However, registered schools/colleges for AQA are permitted to copy material from this booklet for their own internal use, with the following important exception: AQA cannot give permission to schools/colleges to photocopy any material that is acknowledged to a third party even for internal use within the centre.

The sources provided in this booklet are intended to be used by schools/colleges to answer the tasks set. If a school/college wishes to replace one source from Task 1 and one source from Task 2 with one of their own selection, perhaps to contextualise the study by the inclusion of a local dimension, it is able to do so. However, to preserve the balance of source types across selections of sources, an AQA source should be replaced by one of a similar type: a written primary source/oral evidence should be replaced by a different written primary source a visual source by a different visual source the visual source need not replicate the source provided: a photograph could be replaced, for example, by a cartoon or film for Question 2, the secondary source must be replaced by a different secondary source the content of the source must replicate the content of the AQA source to maintain the same coverage of the subject content of the task sources from the 2015 Tasks cannot be used in Any changes considered by a school/college must be done in consultation with and with the approval of the school/college s Controlled Assessment Adviser. Please note that there are 10 sources. Sources A, B, C and D should be used in answering Question 1 and Sources E, F, G, H, J and K in answering Question 2. There is no Source I. 3 of 12

Source B A still image from the government film The Battle of the Somme showing an attack. This was a staged scene believed to have been shot before the battle behind the lines. The film was put on general release in August Source C An extract from Winston Churchill s speech to the House of Commons on 4 th June 1940, after the evacuation from Dunkirk. It was later repeated in a BBC radio broadcast on the same day. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France. We shall fight on the seas and oceans. We shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight in the fields and in the streets. We shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender. 5 5 of 12

Source D The opinion of a member of the public on government propaganda, interviewed by Mass Observation in the Second World War. Mass Observation was an official organisation set up in 1937 to record everyday life in Britain. In just one short walk I counted 48 official posters on hoardings, shelters, buildings. They included ones to tell you to eat National Wholemeal Bread, not to waste food, to keep your children in the country, how to behave in an air raid shelter, to look out in the blackout, to look for poison gas, to carry your gas mask always, to join the ATS, to register for Civil Defence duties, to help build a plane, to recruit for the Air Training Corps, to save for Victory. 5 Source E A secondary interpretation of the idea of total war in Britain in the two world wars. From The Making of Modern Britain by Andrew Marr, a book published in 2009 to accompany the BBC TV series of the same name. In the First World War millions of British people found their lives changed. This was the first war to touch almost everyone in Britain since the wars of the17th century. If you opened a window in a London suburb when the wind was in the right direction, the air was stirred by the rumble of barrages from guns in France. Britain discovered big government government control of their lives, high taxes, working women, food shortages and rationing. In the Second World War, virtually the entire economy was mobilised it became the People s War. Heroism was widespread, embracing pensioners and fire fighters, air raid wardens and nursing mothers. The citizens of Britain ended up weighed down with rules, taxes and restrictions of 12

Source H A description of life in the East End of London during the Blitz. It is from a report written on 31st August 1940 by the British Home Intelligence Division of the Ministry of Information. Such reports were kept secret. Lack of sleep is beginning to tell on people in all areas, showing itself in paleness and tiredness of children and irritability of grown-ups. This is particularly true of poorer districts where conditions are crowded and public shelters are packed and noisy at night. In shelters in Bethnal Green hundreds of people of mixed ages and sexes congregate with bedding in unsanitary conditions and remain all night. 5 Source J A comment on children evacuated from London. From the novel Put Out More Flags by Evelyn Waugh published in The novel was set during the Phoney War. Oh dear, Mr Mudge said Mrs Sothill, which of them is giving trouble? Why it s all of em. There s the boy was the best of em at first though you can t understand what he do say. To cheer him up I took him out to see me kill the goose. Very interested he was and I gave him the head to play with and he seemed quite pleased. Then no sooner was I off to the root field, then blessed if he didn t get hold of a knife and when I came back supper time there was six of my ducks dead and the old cat. Then the little un, she s a dirty girl, mum. It s not only wetting the bed; she s wetted everywhere, chairs, floor and not only wetting. Never seems to have been taught in a house where she comes from of 12
