1 First Look TM Curriculum for Preschoolers We want preschoolers to take a first look at who God is and understand... God made me. God loves me. Jesus wants to be my friend forever. August 17/18, 2013 Basic Truth: God loves me. Key Question: Why should you do what God says? Bottom Line: God knows what s best for me. Memory Verse: God s way is perfect. Psalm 18:30, NIrV Bible Story Focus: I should do what God says even when it s hard. Naaman 2 Kings 5:1-14 Here s an overview of what you ll be teaching in 3s 5s this week. 2 Make It Fun (Introductory Activities, 15 minutes) 1. 7 Times What You Need: Nothing needed. What You Do: Instruct the children to do several movement activities seven times each. Count to seven as you do each activity. (Suggested Activities: jumping, patting your head, stomping foot, touching toes, blinking eyes.) What You Say: Before the activity: Can you count to seven? (Pause.) Okay let s try it! (Count to seven.) Great job! Now let s count to seven while we are JUMPING! (Continue using different movements as long as there s interest.) At the end of the activity: That was so much fun! Today we are going to hear a true story from the Bible about something AH-mazing that happened seven times. Are you ready to hear our Bible story? I am! Make It True (Large Group, 20 minutes) After children have participated in Make It Fun, gather them in Kidville Park for a large group time that includes interactive worship, introductory sketch and Bible story. 3 Make It Stick (Application Activities, 25 minutes) These activities are designed to help preschoolers understand and remember today s Bible story and Bottom Line. 1. A Little Faster What You Need: Bible What You Do: Read the Memory Verse from the Bible. Then lead the children in saying the verse while patting a slow rhythm on your legs. Encourage the children to pat their legs with you. Once they have the hang of it, increase the tempo of the rhythm every few times you say the verse. What You Say: Our Bible verse says, God s way is perfect, Psalm 18:30. Say that with me. (Repeat the verse.) Perfect means always right. So this verse is saying that God s way is always right! That s why we should do what God says, because God knows what s best! Why should you do what God says? (Pause.) Because God knows what s best for me! I have a fun way for us to say our Bible verse today. Just do what I do! During the activity: (Begin a rhythm that the children can follow along with.) God s way is perfect, Psalm 18:30. (Say the verse along with the rhythm you pat on your legs. Increase the tempo every few times you say the verse.) At the end of the activity: You guys did great keeping up with my rhythm. Today in our Bible story we heard how Naaman had sores and owies on his skin and was told to wash in the river seven times. At first Naaman didn t know how this would help him, but he did it and all the sores disappeared! Naaman found out that God s way is perfect. We may not see or understand why we should do something, but God knows and God s way is ALWAYS perfect. 2. Naaman in the Water What You Need: Small foam cups, craft sticks shaped like people, blue construction paper, markers, and tape. What You Do: Give each child a cup and a sheet of blue paper to wrap around the cup and tape. Next give each child a craft stick and guide them to decorate their craft stick with markers to make it look like Naaman. 4 side of the stick through the slit in the bottom of the cup. Move the stick up and down to resemble Naaman dipping into the water. What You Say: Today we re going to make something for you to take home so you can tell your family the story of Naaman. I m going to give each of you a cup that I want you to cover with blue paper like the water in our story from today. Now that you ve covered your cups, we need to (hand out the craft sticks decorate our craft sticks to look like Naaman. (Demonstrate.) Fantastic work! It s finally time to put it all together! Are you ready? (Show the children how to position the stick into the slit of the cup so that Naaman can move up and down.) Watch Naaman! (Demonstrate with a completed craft, making the Naaman figure go up and down seven times.) At the end of the activity: God told Naaman to do something that was hard. Naaman did what God said, and all his owies got better. Do you think Naaman was glad he did what God said? I do, too! We should do what God tells us to do because God knows what s best for us. Why should you do what God says? God knows what s best for me! 3. Going Under What You Need: The Naaman craft from Naaman in the Water, and the Parent Note. What You Do: Use the craft from Naaman in the Water to retell the Bible story. At the end of your time together, make sure a Parent Note goes home with each child to explain the craft. What You Say: We learned about a man named Naaman in our Bible story today, didn t we? He was in the army and he was very important. The problem was that Naaman had sores all over him and he needed to get rid of them. A little servant girl that was working in Naaman s house told him that God could help him and that all he needed to do was go talk to a man named Elisha. Naaman went to see Elisha and was told to wash himself in the Jordan River how many times? (Pause.) Seven! But Naaman didn t think that would work. How could taking a bath in a dirty river get rid of his sores? At first, Naaman didn t want to do that. He wanted them to go away without having to go all the way to the Jordan River. Naaman had a choice to make, didn t he? (Pause.) He could go to the Jordan and wash like God said or he could stay home and not get rid of the sores. Do you remember what Naaman chose to do? (Pause.) 5 said. He went to the Jordan River and dipped himself in it seven times just like Elisha said! Let s do that with our Naaman craft. Are you ready? (Dip Naaman into the cup seven times, counting out loud as you do it.) Seven times Naaman washed himself, and when he came out, the sores were all gone! God knew what was best for Naaman just like He knows what s best for us. That s why God s way is perfect! Why should you do what God says? (Pause.) Because God s way is perfect and God knows what s best for me! 4. Jump In, Jump Out What You Need: Large blue sheet or blanket. What You Do: Spread the blanket or sheet out on the floor and have the children stand around it. When you say, Jump in! have the children jump onto the sheet. When you say, Jump out! have them jump back onto the floor. Repeat several times, going faster each time. At the end of the activity, have the children jump in and out seven times to reinforce the concept from the story. What You Say: Look at this big river! Who wants to jump into it with me? (Pause.) Everybody, jump in! Let s jump seven times! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven! Now everybody jump out of the water! Everybody back in! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven! (Repeat as desired, changing it up each time.) That was a lot of fun! In our Bible story, God instructed Naaman to wash in the Jordan River seven times to get rid of his sores and owies. Naaman didn t want to at first but then he did and all of his sores and owies went away! Naaman found out that God knows best and we should do what God wants us to do. 6 Small Group Time Make It Real is designed to help preschoolers understand how the Bottom Line applies to them. They ll discuss real-life experiences and share prayer requests. Divide kids into small groups of about five to eight children with each leader. Ideally, assign the same small group leader to the same group of preschoolers for the entire year. What you Need: Paperclip Memory Verse Card in your Bible at Psalm 18:30. SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): Sometimes God tells us to do things that are hard things like telling your mommy and daddy the truth about something you did that was wrong or maybe sharing your MOST favorite toy with a new friend. Well, God told Naaman to do something hard in our story today, didn t He? (Pause.) Naaman didn t want to go dip in the water but FINALLY he did it. What happened after Naaman dipped in the water seven times? (Pause.) Yes! God made him all better! God knew what was best for Naaman all along! God knows what s best for you, too. It may not always be easy, but it will always be best. That s why we should do what God says, even when it s hard. Because God knows what s best for me. Why should you do what God says? CHILDREN and SGL: God knows what s best for me! SGL: Let s read our Bible verse and then I want to see if any of you can say it by yourself. (Open Bible.) Our verse says, God s way is perfect, Psalm 18:30. That means God is always right. (Two thumbs up.) Say it with me with the motions. CHILDREN and SGL: God s (point one finger/arm straight up in the air) way (point the other finger/arm straight up in the air) is (draw this word out and make great big circles with your arms) perfect (land in a cheerleader pose with both arms up in the air), Psalm 18:30 (open hands up like a book). SGL: Now, do any of you want to try and say it all by yourself? I have a sticker/hand stamp for anyone who tries. Give each child the opportunity to say the Memory Verse for a stamp/sticker. Yay! You did great! Now I want us to make a list in our journal of some of the things God tells us to do. Once we make our list, we can pray and ask God to help us do them. Let s pray. Prayer: Dear God, we know Your way is perfect and that means You are always right. We want to do what You say because You know what s best for us. Please help us to do things like (read list).
