11 Section - 2 Spotted Joe-Pye Weed Perennials Spotted Joe-Pye Weed (Eutrochium maculatum) Sun Requirements: Full sun to part shade Soil Requirements: Moist to wet soils Natural Habitat: Wet meadows, stream banks and marshes Mature Height: 3-6 feet Wildlife Value: Attracts butterflies and pollinating bees Garden Use: Joe-Pye Weed is a hardy flowering perennial that needs lots of space in the garden. It looks best when planted in groups that show off its spectacular flower and height. Best used behind other shorter plants. This is an excellent plant for a raingarden. Boneset Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) Sun Requirements: Full sun to part shade Soil Requirements: Moist and wet soils Natural Habitat: Damp woodlands, bogs and meadows Mature Height: 3-6 feet Wildlife Value: Attracts birds and butterflies Garden Use: Boneset is a good choice to mix in with other perennial plants to create color and texture contrast in the garden. Tolerates sandy or clay soils, but needs constant moisture. Used effectively in a raingarden. Blooms in late summer. Queen of the Prairie Queen of the Prairie (Filipendula rubra) Sun Requirements: Full sun to part shade Soil Requirements: Moist soil preferred, drought tolerant Natural Habitat: Wet meadows, low-land woodlands Mature Height: 3-6 feet Wildlife Value: Attracts butterflies Garden Use: A tall and commanding plant, stunning when planted in masses, and effective in the rear border on central location behind shorter plants. 13 WHAT ARE NATIVE PLANTS? A native plant is a species of plant that has historically grown in a particular area without human introduction. Plants that have evolved over thousands of years in a particular region, adapting to the geography, hydrology and climate of that region. Native plants are primary producers and provide the foundation for healthy ecosystems.

17 BENEFITS OF NATIVE PLANTS Provide critical habitat and food for wildlife and pollinator species. Native plants play an important role in the sustainability and biodiversity for a healthy watershed. Native plants: reduce water use, reduce pesticide use, reduce maintenance. Cultural identity and pride.

18 FOOD. Native plants are especially important because of the vast numbers of insects they support. INSECTS: 60% Insects and other arthropods provide about 60% of the avian diet 96% 96% of land birds feed insects to their young, no matter what those birds eat as adults. Deep root zones add stability to the shoreline and soak up excessive nutrients carried in stormwater runoff. Critical habitat: 90 percent of all lake and river life is born, raised, and fed along the shorelines of water systems.
