13 IND Business Information Centre (BIC) Asylum Trends Special Theme: First Asylum Applications in Europe (2nd half of 214) related to country Area, Population and GDP Source: EUROSTAT, situation by 2nd Introduction Biannually the influx of asylum seekers in Europe is related to three indicators of country size: Area, Population and GDP. This way, it's easier to compare the asylum influx between small, medium, and large countries. Table 1: Number of first asylum applications compared to country area, population and GDP in the 2nd half of 214 Rank Country of asylum Number of Applications % share in EU Country area (sq km) % share in EU Inhabitants (million) % share in EU GDP % share in EU EU 1 Germany 15,24 3% % 8,8 16% 2,624 2% 2 Sweden 46,1 13% % 9,6 2% 314 2% 3 Italy 39,175 11% % 6,8 12% 1,541 12% 4 Hungary 36,31 1% % 9,9 2% 17 1% 5 France 29,275 8% % 65,8 13% 1,83 14% 6 Austria 17,92 5% % 8,5 2% 281 2% 7 United Kingdom 16,97 5% % 64,3 13% 1,742 13% 8 Netherlands 11,38 3% % 16,8 3% 548 4% 9 Denmark 1,77 3% % 5,6 1% 18 1% 1 Belgium 8,635 2% % 11,2 2% 339 3% 11 Bulgaria 7,41 2% % 7,2 1% 87 1% 12 Greece 3,72 1% % 1,9 2% 213 2% 13 Poland 3,445 1% % 38, 8% 673 5% 14 Spain 3,365 1% % 46,5 9% 1,125 9% 15 Finland 2,1 1% % 5,5 1% 156 1% 16 Cyprus 855 % %,9 % 19 % 17 Romania 855 % % 19,9 4% 278 2% 18 Ireland 85 % % 4,6 1% 149 1% 19 Malta 715 % 316 %,4 % 1 % 2 Luxembourg 61 % %,5 % 37 % 21 Czech Republic 57 % % 1,5 2% 216 2% 22 Portugal 275 % % 1,4 2% 23 2% 23 Lithuania 245 % % 2,9 1% 56 % 24 Latvia 22 % % 2, % 35 % 25 Slovenia 19 % % 2,1 % 44 % 26 Croatia 185 % % 4,2 1% 66 1% 27 Slovak Republic 125 % % 5,4 1% 16 1% 28 Estonia 9 % % 1,3 % 25 % EU - Total 347,6 1% % 56,8 1% 13, % Not EU Switzerland 12,6 4% % 8,1 2% 326 2% Norway 5,895 2% % 5,1 1% 25 2% Not EU - Total 18,495 5% % 13,2 3% % Table 1 shows the number of first asylum applications, country area size, population and GDP in the 2nd half 214 in Europe. Table 1 is arranged by the number of asylum applications in decreasing order. Germany registered the highest number of applications, followed by Sweden and Italy. The Netherlands ranked 8th within the EU. It is clear from table 1 that the ranking of countries when compared by the three indicators of country size is not the same as the ranking ordered by the number of asylum applications. There are substantial differences for most European countries between their share of the EU-28 total of asylum applications, country area, inhabitants and GDP. In the next subsection, the different indicators of country size will be related to the number of asylum applications in more detail. 13

Hungary and Austria ranked second and third at some distance (5,4 and 3,1 times more than the EU average).
