3 Introduction This whitepaper offers a technical introduction to Riak for retailers. It looks at the advantages of a highly available, fault tolerant, scalable solution for in-store retail, ecommerce, mobile, and multi-channel platforms and how top retailers are leveraging Riak. It then presents an overview of common use cases for Riak in the retail space, such as shopping carts, product catalogs, API platforms, and mobile applications. Finally, it examines how Riak differs from traditional relational database systems, how to start building applications on Riak, and how Riak Enterprise achieves multi-datacenter replication for data locality and disaster recovery. Riak Overview Riak is a distributed database architected for: Availability: Riak replicates and retrieves data intelligently, making it available for read and write operations even in failure conditions; Fault-Tolerance: Riak is fault-tolerant so you can lose access to nodes due to network partition or hardware failure and never lose data; Operational Simplicity: Riak allows you to add machines to the cluster easily, without a large operational burden; Scalability: Riak automatically distributes data around the cluster and yields a near-linear performance increase as capacity is added. Riak is available open source under the Apache 2 license. Riak Enterprise is a commercial extension of Riak that provides multi-datacenter replication, 24/7 support, and enterprise monitoring. Benefits for Retailers Always On Shopping Experience: Based on architectural principles outlined by Amazon, Riak favors data availability, even in the event of hardware failure or network partition. Retailers must always accept additions to a shopping cart and serve product information quickly. Riak is architected to ensure the system can always accept writes and serve reads at low-latency with high responsiveness. Resilient Infrastructure: Hardware malfunction, network partition, and other failure modes are inevitable. Riak provides a failure-resilient infrastructure. Data is replicated automatically within the cluster so nodes can go down but the system still responds to request. Low-Latency Data Storage: Retailers now operate online and mobile experiences with an API or data services platform. In order to provide a fast and available experience to end users, Riak is designed to serve predictable, low-latency requests as part of a service-oriented infrastructure, and is accessible via HTTP API, protocol buffers, or Riak s many client libraries. Peak Load Scale with Low Operational Cost: During major holidays and other periods of peak load, retailers should significantly increase their database capacity. Riak enables easy capacity increases. When new nodes are added, Riak automatically distributes data evenly to naturally prevent hot spots in the database, and yields a near-linear increase in performance and throughput when capacity is added. Global Data Locality and Redundancy: Riak Enterprise allows replication of data to multiple data centers, providing both a global data footprint and the ability to survive datacenter failure. 4 Technical Overview This section provides a brief overview of the architectural principles of Riak. For more in-depth details about Riak, and its inner workings, view the online documentation, Riak Fast Track. Masterless Design Each node in a Riak cluster is the same and contains a complete, independent copy of the Riak package. There is no master. No node has more or different responsibilities. This uniformity provides the basis for Riak s faulttolerance and scalability. Even Distribution of Data Around the Cluster Data is distributed across nodes in the Riak cluster using consistent hashing. Consistent hashing ensures data is evenly distributed around the cluster and enables nodes to be added or removed with automatic, minimal reshuffling of data. This best-in-class approach significantly decreases risky hot spots in the database and lowers the operational burden of scaling. Replication Riak s replication scheme means that even if nodes go down, data can still be read, written, and updated in the face of hardware or network failure. Riak allows a configurable replication number, n, so that the system can be fine-tuned to meet overall requirements. Handling Failure Conditions Riak gracefully handles node failures through hinted handoff. If a node fails, a neighboring node will take over its storage operations. When the failed node returns, the updates received by the neighboring node are handed back to it. This ensures availability for writes and updates and occurs automatically. Key/Value Data Model In Riak, objects are comprised of key/value pairs, which are stored in flat namespaces called buckets. Riak does not dictate what types of data are persisted as all objects are stored on disk as binaries. As a result, any data can be stored, in any desired format. All Content Basho Technologies, Inc. 5 Case Studies Best Buy Best Buy Co., Inc. is North America s top specialty retailer of consumer electronics, personal computers, entertainment software, and appliances. Riak has been an integral part in the transformation push to re-platform Best Buy s e-commerce platform. Riak s architecture has helped Best Buy build and operate the platform that powers its product catalog data. Best Buy uses Riak s full-text search and multi-datacenter replication features. For more information on Best Buy and Riak, check out Joel Crabb, Director of Web Architecture at BestBuy.com, talk about how Riak fits into their pattern of innovation and moving from a traditional relational architecture to Riak in this video from RICON2012, Basho s developer conference. ideeli ideeli is one of the fastest-growing retailers in the U.S., with over 5 million members and over 1,000 brand partners. Every morning, ideeli opens more than a dozen fashion showcases to members, offering thousands of units of merchandise in an array of colors and sizes. The event-based shopping experience generates similar results to the release of hot concert tickets, with members flocking to make purchases and pushing loads on the application in excess of 3,000 requests per second with more than 700 "add to carts" per second. ideeli uses Riak to serve HTML documents and user-specific products. ideeli chose Riak to provide its highly available, event-based shopping experience, serving users information at low latency and providing ease of use and scale to ideeli s operations team. "Riak is one of those things that just works and doesn't need our attention on a day-to-day basis saving both time and money," said David Mitchell, Director of Technical Operations at ideeli. For more information on ideeli s use of Riak check out the complete case study. All Content Basho Technologies, Inc. All Rights Reserved 3

6 Use Case & Advantages Shopping Carts Product Catalogs Shopping cart infrastructure is one of the most critical pieces of a retail platform. Revenue is lost when the shopping cart is unavailable, loses product additions, or responds slowly to users. Riak is built using many of the same architectural principles that power Amazon s shopping cart, and is designed to offer an always on experience for users - even if failure conditions such as hardware failure and network partitions occur. The expanding world of ecommerce means storing and serving products from massive inventories. Retailers need to store anywhere from thousands to tens of thousands of inventory items and associated information - such as photos, descriptions, prices, and category information. Storing and easily accessing these unique product attributes can be vital for providing a personalized customer experience or enabling product differentiation. Riak is well suited for storage of rapidly growing content that needs to be served at lowlatency. Riak s content-agnosticism means that any type of product information can be stored in any format: images, JSON/XML/HTML documents, text, and even videos. Riak s high availability enables ease in adding and serving product information; the scalable design means that new machines can be easily added as inventory increase, without downtime or manually resharding data. This keeps the operational cost small and predictable, no matter what the growth. Channel Connections Mobile sites and apps are an important part of a comprehensive retail strategy, with more and more users viewing, buying and sharing products via their mobile devices. Riak is ideal for low-latency, always-available small object storage to power mobile experiences across platforms. For more information on Riak as back-end storage for mobile applications check out case studies from Bump (one of the most-downloaded ios applications of all time) and Voxer (a massively popular ios and Android application that lets users share voice, text, and video in real-time). API Platforms Increasingly, retailers are operating their online and mobile infrastructure as data platforms: exposing product information and other data through APIs to fuel business development, affiliate growth, and rapid application development to support multi-channel retail requirements. As the foundational storage layer for a retail platform, Riak provides lowlatency object storage with a flexible, schemaless design for rapid application development. Riak offers both a straightforward, RESTful HTTP and a highly performant protobufs API. Developers don t have to deal with underlying complexity of what data lives where, and operators can add machines easily to yield near-linear performance and throughput improvements when data sets grow. 7 From Relational to Riak Most retailers traditionally use a relational database, such as MySQL or Oracle DB, as the foundation of their infrastructure. This section analyzes the benefits Riak has over traditional relational systems, an overview of how to develop retail apps on Riak, and options for searching and querying data. Top Reasons Retailers Should Use Riak High Availability Relational Databases favor consistency over availability, making them ill suited for applications that require high availability. The CAP theorem, fathered by Dr. Eric Brewer, states that in the event of a network partition, a distributed system can either provide availability or consistency. Traditional relational systems favor consistency, using a master/slave architecture. Under this configuration, the master node is responsible for accepting all write operations and coordinating with slave nodes to apply the updates in a consistent manner. Read requests can either be proxied through the master or sent directly to the responsible slave. However, in the event that a master node fails, the database will favor consistency and reject write operations until the failure is resolved. This can lead to a window of write unavailability, not ideal for retail apps that need to be always-on. In contrast, Riak is a masterless system designed to favor availability even in the event of node failures and/or network partitions. Any node can serve any incoming request, regardless of data locality. Each object in Riak is replicated a configurable number of times in the cluster (the default is three). If a node experiences an outage, other nodes will continue to serve write and read requests. Further, if a node becomes unavailable to the rest of the cluster, a neighboring node will take over write and update responsibilities for the missing node. The neighboring node will pass new or updated objects back to the original node once it rejoins the cluster, through a process called hinted handoff. Minimizing the Cost of Scale Scaling a relational database, as data and usage grows, can be prohibitively expensive for operators. Relational architectures utilize a technique called sharding to achieve scale. Sharding breaks data into logical parts that can be distributed across multiple physical machines. A common example would be putting user data for differing geographical regions (e.g., US and EU) on different machines, or using an alphabetical or numerical order to split data. This approach can be problematic for several reasons. First, writing and maintaining sharding logic increases the overhead of operating and developing an application on the database. Significant growth of data or traffic typically means significant (and often manual) resharding projects. Determining how to intelligently split the dataset without negatively impacting performance, operations, and development presents All Content Basho Technologies, Inc. All Rights Reserved 5

8 a substantial challenge - especially when dealing with big data, rapid scale, or peak loads. Finally, sharding can often lead to hot spots in the database physical machines responsible for storing and serving a disproportionately high amount of both data and requests which can lead to unpredictable latency and degraded performance. In Riak, data is distributed evenly across nodes using consistent hashing. Consistent hashing ensures data is evenly distributed around the cluster and new nodes can be added with automatic, minimal reshuffling of data. This significantly decreases risky hot spots in the database and lowers the operational burden of scaling. When machines are added, data is rebalanced automatically with no downtime - a much simpler operational scenario for growth. For more comprehensive details on the benefits, tradeoffs, and considerations of moving from a relational system to Riak, check out our whitepaper, Relational to Riak. Modeling Applications in Riak The data models of traditional Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) offer many features that developers find important. However, with trends like big data, agile development, and new types of applications (social & mobile), there has been an increasing desire to store unstructured data (data that does not require the rigid data model of relation systems). In Riak, objects are comprised of key/value pairs, which are stored in flat namespaces called buckets. Here are some common approaches to structuring retail data in Riak s key/value design: Data Type Key Value Item in Product Inventory Product Name or ID JSON, XML or Text, HTML document Product Advertising Campaign Identifier Ad Content User Profile Login, , UUID User Attributes (often stored as a JSON document) Image or Video Content Content Name, ID or Integer.JPG,.PNG,.GIF or other image format;.mov,.mpg,.mp4 or other video file format Session Information User/Session ID Session Data All Content Basho Technologies, Inc. 9 Querying While many users find that Riak s key/value model is more flexible, faster to develop against, and better suited to their applications, there are tradeoffs regarding query options and data types available. Riak does not expose sets, counters, or transactions. It also does not support join operations as there is no concept of columns and rows. Riak is queried via HTTP requests, protocol buffers API, or through various client libraries. However, Riak offers robust additional functionality on top of the fundamental key/value model. Riak Search Riak Search is a distributed, full-text search engine. It provides support for various MIME types & analyzers, and robust querying including exact matches, wildcards, range queries, proximity searches, and more. Possible Use Cases: Searching product information or product descriptions. Secondary Indexing Secondary Indexing (2i) gives developers the ability, at write time, to tag an object stored in Riak with one or more queryable values. Indexes can be either integers or strings and can be queried by either exact matches or ranges of an index. Possible Use Cases: Tagging products with categories, special promotion identifiers, date ranges, price or other metadata. MapReduce Developers can leverage MapReduce for analytic and aggregation tasks. It offers support for both JavaScript and Erlang. Possible Use Cases: Filtering product information by tag, counting items, and extracting links to related products. For more information on these query options, as well as how to implement them, their architecture and limitations check out the Riak documentation on searching and accessing data in Riak. 10 Multi-Datacenter Replication Multi-datacenter replication is quickly becoming critical for today s retailers. Replication across multiple clusters provides geographic data locality the ability to serve global traffic at low-latencies from nearby datacenters. It can also be an integral part of a disaster recovery or backup strategy. Retailers can use multi-datacenter replication to maintain secondary data stores for performing intensive computation without disrupting production load. Finally, multi-datacenter replication can be used to cloud burst from a datacenter to another platform - such as Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure. This is increasingly common for retailers who need to rapidly scale up to accommodate peak loads during the holiday seasons and then return to normal capacity for the rest of the year. Multi-datacenter replication is included with Basho s commercial extension to Riak, Riak Enterprise, which also includes 24/7 support. In Riak s multi-datacenter replication, one cluster acts as a primary cluster. The primary cluster handles replication requests from one or more secondary clusters (generally in datacenters in other regions or countries). If the primary cluster goes down, a secondary cluster can take over as the primary cluster. In this sense, Riak s multi-datacenter capabilities are masterless. Multi-datacenter replication has two primary modes of operation: full-sync and real-time. In full-sync mode, a complete synchronization occurs between the primary and secondary cluster(s). In real-time mode, new updates trigger incremental synchronization. Full-sync is performed upon the initial connection of a secondary cluster and then at set intervals (default is every 360 minutes). Both full-sync and real-time sync can be configured unidirectionally or bi-directionally. Complete documentation for multi-datacenter replication in Riak Enterprise is available in the online documentation.
