In addition to his strong clinical reputation at Pine Rest, Dr. Van Eerden was administratively responsible for the establishment of the partial hospitalization program, the older adult unit, was the first director of adult services, the first director of the psychiatric residency program, and cared for thousands of patients over his years of service. In his practice, Dr. Van Eerden combined a commitment to the highest psychiatric standards with a deep concern for the integration of faith and behavioral health care. The goal of this series will be to help establish a legacy of an education and learning culture at Pine Rest in keeping with Dr. Van Eerden s values, life and professional practice. Ultimately, the program will improve the lives of those in our community through training in excellent care. This program also represents an extension of Pine Rest s strategic plan which calls for superior clinical outcomes, outstanding customer service and the creation of a great place to work one where lifelong learning as well as professional and personal growth is encouraged and nurtured. 2 WILLIAM VAN EERDEN, MD LECTURE SERIES Sessions Decision-Making Capacity and Competency: Practical Issues As derived from the principle of respect for autonomy, patients must be informed about, and allowed to participate to the extent that they are able, in decisions and choices about their medical care. In order to make autonomous choices, these decisions must be voluntary, not coerced and based on reasoning. For those patients who are unable to make autonomous choices, clinicians must be able to help with issues related to decision-making capacity and all that follows. The presentation will address several topics related to capacity, competency and surrogate-decision making. 1:00 2:45 p.m. Keynote Speaker, Michelle B. Riba, MD, MS Panel Discussion The second afternoon session will feature a panel discussion of case presentations which will elucidate the principles of capacity determination presented in Dr. Riba s earlier lecture. The panel will include residents and residency faculty with Dr. Riba serving as moderator and host. Residents will present varied and interesting cases of capacity illustrating sensitive ethical considerations for panel discussion and audience participation. 3:00 4:30 p.m. Panel Discussion: Sameh Dwaikat, MD, Madhavi Nagalla, MD and William Sanders, DO Objectives 1. State the professionals who generally determine capacity and competence and review the exemptions to informed consent. 2. Discuss the four aspects of decision-making that a person must be able to demonstrate. 3. Receive an understanding of different scenarios in which capacity consultations are requested to provide best care to patients and resources available to the clinician in difficult situations.

3 Keynote Speaker Michelle B. Riba, MD, MS Dr. Riba is Professor and Associate Chair for Integrated Medicine and Psychiatric Services and Associate Director of the University of Michigan Comprehensive Depression Center, Director of the PsychOncology Program at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center and Director, Psychosomatic Fellowship Program. She has served on numerous editorial boards and is the author Michelle B. Riba, MD, MS or editor of over 200 scientific articles, books, chapters and scientific abstracts. Dr. Riba is Past President of the American Psychiatric Association, the Association for Academic Psychiatry and American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training. She has served as the representative to the World Psychiatric Association from the APA and is currently WPA Secretary for Scientific Publications. As a psychosomatic medicine psychiatrist, her clinical and research interests include collaborative care, psychoncology, depression and cardiovascular disease, and screening for distress in patients with medical illness.
