2 What is Etsy? Etsy is an online community marketplace of handmade goods, vintage items and supplies made available by individual sellers. Sellers make their own shops with their own goods available in individual shops. They then become part of the greater whole of the Etsy marketplace, searchable through Etsy s search feature. Etsy considers itself a venue connecting a creative community. Etsy describes itself as a venue, not a retailer; Etsy's role is to connect the buyer and the seller. This means when you place an order on Etsy, you are entering into a direct transaction and personal relationship with an individual seller (facilitated by Etsy). From: Who can sell on Etsy? Anyone can sell on Etsy. What makes Etsy unique? Individual sellers make and offer unique items usually made on a small scale. Items that are sold on Esy are often customizable or made to order. 4 Buying on Etsy Browse what s available on Etsy: subscriptions: Daily Finds sign up for a daily featuring items and shops selected by Etsy staff Sign up for other newsletters to receieve shopping suggestions, news, and selling tips More ways to shop: Categories: browse categories and subcategories of products, based on most recent listing of an item Gift Cards: purchase cards with designated amount Colors: shop by color of the item Treasuries: curated collections of items selected by other buyers and sellers on Etsy Shop Local: browse your city Shop Search, People Search: search using names of shops or people How to Buy and Sell on Etsy April 3, 2013 PAGE 4

5 Buying on Etsy Browse and Select: Browse results Left side-bar: Narrow your results by: o Categories and sub-categories o Location o Ship-to location o Price Keep track of selections made to narrow your search by the thread along the top of the page, as well as the number of results found (here it is 28) How to Buy and Sell on Etsy April 3, 2013 PAGE 5

6 Click on item to see more details Buying on Etsy View item and seller: View this item, its photos, description and price. Add it to Favorites or Add to Cart to purchase. The right hand side has a column of links which include: Shop o Click on the name of the shop to see the whole shop and what it offers o Add shop to favorites o See who favorites this shop Shop Owner o Click on the name of the owner to view his/her profile How to Buy and Sell on Etsy April 3, 2013 PAGE 6

7 o Favorites: view the shop owner s favorites o Contact: send a message to this seller. Can be used to ask questions, request custom work, etc. Item o Add item to favorites o Share through social sites like Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook Buying on Etsy Check out: Make a purchase: Add the item to your cart. o Include a note to the seller if you like A (free) Etsy account is needed to make a purchase o Sign up using your address Pay using credit card or PayPal account o Enter your payment information How to Buy and Sell on Etsy April 3, 2013 PAGE 7

8 Buying on Etsy Your Account: As a buyer, sign in and click on YOUR ACCOUNT. Here you will find a list of your recent purchases. Account information is located in the left side-bar: Purchases: all purchases you have made Feedback: what you have said about sellers, and what they have said about you as a buyer Public Profile: information that others see about you, you can edit this as you wish Settings: account info, settings, shipping info, etc. Apps: applications you use How to Buy and Sell on Etsy April 3, 2013 PAGE 8

9 Selling on Etsy On the front page of Etsy: To begin selling your handmade goods, vintage items or supplies on Etsy, click Sell in the upper left corner, which will bring you to Etsy.com/Sell where you will learn more about selling. How to Buy and Sell on Etsy April 3, 2013 PAGE 9

10 Click on Help in the upper right corner to find answers to your many questions about Etsy in general. 11 Selling on Etsy Set up shop: Follow the steps in the banner along the top of the page Shop Name: Begin by choosing a shop name. List Items: Create listings for items to sell. Get Paid: Choose your shop payment methods. o Options: Direct Checkout (to bank account), PayPal, Money Order, Personal Check Billing: Enter info to pay your Etsy bills. 12 Selling on Etsy Locate Shop (1) Locate YOUR Shop (2) (1) (2) After you have set up a shop, sign in to locate Shop and YOUR Shop on the front page. o Click Shop to see your shop as it appears to everyone. How to Buy and Sell on Etsy April 3, 2013 PAGE 12

13 o Click YOUR Shop to see the behind-the-scenes details of your shop. Under Your Shop you can edit item listings, check sold orders, pay your bill, check your shop stats, change settings, and perform many other shoprelated administrative tasks. How to Buy and Sell on Etsy April 3, 2013 PAGE 13

14 Selling Notes: Sold items: o Upon sale, you will receive a confirmation . Ensure that you have been paid through your payment method. o The item listing will move to the Sold section of your shop. To make the same item available again, you must re-list it, for 4 more months, costing 20 more cents. o Etsy fees: 20 cents per 4 month listing and 3.5% of total upon sale. There are also PayPal sale fees or Etsy Direct Checkout fees (3% of sale). Billing: o On the first of every month, Etsy will make your bill available under Your Shop and you. o o Listing fees (20 cents per item) and transaction fees (3.5% of each sale) will be tabulated here. Processing fees are taken at the time of purchase either in PayPal or through Etsy s Direct Checkout. Set-up: o Create a brand and identity using cohesive photos, descriptsions, logos and names. Make your shop recognizable and recallable. o o Use Etsy as: State your shop policies clearly. Create a profile for yourself so buyers can know more about you, however much you care to share. A starting point o Etsy can be a way to promote your work. Use it as a portfolio to show other venues. o Begin selling your goods on Etsy to see how they sell, what people like most, and what they request. A social community o Forums, Chat Rooms, and Virtual Labs, are all venues that make Etsy a social place. o Join teams, create treasuries, and follow other members. o Add items and shops to your favorites and follow members to see what they favorite. o Use resources like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and blogs to promote your work and your shop. 15 General Etsy Notes: Etsy-related vocab: o Reserved or Custom listing: a hold is placed on an item or a custom order is made for a specific buyer. It is priced accordingly and is ready for checkout by that buyer only. o Tags: keywords or descriptors used in describing and searching items for sale on Etsy o Treasury: an ever-changing, member-curated shopping gallery of items -Etsy o OOAK: Acronym for One Of A Kind o Following: connect with (or follow) other members to see their recent activity in your feed. o Activity feed: an ever-updating feed of stories from the people you are following as well as the activity associated with your shop such as favoriting items and shops, following, and new items from your favorite shops. FAQs o Does Etsy have fees? Etsy fees: 20 cents per 4 month listing and 3.5% of total upon sale. PayPal and Etsy Direct Checkout also take (3% of sale) as a transaction fee. o Are there other sites that offer similar services? Artfire, BigCartel and DeviantArt are examples of online marketplaces for art, but all are different in what they offer and how they offer it. o What makes Etsy a unique shopping experience? Transactions are between individual sellers and buyer. Sellers are generally small scale producers creating their own unique work.
