This Annual Report demonstrates the impact of our partnership with you. Your NICU Family Support program provides information and comfort to families during the NICU hospitalization of their newborn, during the transition home, and in the event of a newborn death. The program also contributes to NICU staff professional development and promotes the philosophy of family-centered care throughout your NICU. NICU Family Support is currently active in in more than 130 hospitals across the country in every state, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. In 2014, March of Dimes undertook critical quality improvement initiatives for NICU Family Support programs across the country. This included the launch of the first ever standardized education for parents in the NICU and groundbreaking materials to support Shorter Stay NICU families. More about these initiatives can be found within this report. In addition to our ongoing quality improvement work, the program is strengthened with the support of your leadership, Unit staff, and graduate families. Your partnership through this program is a significant component of all we do, including providing services to more than 90,000 families served across the United States each year. We look forward to continuing our successful partnership to support families and staff in your neonatal intensive care unit. 3 National Highlights In 2014, March of Dimes strengthened and expanded NICU Family Support to enhance the quality of the programming you receive through our partnership. Several new initiatives came to fruition, such as the release of the Family-Centered Care Survey results,* launch of our Core Curriculum for parent education, and new Shorter Stay materials. All these activities are based on our expertise in research and evaluation in maternal and child health. Standardizing Parent Education In July the program officially launched standardized content for parent education in the NICU, which complements other ongoing parent education offerings. The standardized Core Curriculum classes provide families with consistent information that covers useful topics such as introduction to and discharge from the NICU, nutrition, skin to skin care, and preventing subsequent preterm births. Ongoing evaluation of this initiative is helping March of Dimes determine the first ever best practices in parent education in the NICU, another groundbreaking effort that has the potential to significantly improve how families receive critical information in this setting. Providing Support for Shorter Stay Families In 2014, March of Dimes released the first ever print materials designed to support the unique needs of shorter stay NICU families (those in the NICU less than 14 days). These families represent 54% of NICU admissions nationwide, and we are proud that our new booklet In the NICU for a Shorter Stay is now an award-winning and standard part of the print materials offered with the program, allowing our hospital partners to meet the needs of families no matter their length of stay. Improving Educational Resources for NICU Staff In 2014, more than 1,200 NICU staff were trained in person at family-centered care workshops led by March of Dimes NICU Initiatives training faculty. Topics included communication, bereavement, skin to skin care, physical development, neonatal abstinence syndrome, caring for the caregiver, genetics, compassion fatigue, cultural considerations, and the perspective of shorter stay families in the NICU. Nursing staff in our partner hospitals were also given access to free contact hours with the Taking the Evidence for Kangaroo Care into the Clinical Setting webinar. This special benefit builds on the work we have done to promote skin to skin care with Close to Me, a proven program whose results were published in the December 2

4 2014 issue of Advances in Neonatology. Access to the webinar and contact hours will continue into 2015 in order to support best practices in skin to skin care in the NICU and beyond. *To request additional copies of the survey results please contact your NICU Family Support Specialist. Local impact at Capital Health Distributing supportive print materials In total, in 2014 we provided supportive educational materials to 90% of NICU admissions at Capital Health. This includes 165 kits of booklets for longer stay families, and 176 kits for shorter stay families. Families and NICU staff have shared that the resources provided through NICU Family Support programming have provided comfort and support as well as increased their knowledge of taking care of their infant in the NICU and at home. Providing quality parent education In 2014, your NICU Family Support program educated 154 family members during 57 education sessions. Since the launch of the Core Curriculum in July, 24 sessions were held on: Taking Care of Your Baby in the NICU Bringing Baby Home and CPT Infant Nutrition Caring of Yourself Late Preterm Infant Your Baby s Development Families who attend our CPR and Bringing Baby Home class rate it as excellent and indicate it increased their knowledge of baby care. Parents that attend our Late Preterm class are surprised to learn that their infant is not considered full-term at 36 weeks. One parent comment, Wow! I didn t know my 35 week old baby is considered early. I thought she was fully developed. Now I understand why she has a little trouble with her feeds. Each month we also offer parent activities to help the families develop a supportive relationship with each other during their NICU stay. The activities celebrate holidays, acknowledge milestones and provide socialization. In 2014, the NICU Family Support Program provided the following: Distributed Milestone Calendars with stickers to keep track of baby s progress. Gave personalized gifts to families for Valentine s Day, Mother s Day and Father s Day. Celebration of Pie Day, a pre-thanksgiving celebration for NICU families, hosted by NICU graduate families and staff. 3

5 Provide a monthly calendar highlighting a NICU graduate story. Calendars list parent education classes, craft classes and social events for families. Graduate families choose at least 2 fun holidays to celebrate each month where they hand out small items or snacks to families. (For example: Bath Tub Day- each baby received a rubber duck with a wash cloth.) Promoting Professional Development The Capital Health specialist, Christy Keppel, attended the Gravens Conference and worked on the pilot program The Late Preterm Infant. As a result of the pilot program, Christy provided the Late Preterm reading materials in the parent care kits and developed parent class for families with late preterm infants. The class was developed with other NICU Family Support Specialist while attending Gravens Conference. In 2014, the March of Dimes was proud to provide 20 NICU staff with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Education. The class discussed the increase use and abuse of opioids, signs and symptoms of drug abuse during pregnancy, how to deal with the emotional mom, and how to work for better outcomes for families dealing with drug abuse. 7 In addition to the activities mentioned above, NICU Family Support at Capital Health brought the following events to families and staff: Participation in the Shorter Stay Parent Care Kit and education pilot program for March of Dimes. NICU Reunion at Trenton Thunder with over 350 attendees including graduates and NICU Staff. Reunion was funded by March of Dimes New Jersey Chapter. NICU Kangaroo-a-thon, parents were encouraged to kangaroo and learned the benefits of kangarooing their baby. Families were given stuffed kangaroos and staff wore T-shirts Carry on and Kangaroo. Education and materials were provided by March of Dimes. Capital Health had graduate family teams and staff teams attend March for Babies at Mercer County Park. World Prematurity Day was celebrated in the NICUs. Area eighth graders knitted purple hats for all NICU babies to wear on Prematurity Awareness Day. A graduate family provided snacks for families and staff for the day. 6
