6 FOCUS ON AVIATION AND TOURISM AFRICA S TOURISM POTENTIAL The UNWTO Vision 2020 for Africa forecasts a growth in Africa s share of global tourism arrivals from 3.6% in 1995 to 5% in According to a World Bank Report, the tourism industry is currently growing at a respectable rate of 7.2% in Africa and one out of every 20 jobs in Africa is in the tourist and travel industry. Given its cross-sectoral nature, tourism can only grow sustainably if it is integrated into the country s overall economic, social and physical planning policies

9 BENEFITS OF TOURISM IN AFRICA Less prohibitive barriers to entry : Barriers to entry in tourism are less prohibitive than for technologydriven industries such as manufacturing and mining. Improvement of infrastructure: Supporting and investing in tourism benefits many, not just those earning a living wage from working in the sector. Market Opportunities : Tourism promotes the expansion in air transportation creates market opportunities for local entrepreneurs by creating regional and global economic centers

11 CHALLENGES OF TOURISM IN AFRICA Restrictions of the air distribution channels Reluctance by African Governments to enter into an open skies policy; air liberalization policies, and an increasing dominance of regional gateway hubs Set-up of the African Air Transport Systems Different characteristics in terms of route structure;, numbers of carriers operating, type and passenger capacity of aircraft in use, and the number and runway length of airports served. Lack of a Critical Tourist Mass

12 UNLOCKING AFRICA S INVESTMENT POTENTIAL Develop partnerships between African businesses and emerging markets in the "field of air transportation and tourism. Upgrading of airports to international standards to avoid unnecessary delays at the airport. Airports are also important symbols of countries being open to business and operating at a global level. Increase the number of airlines including charter services, operating to Africa in general and particularly in the emerging markets.

13 UNLOCKING AFRICA S INVESTMENT POTENTIAL Address the very high cost of air transportation which clearly affects the tourism business possibilities in Africa. Capitalize on Cruise ships which bring to Africa more and more the possibilities for fly-cruise tourism, and this is dependent on good air access. Tripartite approach to tourism (airlines, civil aviation authorities, and tourism boards) can be encouraged to develop synergies in order to improve air services.

14 UNLOCKING AFRICA S INVESTMENT POTENTIAL Enhance Connectivity: A surge in the number of airlines flying into Africa would grow tourist numbers and attract investment. Growing Alliances with Counterparts: In recent years, growing alliances with counterparts in other regions of the world have played an important role in the development of the African aviation industry.. Enforcement of existing international standards for air transport safety and baggage screening at airports is a top priority.

15 UNLOCKING AFRICA S INVESTMENT POTENTIAL Encourage and Assist African countries efforts to address security, hospitality management, infrastructure and environmental constraints to tourism development, e.g. through training programmes; Support tourism operators to improve knowledge of the continent and its tourism attractions; Improve Air Safety: Through effective communication Overall improvement of air transport : quality, seats, departures, airport density
