1 ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ROTATION OBJECTIVES FORM Purpose of Rotation: To gain experience in assessing environmental health needs of a population, investigating environmental health issues, assessing sociopolitical realities and advocating the appropriate action to improve health; plan, implement and evaluate environmental health programs and/or strategies; contribute to the formulation of public policy; collaborate and build partnerships; contribute to body of knowledge of community medicine and it relates to the domain of environmental health. Instructions: The form is to be completed, reviewed and signed off with your rotation supervisor before the start of each rotation. A signed copy is to be submitted to the Program Director no later than the first day of the rotation. Keep a copy for review at mid-unit evaluation and at final evaluation. At the end of each rotation, please complete the Evidence of Achievement of Objectives column of the form and review with your supervisor. Consider this information in the resident, faculty and site evaluations. Then, sign the form along with your supervisor and resubmit to your Program Director. Demonstrate the ability to gather information, analyze and describe the health of the population as it pertains to the environmental health issue at hand. Demonstrate ability to interpret epidemiologic studies and apply knowledge in a particular situation. Demonstrate skill in investigating and managing an environmental health hazard. Demonstrate knowledge in the development and implementation of surveillance and control methods. Understand the principles of toxicology. Understand the characteristics and methods for monitoring water, soil food and air. Ability to access and interpret existing environmental health data sources and indicators, demographics, social and economic factors, epidemiologic data, risk assessment, hazard analysis. Identify and understand health impacts of physical environmental factors including noise, pollutants, industrial processes relevant to a given problem. Describe the natural history, epidemiology, risk factors, health burden and control measures for the major environmental health hazards and diseases. Describe the main methods of dealing with common environmental issues such as water and sewage treatment, quality control of food, water, air and soil. Carry out a risk assessment of an environmental hazard. Apply principles and strategies of harm reduction, health protection, disease prevention, and health promotion to a variety of environmental and occupational health risks. Contribute to the development of a community emergency response plan, including measures to prevent and manage biological, chemical and radiological agents. Use appropriate legislation in response to an environmental issue. Undertake a cluster investigation
