1 Eleven 50 mins sessions over 2 weeks- EML=4periods, DAH= 4 periods, GSPL= 3 periods RESOURCES: Course Book AQA Spanish, A Level Year 1 and AS Each student is also issued with their own personal copy of: Collins billingual dictionary, Acción Gramática, The Big Red Book of Spanish Vocabulary, Palabra por palabra and Animo AS/A2 Grammar workbook. Despite having a textbook the vast majority of resources are taken and adapted from real sources such as the Internet, newspapers and magazines. ICT- Students will regularly use the Moodle course created by teachers and available via the school s website to supplement their studies in the classroom and to expand their horizons in terms of independent learning and research. They will have access to Kerboodle, linked to the AQA textbook and to Oxbox, both interactive resources used for additional material and assessments, an Interactive Grammar workbook, Vocab Express and an array of practice papers and audio files. The School Learning and Resource Centre (LRC) has a wide collection of titles covering Spanish and South-American history, civilisation and literature. The Department also has a large collection of literary texts covering all periods from the medieval to the contemporary. DVDs-the department's collection of DVDs suitable for Sixth-Form is constantly growing. The students are encouraged to take films home regularly. The Spanish assistant will see each student individually 25 mins per week. They will develop the topics studied in class, will expand the students cultural knowledge of Spain and will help them with their oral exam preparation.
2 The school has opted for the AQA board and the topics to be studied are divided into two main areas: 1. Aspects of Hispanic society Students may study all sub-themes in relation to any Spanish-speaking country or countries. Modern and traditional values (Los valores tradicionales y modernos) o Los cambios en la familia o Actitudes hacia el matrimonio/el divorcio o La influencia de la Iglesia Católica Cyberspace (El ciberespacio) o La influencia de internet o Las redes sociales: beneficios y peligros o Los móviles inteligentes en nuestra sociedad Equal rights (La igualdad de los sexos) o La mujer en el mercado laboral o El machismo y el feminismo o Los derechos de los gays y las personas transgénero 2. Artistic culture in the Hispanic world Students must study the sub-theme Spanish regional identity in relation to Spain. Students may study the remaining sub-themes in relation to any Spanish-speaking country or countries. 3. Modern day idols (La influencia de los ídolos) a. Cantantes y músicos b. Estrellas de televisión y cine c. Modelos 4. Spanish regional identity (La identidad regional en España) a. Tradiciones y costumbres b. La gastronomía c. Las lenguas 5. Cultural heritage (El patrimonio cultural) a. Sitios turísticos y civilizaciones prehispánicas: Machu Picchu, la Alhambra, etc b. Arte y arquitectura c. El patrimonio musical y su diversidad 3. Literary texts and films Students must study either one text or one film from a list provided by AQA.

Puente: Introduction to Spain, geography, autonomous communities and regional languages, key people and places in the Spanish-speaking world. 2. Intensive Grammar programme: Revision of all the verb tenses covered for IGCSE (Present, Present Continuous, Preterite, Imperfect, Perfect, Future, Conditional, Imperative, Present Subjunctive), including irregular, reflexive and stem-changing verbs, gustar friends. Use of accents. 3. Topic 1- Los valores tradicionales y modernos. Los cambios en la familia Actitudes hacia el matrimonio y el divorcio La influencia de la Iglesia Católica Grammar objectives and skills linked to theme: use of Imperfect, Imperfect continuous, Preterite and Preterite and Imperfect together. Recognising cognates. Knowing when to use accents. Connecting nouns to their corresponding verbs. Assessment aims: By the end of every unit the students should have compiled a detailed list of topic related vocabulary, written at least one topic related essay and practised talking about an exam type card. There will be a grammar assessment at the end of the term.
4 SPRING TERM Topic 5. La identidad regional en España Tradiciones y costumbres La gastronomía Las lenguas Grammar objectives and skills linked to theme: Use the Present Subjunctive, Use the Perfect tense in the Subjunctive, use numerals. Improve your listening skills, identify correct and incorrect sentences, fill in gaps in a text. Topic 6: El Patrimonio cultural: Arte y arquitectura in Spain El patrimonio musical y su diversidad- focusing in Spain Grammar objectives and skills linked to theme: Use the Subjunctive efficiently, use pronouns efficiently and use the Imperative. Use the Internet to enhance your work, break down comprehension tasks, recognise irregular endings (nouns ending in ma) Assessment aims: By the end of every unit the students should have compiled a detailed list of topic related vocabulary, written at least one topic related essay and practised talking about an exam type card. There will be a grammar assessment at the end of the term. The end of term and the Easter holiday will be dedicated to revise and prepare for the internal examination, with plenty of paper practice and exam technique exercises. SUMMER TERM After the internal examinations we will start preparing for the A Level syllabus and most of the term will be used to introduce the literature part of the course. We will use the Dossier de Literatura from the textbook as a starting point to learn vocabulary of literature, the story, themes, characters, author techniques and style, and social environment. We will also explore how to write essays on literary texts in terms of structure, vocabulary and use of quotes. We will look at a variety of literature from the Latin world including poetry.

Intensive Grammar programme: Revision of gender markers, collective nouns; shortening and position of adjectives, shortened adj, suffixes; making comparisons and using superlatives; pronouns (personal, reflexive, impersonal, direct and indirect, prepositional, relative, possessive, demonstrative, personal a ); negatives; ser vs estar and por vs para. 3. Topic 3: El ciberespacio La influencia del Internet Los moviles inteligentes en nuestra sociedad Las redes sociales: beneficios y peligros Grammar objectives and skills objectives linked to theme: Use of Present and Present Continuous, Use of Comparatives, Ser vs Estar, use of Future and Conditional. Writing a summary based on listening, use expressions to give pros and cons, use idiomatic expressions with impersonal verbs. Assessment aims: By the end of every unit the students should have compiled a detailed list of topic related vocabulary, written at least one topic related essay and practised talking about an exam type card.
6 SPRING TERM Topic 3: La igualdad de sexos: La mujer en el mercado laboral El machismo y el feminismo Los derechos de los gays y las personas transgénero Grammar objectives and skills linked to theme: use indefinite adjectives and pronouns, use the Perfect, Pluperfect, Future Perfect and the Conditional Perfect tenses. Improve your translation skills, listen for gist and detail, recongise words ending in -ity. Topic 6: El Patrimonio cultural: Sitios históricos y civilizaciones prehispánicas Arte y arquitectura en Latinoamérica El patrimonio musical y su diversidad- focusing in Latin America Grammar objectives and skills linked to theme: Use the Subjunctive efficiently, use pronouns efficiently and use the Imperative. Use the Internet to enhance your work, break down comprehension tasks. Assessment aims: By the end of every unit the students should have compiled a detailed list of topic related vocabulary, written at least one topic related essay and practised talking about a exam type card. The end of term and the Easter holiday will be dedicated to revise and prepare for the internal examination, with plenty of paper practice and exam technique exercises. SUMMER TERM Share with GSPL After the internal examinations we will start preparing for the A Level syllabus and most of the term will be used to introduce the Independent Research Project carried out by the students, who must identify a subject or a key question which is of interest to them and which relates to a country or countries where Spanish is spoken. They must select relevant information in Spanish from a range of sources including the internet. The aim of the research project is to develop research skills. Students will demonstrate their ability to initiate and conduct individual research by analysing and summarising their findings, in order to present and discuss them in the speaking assessment. Students may choose a subject linked to one of the themes or sub-themes or to one of the works. However, students must not base their research on the same literary text or film that they refer to in their written assessment.
7 GSPL: (Three 50 mins session over 2 weeks). AUTUMN TERM Topic 5: La influencia de los ídolos Cantantes y músicos Estrellas de la televisión y el cine Modelos Grammar objectives and skills linked to theme: Use indirect and indirect pronouns, use of the passive voice and how to avoid it. Use connectives to improve your written work and translations into Spanish, use connectives and other expressions to improve your conversation style, know how to check your own work. Assessment aims: By the end of the unit the students should have compiled a detailed list of topic related vocabulary, written at least one topic related essay and practised talking about an exam type card. Dossier de cine: Estudiar una película Discuss cinema vocabulary, plot, themes, social environment, technique and style. SPRING TERM The term will be spent watching and analysing in depth the film El laberinto del Fauno directed by Guillermo del Toro. In the final examination students will need to answer one essay question in Spanish on the book or film which they have studied requiring a critical response. The end of term and the Easter holiday will be dedicated to revise and prepare for the internal examination, with plenty of paper practice and exam technique exercises. SUMMER TERM Share with DAH.
