2 Part 1: Grammar (40 points). Respond to the following tasks and questions. Answer in English. Task 1. Terminology (8 points) The ancient idea that fevers can be beneficial enjoyed a renaissance around a century ago, after an observation by a physician in Vienna. He noticed that some of his psychiatric patients improved after fever attacks. After several attempts at inducing fever in patients using microbes, he injected blood from a person with malaria into a patient with syphilis, which is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. (From New Scientist, July 2010) In the sentences above, identify the following grammatical features. To get a point, you must give the requested number of correct answers. If one of two is wrong, no point will be given. 3 Task 3. Active and passive sentences (2 points) Rewrite the two sentences below in the passive. Be careful to keep the same tense and aspect. 1. The shop gave us a refund. 2. My cousins are building a new house. Task 4. Prepositions (2 points) Complete the following sentences by filling in the appropriate word in the gaps. 1. She picked a book (på) random and found that it was a grammar book. 3. Gotland is situated (utanför) the east coast of Sweden. 4. He has always been good (på) teaching our dog new tricks. 4. When we arrived (till) London it was dark.. Task 5. Pronouns (4 points) Fill in the correct pronoun(s) in the gaps in the sentences below. 1..(Den som) wants to read that book will find it in the library. 2. The tree,. If they are not, correct them without changing the number of verb forms in the verb phrase and explain why they had to be corrected. If they are correct, write a C` below them. 1. Error analysis (8 points) Find four grammatical errors in the boldfaced text below, correct them and explain your correction. Study the following example to see how to do this task: Ungrammatical text: *Students increasing turn to the Internet to. Underline and number the error: *1) Students increasing turn to the Internet to. Give a correction of the error: Error no 1: The text here should read Students increasingly turn to the Internet to. Explain: because an adverb, not an adjective, is needed to modify the verb turn to. The cumulative amounts of oil and gas that has been used globally cannot be known exactly, but estimates published in one study 2007 suggest that up to the year 2000 we had burned 110 gigatonnes of oil. However, this study and it s results have been criticized for not being detailed enough. Apparently, the authors chosed not to take some sources into consideration. Error no 1.
