spirit School. Sr. Marie Antonelli, principal of the school, gratefully presented a plaque of recognition and thanksgiving to Kurt for the building during the Court of Honor. Kurt was also recognized by both the Pequannock Township Council and its Board of Education. During the event Kurt recounted his scouting experiences and thanked his fellow scouts for bringing the project together, saying, "I don't exaggerate when I say scouting is a life changing experience. It's a journey that teaches young men many skills that are essential for real world success, not just simple orienteering and camping ability. In fact, scouting is only partially about how to survive in the natural world, but rather how to understand and work together with people from all walks of life". Kurt also drew inspiration for his ambitious project from his brothers, Chris and Kevin, who were both former Holy Spirit students and Eagle Scouts as well. Holy Spirit School News Please join us for the 11:00AM Mass on Sunday, November 20 when Holy Spirit School marks the beginning of their 60 th anniversary celebration with a Mass to be celebrated by Bishop Serratelli. HOSPITALITY SUNDAYS TO BEGIN IN NOVEMBER Beginning on Sunday, November 6, the Holy Spirit Parish Stewardship and Fellowship Committees will host a hospitality Sunday on the first Sunday of each month in the Seniors Room. For the Month of November, light refreshments will be offered in the Seniors room after the 9AM Mass. In December, hospitality will be held after the 11AM Mass. Beginning in January, the hospitality Sunday schedule will follow one Mass only (same time each month), and the schedule will be set based on which Mass has the greatest hospitality attendance. Light refreshments will be available, along with the opportunity for coffee and conversation. 4 BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS Many churches in the United States celebrate the Feast of St Francis of Assisi on or around October 4 each year. The feast commemorates the life of St Francis, who was born in the 12th century and is the Catholic Church s patron saint of animals and the environment. It is a popular day for pets to be blessed. On Sunday, October 16 at 2:00PM, on the front lawn of the rectory, Fr. David offered a Blessing of the animals for the pet family members of our parishioners. Pictured below, right, is Happy Kamper, following his blessing. Thanks to teen parishioner and Happy s owner, Max Kamper, for the photos. +++ANOINTING OF THE SICK+++ Fr. David will administer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick on the third Sunday of each month, following the 11AM Mass. Individuals with serious physical illness, psychological challenges, or those facing a major surgical procedure should take the opportunity for this special blessing. Individuals who are homebound and unable to to attend Mass can make an appointment to receive the Anointing of the Sick when needed by contacting the Parish Office at (973) , ext. 2. The special grace of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick has as its effects: + The uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church; +The strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or old age. The Holy Spirit Parish choir is actively recruiting new members. What joy it would bring to you personally, and how wonderful to give to the Lord some part of yourself in His liturgy! 5 HOLY SPIRIT PARISH RECEIVES HONOR L; Holy Spirit Parish is a key Partner of the Grains of Hope Coordinating Committee. As a significant financial sponsor, Holy Spirit Parish was honored through the presentation of a 2016 banner, which now hangs just inside the main doors of the church. More than 800 volunteers packaged 150,684 meals for the hungry at the most recent Grains of Hope packing day on Sunday, March 13, The bulk of the food was sent to Haiti where starvation remains a chronic problem, even before the most recent hurricane in September A portion also was contributed to the New Jersey Food Bank for their after school feeding programs. For many children, this is the only hot meal of the day, and it is by far the most nutritious. Permanent collection boxes in support of Grains of Hope are located inside the main doors to the church, as well as in the wing, and contributions can be made throughout the year. Every dollar contributed will purchase four nutritious meals for those in need. Prior to the next packing event (March 2017), Holy Spirit Parish will write one check to Grains of Hope for the total of all donations received through the boxes and special collections. THANKSGIVING ECUMENICAL SERVICE Each year during the week before Thanksgiving, the Christian churches in the area join together for an ecumenical Thanksgiving service. In 2015, Holy Spirit, Our Lady of Good Counsel, the First Reformed Church, and Our Savior Lutheran Church, all of Pequannock Township, and the Pequannock Reformed Church of Wayne were hosted by Good Counsel Church, with Fr. Tom of Holy Spirit, Rev. Kathleen of the First Reformed Church,, and Deacon Herb of Good Counsel as presiders.
