In different cultural, political and social systems, various forms of the Family exist. The rights, capabilities and responsibilities of Family must be respected.

3 About Us History The World Family Organization - WFO - is an International Organization which has as main objective to represent families of the world at all levels, to defend their interests and to act with them and for them vis a vis governments and the international community. With respect to the United Nations and the consultative process, the Organization shall act as the link between both the aspirations and achievements of the families and the work done for them at the level of the United Nations. WFO Constitution The idea to create an International Organization to deal with Family matters was born for the first time in June 1, 1946 in an International Congress for Families and Population in Brussels. The first World Family Congress took place in Paris on June At this Congress, the United Nations, 27 Governments and 200 delegates from all over the world deliberated on the creation of an International Organization to work Family Issues. The International Union of Family Organizations - IUOF was founded. The main functions initially were: Reunifying Families separated by the II World War; Documentation; Liaison among all civil movements in favour of a better life for all families; Representation within Governments, public opinion and International Organizations, starting with United Nations. In 1997, the 50th Anniversary of the IUFO was celebrated in Foz do Iguaçú - Brazil. The General Assembly decided to delegate to the new elected Executive Board the preparation of amendments to the Constitution and the reformulation of the Executive Structures of the Organization according to the document prepared for the Celebration of the 50th Anniversary: "IUOF 50 Years - A New Depart". Vision To introduce Family Issues in definitive on the International, National and Local Agendas and strengthen it on the Framework of Economic, Social, Cultural, Political and Sustainable Development. Mission 02 In 1998, the IUFO's General Assembly, held in Vienna, Austria - the same place where the first Constitution was approved in approved amendments to the Constitution and renamed the institution to World Family Organization - The International Union of Family Organizations. To promote means, opportunity, equal rights and chances for women and men to assume their role and functions within the Family and Society, in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity, and promote policies and actions to bring about better life condition to all Families, respecting theirs diversity and cultures. 03

Executive Board Composed of elected members who administers the Organization between sessions of the General Assembly. Regional Committee Composed of organization members at Regional Level. Regional Offices Centre of coordination for the activities within a region. Office for Project Services Created to coordinate and direct WFO s Projects. World Family University Conduct research and studies on Family matters. Technical Bodies Technical Commissions Considered desirable to serve any purpose within the competence of the Organization. The Family should be helped in its supporting, educating and nurturing roles and responsibilities, such as moral, affective and material support. Its contribution to the economic and social development process is essential. 5 World Family Summit Work Functions To Act as the promoting and coordinating Organization on international efforts among Governmental, Non- Governmental Organizations as well as other private sector, in increasing awareness of family issues and policies formulation; To Contribute to poverty eradication by implementing policies, programs and projects servicing the basic needs of families such as education, health, housing, recreation, work, social protection, drugs and crime prevention, domestic violence, migrant integration and combat of all kind of discrimination. To Develop, in cooperation with specialized agencies where necessary, policies for improvement, inter alia, of housing, health, sanitation, nutrition, education, recreation, work conditions, welfare systems, social protection and benefits, family relationships and environmental issues affecting families; To Encourage social integration, human rights, tolerance, equal opportunity, solidarity, social participation, respect and non-discrimination of diversity through families. To Conduct research and studies in the field of families and their members; To Promote and Strengthen the bonds of solidarity between families worldwide, encouraging the development of intra familial support systems approaching their common responsibilities for a better world of justice and peace; To Assist Members, upon request, in strengthening family related policies and services; To Promote and/or sponsor conferences, seminars, international, regional, national and local meetings and training to discuss major family concerns; In order to attend the call of the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, for a very comprehensive celebration of the Tenth Anniversary of the International Year of the Family, in 2004, the World Family Organization, along with its affiliated Governments, NGO s and Universities in over 180 countries, took the initiative to call for a World Family Summit - WFS. The main purpose of the various editions of the World Family Summit is to promote Family s contribution to the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals following a multi-stakeholder approach. It constitutes the biggest partnership towards making the present and the future world with more peace, security, justice, tolerance, solidarity, prosperity and integrated by mobilizing and promoting the basic economical, political, socio-cultural and sustainable unit of the society - the Family. The World Family Summit represents a legacy for the future generation, through the engagement of all sectors of Society in a Learning Dialogue Action process. Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women According to the World Family Organization Strategic Framework , there are five main streamlines vital for family development: Entrepreneurship Housing Health Education Peace Reduce Child Mortality 5. Improve Maternal Health 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases 7. Ensure Environmental Sustainability 8. Develop a Global Partnership for Development 06 07

6 The Members The members of WFO are formed by National Governments, Municipalities, NGOs, Universities, Centers of Research and Studies, Parliamentary Bodies, Business Companies, Judiciary Power, Media and Families themselves that develop policies and strategies in relation to Family matters. WFO has members in over 180 countries in all continents. Membership Who Can Become a Member International Acknowledgement Besides being affiliated to the United Nations by the General Non-Governmental Organizations Governmental bodies, agencies, institutions and local authorities Universities, Academic and Research Centers Consultative Status at the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), WFO is a very active partner of the Non-Governmental Section (UN NGO Section), the Division of Public Economics and Public Administration (UN DPEPA) and the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA). WFO is also an official partner of the United Nations Institute for Judiciary Power Membership to the Organization are open to all Nations through: Parliamentary Bodies Training and Research (UNITAR), the Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Media Groups Business Community FAMILIES! The Family is central for the transmission of human values and the development of individuals into responsible and self-reliant personalities. 7 Families and their communities are at the very heart of sustainable development. While taking the principle of subsidiarity into account mechanisms encouraging partnerships between the sectors - public authorities, private sector and third sector should be established.
