1 Since 1848 SS. PETER & PAUL JESUIT 438 St. Antoine Street Detroit, Michigan SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE INSTRUCTIONS Welcome to historic Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit, Detroit s oldest church building and first Cathedral in downtown Detroit. Thank you for selecting us as the site for your wedding. Preparing for your marriage is about more than cake, flowers and dresses. It is about taking time to reflect upon and celebrate the great gift of love you have found in one another. We know that it is an important sacrament for you both. It is our goal to help you to prepare not only for the ceremony but for a long and happy marriage together. To celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage: Only Catholic marriages will be celebrated at Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit. One of the engaged couple must be a baptized, practicing Roman Catholic in the Latin Rite, and currently registered in a parish. A Catholic ceremony requires six months for marriage preparation. Therefore, wedding dates cannot be established less than six months ahead. Notify your pastor that you wish to be married at Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit. Not all pastors will give consent to be married outside your own parish. If your pastor does not provide consent you will not be able to complete the sacrament of marriage at Ss. Peter & Paul Jesuit. If your pastor agrees for you to be married here, he must fill out and return our permission form letter (included in this packet). If both parties are Catholic in the Latin Rite, only one permission letter is needed. Review the instructions and complete the attached package which includes the following: Use of Church Contract for Sacrament of Marriage (pages 3-4) Marriage Application (page 5) Pastor s Permission Letter (page 6) After you have initialed each page, filled in the necessary information and signed where applicable, please return the required information to our office in order to establish a marriage file. Once we receive the completed forms, your pastor s permission letter and your deposit, we will contact you to secure your wedding date. The total fee for a non-parishioner wedding is $1,750. A non-refundable deposit of $550 is necessary to set a date, with $600 due 90 days before the wedding and the remaining $600 balance due two weeks prior to your wedding day. It can be mailed in with the forms or sent electronically on our website. Fifty-percent, or $875, is tax deductible as a donation to Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit. Please note: We will try to accommodate your plans for a specific date. However, dates are given on a first come first served basis and must take Liturgical dates into consideration. Please notify the office if there are any questions. Blessings, Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit Ss. Peter & Paul Jesuit Marriage Information - Revised 8/28/2014 page 1 of 6 /

3 Ss. PETER & PAUL JESUIT USE OF CHURCH CONTRACT FOR SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE Fees The fee is $1,750. The fee includes the use of the church, a coordinator for the day of the rehearsal and the day of your marriage, use of a bridal room for one hour before the ceremony, and our parish musician. Marriage preparation is also included in the fee, if needed. The deposit of $550 is non-refundable if the couple cancels the marriage, for any reason. The remaining balance is paid in two installments; $600 ninety days before the wedding and $600 two weeks prior to the wedding day. To avoid a fee, couples need to be registered, active parishioners of Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit for at least two years prior to the wedding date. If Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit cancels the wedding, any deposit received will be refunded. Preparation You and your pastor must decide how to handle your marriage preparation: either in your own parish or through our program. A six-month period of marriage preparation is required. Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit requirements include completing a pre-marriage inventory through Prepare-Enrich and meeting with a marriage counselor couple. Presider If you would like us to provide you with a priest, please contact the office for availability. If non-parishioners bring their own celebrant for their marriage; our fee is not reduced. Non-Catholic clergy are permitted to assist in marriages in accordance with the laws and practices of the Roman Catholic Church, (as permitted by the priest). Liturgy A liturgy meeting is helpful in planning the readings and prayers that will be used for your ceremony. Call the office to schedule. Music Our musician is included in the fee. Call the office six to eight weeks before the marriage to make arrangements. If you choose to use your own musician(s) or singer(s); our fee is not reduced. An additional packet of information is available on our website for download. Candles Unity candles are permitted. This traditional practice is not part of the Catholic Rite of Marriage, however we do allow them. Photo/Video Photographers/Videographers are not permitted to be on the sanctuary platform during the liturgy. Only available light may be used during the liturgy, no flash photography. Additional lighting may be used for photographs before or after the liturgy. Photographers will have 45 minutes for picture posing and taking. This includes time for equipment setup. If a marriage liturgy doesn t begin on time, picture taking time will be reduced. This is especially important for Saturday marriages celebrated prior to the regularly scheduled Mass. The choir loft is available for use and is recommended. Intrusive behavior by photographers and videographers will not be permitted. Parking Rehearsal If you would like to reserve the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Student Parking Lot (located behind the church, across E. Larned St.) for your wedding and/or rehearsal ceremonies, please complete the event request form found at: Please be sure to include the dates and times for both the rehearsal and wedding ceremonies, if parking is requested. Reserving the lot will also allow restroom access inside the Law School. Your application will automatically forward to University Services, who will work with Public Safety and the Law School to make further arrangements. University Services will reply within 7-10 business days upon receiving the request confirming availability and verifying costs. Rehearsals are usually held Thursday or Friday prior to the scheduled wedding date. Marriage couples must be prepared with readers and gift bearers. Call the office to schedule. Ss.
