Because BioSurf achieves its different looks through a state-ofthe-art digital printing process, Baltix can offer the exciting option of custom table designs at an unbeatable price. With BioSurf, if we can print it, you can get it on your surface. In this booklet, you will find some fun and fresh idea starters for achieving one of a kind tables for any project. BioSurf TM Features Laminate has always been a popular material choice in furniture due to its high levels of durability and stain resistance, its endless color and pattern opportunities, and its amazingly low price points. However, these good qualities have always been underscored by the fact that laminate is also a petroleum based product that is injected with formaldehyde. The creators of BioSurf TM recognized this unfortunate truth behind an otherwise great material, and thought there could be a better alternative. By using a blend of corn and soybeans to produce a durable laminate film and applying it over a green MDF substrate made from 100% recycled wood fiber, they created just that. 3 Anatomy of BioSurf TM all natural wear layer Made from 100% natural corn and soy, the wear layer is 5 times thicker than that of standard high pressure laminate (HPL). BioSurf s TM durability and stain resistance is also proven to be better than standard HPL. HD digitally printed graphic Graphics are printed on the back of the BioSurf TM wear layer. 4 Creation Process Image production: Baltix uses digital image creation to give BioSurf its broad color and style palette. We can work with clients to modify our existing offering, or create something completely new and custom. See Custom BioSurf Ordering Guide on page 14. Printing: Once the image is created and orientation is established, it is sent to a large format printer, where it is printed on the back side of the clear BioSurf film. Table forming: The film is then given a solid color back coat and formed over a green MDF substrate. A combination of waterbased adhesive, heat, and vacuum is used to ensure a tight bond between the wear layer and the substrate. The excess material is then trimmed away. 03

7 Ideas for Customizing 1. Color tweaking of Organics & Veneers : While we have worked hard to create a palette that we hoped would accommodate the needs of everyone, we quickly realized there is no such thing. Our solution? Baltix will work with clients in tweaking the color of our existing images to try and satisfy specific requests. Color manipulation may require additional fees and samples. Keep in mind that the color of BioSurf can appear differently under different lighting situations, so always remember to view samples in the space where the final product will live. current natural walnut tweak: more magenta tweak: more green 2. Choosing Custom Solid Colors: When it came time to choose our eight offerings for solid colors, it didn t take long for us to realize that we were going to have to leave some colors out. We feel that our choices make for a nice offering of neutrals, but understand that some people will be looking for bolder and brighter hues. Send us your Pantone information or a paint chip and we will do our best to match it as closely as possible. Additional fees and minimums will apply. We encourage you to have fun with adding logos, images, and patterns to our standard collections. In the pages following, you will find some idea starters that will hopefully help to get your creative gears turning. As usual with custom graphics, additional fees will apply. 12 BioSurf TM Comparison When compared to traditional laminates, BioSurf provides many benefits: NO Emissions High pressure laminates are produced using copious amounts of melamine formaldehyde and phenol formaldehyde resin to saturate layers of paper. These layers are then compressed to form a laminate. During processing, large amounts of hazardous formaldehyde is released into the air. In addition, a percentage is trapped within the laminate that slowly emits over time in an indoor environment. Although some laminates are certified green, they still emit formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is known to cause cancer and according to many journals, there is no safe level of formaldehyde emissions. BioSurf uses a combination of water-based adhesive, heat, and vacuum to achieve the bonding of materials. BioSurf contains no VOC s or formaldehyde. IMPROVED Wear Resistance Tabor resistance tests show that BioSurf has improved wear over traditional laminates. BioSurf patterns and colors are not worn through as seen in laminates after uniform wear. In addition, BioSurf can be refurbished if worn or scratched by simple sanding or polishing to the desired gloss. BioSurf has a wear layer approximately 5 times thicker than the melamine formaldehyde wear surface on laminates, providing additional wear resistance that protects the patterns and colors from wear Results of Tabor Resistance (weight lost after 1000 cycles): Standard laminate=18 mg, BioSurf=15 mg IMPROVED Scratch Resistance Scratch resistance measurement by ASTM Standard uses a Hoffman stylus to apply a force, measuring on the stylus at the point where the surface shows scratching. In independent testing, BioSurf could withstand 5 times the force needed to scratch Standard laminates under ASTM protocol for this test. Results of Hoffman Scratch test (minimum force resulting in scratch): Standard laminate=100 g, BioSurf=500 g IMPROVED Impact Resistance Upon impact, standard laminate will crack relatively easily, leaving sharp edges and a potential opening for water or moisture to permeate the substrate. BioSurf has a much higher degree of flexibility and impact resistance. Results of impact test (minimum impact resulting in crack): Standard laminate=33 inch-pounds (4.5 lb weight), BioSurf= 129 inch-pounds (4.5 lb weight) IMPROVED Stain Resistance BioSurf BioLaminates have a higher degree of stain resistance in accordance with ASTM testing by independent laboratories. 13 Technical Properties FDA Status The Biopolymers used in BioSurf BioLaminates are FDA approved and information is published at: The grade of biopolymers used in BioSurf may be used for food handling and its permitted components of such materials pursuant to section 201(s) of the Federal, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and Parts 182, 184, and 186 of the Food Additive Regulation. Food Contact Approval Biopolymers found in BioSurf are suitable for food contact and have compliance with a number of food contact packaging regulations around the globe. Organic Recycling - Industrial Composting Composting is a method of waste disposal that allows organic materials to be recycled into a product that can be used as a valuable soil amendment. Biopolymers used in BioSurf are a compostable material in municipal and industrial composting facilities where available. These materials break down like other carbon based organic matter under industrial composting conditions. Energy The materials of BioSurf use significantly less energy to produce than conventional petrochemical polymers. These materials typically use percent LESS ENERGY to produce and convert than petrochemical plastics. BioSurf Limitations BioSurf should not be used in high direct heat applications. BioSurf is designed for and limited to interior applications. 15 Custom BioSurf TM Ordering Guide Logos & Graphics Baltix will not print any logos or graphics until we receive a signed consent form from the client giving us permission to do so. We will accept vector files with file extension.eps,.ai, or.svg. All text must be outlined. Color information for each color used should be submitted in Pantone format (PMS) or as a physical color chip. Please be clear in indication where each color belongs. We will consider accepting raster image files only if the files are at 300 PPI or greater at full print size. We much prefer to work with files in one of the vector formats listed above. We will be glad to assist you in determining whether or not we can work with your files. Solid Color Matching: Customer must provide a physical color chip or provide Pantone format (PMS) color information. Due to the nature of our process and the inherent qualities of the materials, we do not guarantee exact color matches. Material Replication: Baltix will only consider reproducing natural, unpatented, non-copyrighted materials such as actual wood, stone, etc. We do not copy other manufacturers materials. We are happy to customize a look from our existing library of materials to try to satisfy custom requests. If a desired look is requested which is not achievable from our current library, we will consider it on a case by case basis. In these instances it will always be the customers duty to provide us with the raw materials to our specifications that are intended for reproduction. Due to the nature of our process and the inherent qualities of the materials, we do not guarantee an exact match can be made. A proof sample may be provided to insure customer satisfaction. We will be honest and fair in indicating whether or not we believe we can satisfy your custom needs. Minimums and additional design and setup fees may apply. Other information For each order, please indicate the size, placement, and orientation of all logos and graphics used. * If there are various surfaces, we will need the above information for each one. Lead time for custom designs is typically 6 weeks from the date of the Purchase Order, considering that we have all necessary graphics in the correct format by this date. Setup fees include file handling, graphic sizing and placement, color matching, and digital proof production. Glossary Vector- A vector image is a mathematical series of points joined by lines. Each object in a vector file is a self contained entity, therefore it can be moved and scaled without affecting clarity or resolution. Outlining text- The process of converting text and font information into outlined vector shapes, therefore insuring that the printed text will look the same when transferred to a computer that does not have the font used to create it. Raster image- An image created by individually joined square pixels. When the image is enlarged, curved edges can appear jagged. 300 pixels per inch is a minimum pixel ratio that insures the image is printed at a clarity that is acceptable by the naked eye. PMS- The Pantone Color Matching System is a standardized color reproduction system. By standardizing colors, manufacturers in different locations can all refer to the Pantone system to make sure colors match without direct contact with one another
