what is the ticket to work program? A social security law that gives people choices and supports to go to work. Ticket to Work Law - The law removes barriers that in the past made people choose between getting healthcare coverage and other benefits or working. - The law makes it easier to go to work because many people will not lose their healthcare and other benefits. Page 3
the goal of ticket to work The goal of the Ticket to Work Program is to help individuals with disabilities who receive certain social security benefits find employment and keep their job. These social security programs include: A. SSI - Supplemental Security Income B. SSDI - Social Security Disability Insurance C. SSDAC - Social Security Disabled Adult Children Page 4
how can the ticket to work program help me? It helps you to get off social security benefits in a safe and supported way It helps you get a job that pays well so you can have a better life It helps you keep medical benefits such as Medicare and Medi-Cal It helps you be more involved in your community You can receive social security benefits for up to 12 months while you work at your new job. If the Ticket to Work Program doesn t work out within those 12 months, you don t lose benefits. Page 5
who is eligible to receive a ticket? To be eligible for a ticket you must be: 1) 18 years old and have not reached your 65th birthday. 2) Currently receiving at least one of the following social security benefits like: u u u A. SSI - Supplemental Security Income B. SSDI - Social Security Disability Insurance C. SSDAC - Social Security Disability Insurance for Disabled Adult Children Page 6
what services can i get with my ticket? Help with school or classes so I can work Help developing a resume Help finding a job Help with other employment services like getting a job coach Page 7
what other things can i get with my ticket? Rehabilitation Services related to going back to work such as: Adaptive equipment like a reading or speaking program for the computer Transportation to get to work Job training Page 8
what are the steps to getting a ticket if i want to participate? You can call the Social Security Administration. They can send you a ticket and program information. Go to to get more information about the Ticket to Work Program and agencies that accept tickets. Page 9
once i get my ticket, how does the program work? The Social Security Administration has contracted with National, State and local service providers, known as Employment Networks. What is an Employment Network? An Employment Network is an organization that helps people who receive social security benefits find employment and supports needed to have successful employment. Page 10
what do i do after i get my ticket? If you choose to participate in the Ticket to Work Program, take it to an Employment Network or organization that provides Ticket to Work Services. There is a list of Employment Networks available online at: Remember, you choose which network you want to work with, so it s important to meet with and interview several Employment Networks before making a decision. After choosing an Employment Network, you and your network or service provider will develop and write a work plan. Page 11
if you decide ticket to work is for you, here are some things that may happen: You and your Employment Network or service provider will outline the services you need to find and keep a job. Your Employment Network will work with you on your employment goals. Page 12
some other things to remember: If you get a ticket in the mail it is your choice to participate or not in the Ticket to Work program. You will only have one chance to use your ticket each time you receive social security benefits. If you use your ticket and it doesn t work out or you encounter barriers, you can try the Ticket to Work program again, as long as you are back on social security benefits. If you are not happy with your Employment Network you have the right to change Networks. Page 13
who should i talk to before deciding to use ticket to work? Who to talk to: Talk to your circle of support. (Your circle of support may include family members, friends or your case manager.) If you are a person served by the Regional Center SystemYou can call an Individual Program Plan (IPP) meeting to discuss your goals about going back to work. Page 14
what happens if you run into difficulties using your ticket? You can call: Social Security Office Office of Clients Rights Advocacy Disability Rights California or Go to Page 15
