5 There are many qualities that one might use to describe themselves and others. Here are a few that you will encounter throughout this section. Listen to Track 19 on the Module 2 CD for the correct pronunciation. There will be a pause after each sentence. Take this time to repeat what you hear. Repeat this activity two more times. English Equivalent Il est gentil. Il est sympa. Il est honnête. Elle est gentille. Elle est sympa. He/She is nice. He/She is kind. He/She is nice. He/She is friendly. Elle est honnête. 7 DAY THREE In this lesson, I will review the verb Être. 1. Listen once more to Track 18 on the Module 2 CD and open Section Two, Day Three of the Workbook and do question 1. The verb Être in French is the verb to be. Notice how it is used below. Je suis sympa. Tu es intéressant. Il est ennuyeux. Elle est intelligente. Nous sommes comiques. Vous êtes gentils. Ils sont beaux. Elles sont belles. I am nice. I am friendly. You are interesting. He is boring. She is intelligent. We are funny. You are nice. You are kind. They are handsome. They are beautiful. 2. Open Section Two, Day Three of the Workbook and do questions 2, 3, and 4. Pg 37

8 DAY FOUR In this lesson, I will work with adjectives. 1. Open Section Two, Day Four of the Workbook and do question 1. Adjectives change in French depending on the noun they are describing. Review the definitions of nouns and adjectives below. A noun is a word that is either a person, a place or a thing. Proper nouns are nouns that name people, cities, rivers, buildings and other things that are given specific names. Proper nouns always start with a capital letter. Examples: Karine or Justin are proper nouns as are Edmonton, the Red Deer River, the Telus Tower, etc. Common nouns describe common items such as a pencil, a pen, a car, etc. Pg 38

9 Continued An adjective is a word that describes a noun. In French, adjectives agree with the nouns. This means that a masculine noun has a masculine adjective, and a feminine noun has a feminine adjective. Observe how the masculine adjective intelligent becomes intelligente with a feminine noun. un garçon intelligent une fille intelligente Note: Some adjectives will not change if they already end in e. An example of this would be comique. un garçon comique une fille comique A clue to tell you if a noun is masculine or feminine is the article placed before the noun. Masculine nouns are preceded by the articles le or un, feminine nouns are preceded by the articles la or une. 2. Open Section Two, Day Four of the Workbook and do questions 2, 3, and 4. Pg 39

10 DAY FIVE In this lesson, I will continue working with singular and plural nouns and adjectives. 1. Open Section Two, Day Five of the Workbook and do question 1. In Day Two, we learned that qualifying adjectives change from masculine to feminine depending on the gender of the noun. Adjectives also change from singular to plural, depending on the number of the noun. If the noun is singular, the adjective is singular. If the noun is plural, the adjective is plural. un garçon intéressant une fille intelligente des garçons intéressants des filles intelligentes Pg 40

11 continued The plural form of most adjectives is achieved by simply adding an s. One exception is the adjective beau/belle meaning handsome/beautiful. une belle fille un beau garçon de belles filles de beaux garçons Note: The masculine adjective beau becomes beaux in its plural form. We add an x instead of an s. Sometimes, des becomes de when it is placed before specific adjectives. 2. Open Section Two, Day Five of the Workbook and do questions 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Pg 41

12 DAY SIX In this lesson, I will describe myself and my personality traits in French. 1. Read the context below then listen to Track 22 on the Module 2 CD. You should recognize this dialogue from the animation Se présenter. Use the following picture to help you understand. Context: Jean-François gives a physical description of himself. Then he continues by stating how he, his friends and his parents would describe his personality. 2. Open Section Two, Day Six of the Workbook and do questions 1, 2, and 3. Pg 42

13 DAY SEVEN In this lesson, I will use the previous lesson s descriptions to write riddles about the characters. 1. Listen again to Track 23 on the Module 2 CD. Open Section Two, Day Seven of the Workbook and do question 1. Here is the riddle given for question 1, on Day Seven of the Workbook: Elle a les yeux bleus. Elle a les cheveux noirs. Karine dit : Elle est comique. Justin dit : Elle est ennuyeuse. Notice that all the sentence start with elle. This indicates that our secret person is female. You would use the pronoun il if your secret person was male. Pg 43

14 The verb Avoir is used to describe someone s physical traits. Il a les cheveux noirs. Elle a les yeux bruns. The verb Être is used to describe someone s personality traits. Il est ennuyeux. Elle est sympa. You may also have noticed that certain physical traits are also described using the verb Être. mince, gros/grosse, petit/petite, grand/grande, beau/belle Il est mince. Elle est petite. 2. Open Section Two, Day Seven of the Workbook and do questions 2, 3, and 4. Pg 44

15 DAY EIGHT In this lesson, I will ask others about their personality traits. 1. Open Section Two, Day Eight of the Workbook and do question Read the context below then listen to Track 24 on the Module 2 CD. Use the following pictures from left to right to help you understand. Context: Jean-François and Karine are completing an assignment for Health class. They have a checklist that they must complete. Jean-François asks his questions and marks Karine s answers on his checklist. Next, Karine asks her questions and marks Jean-François answers on her checklist. They are now ready to write descriptions. Pg 45

16 Notice how Karine and Jean-François simply use intonation to ask their questions. Tu es sympa? 3. Open Section Two, Day Eight of the Workbook and do questions 2, 3, and 4. Pg 46

17 DAY NINE In this lesson, I will write a description using physical and personality traits. 1. Read the context below then listen to Track 25 on the Module 2 CD. Use the following picture and description to help you understand. Context: Émilie is describing a picture using physical and personality traits. C est Madame Morin. Elle est grande et belle. Elle a les cheveux roux et les yeux verts. Elle est sympa et gentille. Elle est intelligente. 2. Open Section Two, Day Nine of the Workbook and do questions 1, 2, and 3. Pg 47

18 DAY TEN In this lesson, I will review concepts from previous lessons in Section Two. 1. Before moving to today s activities, take some time to review this section and be aware of all that you have learned. Day One: Say the following in French. a. I am nice. b. You are funny. c. She is interesting. d. He is intelligent. Day Two: Say the following sentences in French. a. He is intelligent. b. She is intelligent. How does the adjective change? Day Three: Conjugate the verb Être with the following pronouns. a. Je b. Tu c. Il d. Elle Pg 48

19 Day Four: If a noun is feminine, the adjective is feminine. If a noun is masculine, the adjective is masculine. What adjective would you use to complete the following sentences? a. Karine est intelligent/intelligente. b. Il est gentil/gentille. c. Justin est grand/grande. d. Elle est beau/belle. Day Five: How are adjectives made plural in French. Change the following adjectives to their plural form. a. Ils sont intelligent. b. Elles sont comique. c. Karine et Émilie sont gentille. d. Éric et Justin sont beau. Day Six: Listen again to Track 22 on the Module 2 CD. Can you describe Jean-François physical and personality traits? Day Seven: Below is a picture of Karine. She is nice and intelligent. Using her physical and personality traits, can you write a riddle about her. Pg 49
