1 Using Educational technologies Day 2: Importing, editing and publishing film with Windows Movie Maker In your groups, you have each recorded a short film clip where you have presented your ideas on using video (and audio) to engage and motivate your students. These clips should now be available to you in a folder on your desktop (ed_techs_ht13_film). You will import these clips into Windows Movie Maker (WLMM). You will add titles and credits as well as transitions and music if appropriate. This guide will run you through the basics of how you do this. Once you have a short film comprising your group s film clips you will publish your version of the film on Youtube (unlisted) and add the link to our sandpit in the Discussion forum. Create a forum for your group. 1. Open WMM from Start > Program > Movie Maker (alt Windows Live Movie Maker). 2. When you open the program you will see this view. Import film clips by clicking on Add videos under the Home tab: It can take a few minutes for the videos to be imported to WMM depending on the length of your films. In the next window you can see the video clips in the Timeline area of the program. To the left you see the Preview monitor. At the top of the window you see the menu bar, with tabs for editing settings etc. You should start by saving your project (.wlmp). The project is the file name for the WMM and whatever settings you apply to the video clips including transitions etc.

2 3. Click on the Project tab and check that you have Widescreen 16:9 option chosen for your project. Add Text: 4. You should now add a Title, Credits and Captions between your video clips. Go back to the Home tab and click on Title:

When you click on Title the tab opens for the Text Tools editor: As you can see in the picture above you can now add a title to your film, you can change the background color, format your text and set the duration for the Title to show in your film as well as choosing which. As you can see to the right of the picture you now see a Text object in the Timeline, followed by the other video clips. 6. To add Captions and Credits you click on the Home tab to get back to the text tools options. When you add these you will see that they appear in your timeline with an A and a pink block which indicates duration of each object. Remember to save your project regularly! 7. You can preview your film so far in the Preview monitor to the left. Adding music: 8. Under Document in the event in Ping Pong you will find a music file (mp3) called cloud_song.mp3. WMM also gives you a link to the where you can find something you like. Download the music file and save it on your desktop.

4 9. Click on the Home tab and then Add music at the beginning and the end of your film for the same duration given for the Title and Credits. Test the effects for toning in and out for music files. When you add your music file you will want it to play for a limited duration, fading in and out. In this image you can see that the music file (the green block in the Timeline) plays for 7 seconds, fading in slowly and fading out fast. Test the settings for your film and choose whichever one works for you. Save your project! Edit video clip 10. When you double click on a video clip you can make simple edits to the clip, such as fading in and out, changing the volume of the clip. Here you can see which choices you have:

5 11. One simple edit you might want to do is to Trim the video clip for example if you didn t start talking in time. You may also want to divide a clip in two. To do this click first on Trim tool. 12. In the next window you see the Trim tool. Only simple edits can be made, for example if you want to trim a clip by removing the second half then click in the player for the point where you want to cut the film and then you will see the time point you chose added to the End point in the Trim window: 13. Splitting a video clip: If you need to remove a few seconds in the middle of a clip then you must first cut the film into two sections and then trim the section with the extra bit that you want to remove. To to this go back to the Home tab > Edit and click on Split. Make sure your cursor is at the right place in the video!

6 Adding transitions between video clips 14. Since you have 3-4 video clips with different group members telling their tip for videos in teaching you may want to add a transition between each presenter. You click first on the Animations tab to access your transition options. You choose a transition for a video clip. In this picture you can see a grey triangle indicating that the transition has been added successfully. You can also set the duration for each transition. Tip: Do not use too many different options for transitions between clips in one film. Saving your film 15. So far you have saved your project. Now it is time to publish your finished product ie your film with the group presenting their suggestions. Return to the Home tab. Choose Save movie. Please note that on the computers in the library you cannot choose to upload directly to Youtube. You can probably do so at home/in your office. 16. Under Save movie choose Recommended for this project. (IF we are short of time in class we will probably need to choose For . Check with your teachers). Save the file on your desktop.

7 Upload your film to Youtube 1. Use your Google account to login into 2. Click first on Upload then choose the Unlisted option for the Privacy setting. Select the file you want to upload. 3. Your film will now upload to the site. Add tags, description etc to your film. Please note: you must choose either Public or Unlisted if you want to embed your film in Ping Pong. You will not be able to embed a film with a Private listing. Copy the link to your film under the tick beside the thumbnail for your film:

8 4. Click on Advanced settings if you want to give your film a Creative Commons license. Removing a film 5. If you want to remove your film at a later date (or remove another film you have created) then click on the arrow by your user name in the top right hand corner. Choose the Video Manager. 6. Tick the box by the film you want to remove. Click on the arrow to the right of Edit and choose Delete:
