LandEnergy Girvan Low carbon wood pellet production 28 September 2012
Biography Hugh Montgomery Joined Land Energy as Business Development Manager in During three years in the oil and gas sector, it had become clear that securing reliable forms of renewable energy would dominate the future energy effort. The resulting change of direction led to a Master Degree in Land Economy from Aberdeen University and the for the last 12 years have been actively involved in the agricultural and forestry sectors. Land based activity had been a driving interest, maximising value from sustainable UK resources, including low grade timber for biomass. Responsibility for fibre buying through to pellet sales ensures a fully integrated approach to wood pellet production supply chain. Developing products and markets from co-products is a particular interest, targeting zero waste by creating real uses for waste material. Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
LAND ENERGY ACTIVITIES VALUE CHAIN What we do Integrated from wood-to-heat Land Energy is an integrated biomass energy business Land Feedstocks Wood pellets Energy supply Production and supply of virgin wood pellets Renewable energy generation Renewable heat supply on an ESCO basis Supply of hot water / steam

Wood pellets Environmental benefits Wood pellets are carbon neutral: Carbon sequestration cycle Combustion of wood pellets emits lower levels of CO 2 : Comparing lifecycle CO 2 emissions Source: Carbon Trust and Biomass Energy Centre
Wood pellets Your clean, compact heat source Low Carbon: Land Energy can demonstrate net savings of 90% of CO 2 over oil or LPG, over the entire lifecycle of making wood pellets Proven: Use of wood pellets for commercial and domestic use is well established in Europe Cost-effective: Wood pellets are cheaper than heating oil and LPG per unit of energy generated Wider heat modulation: More suited for variation in heat demand Auto-kindle: Wood pellet boiler systems can also work on auto-kindle Low storage and transportation costs: High energy density Low maintenance costs: Lower moisture and production of ash
ENplus ENplus ensures pellet quality is managed throughout the entire supply chain including production, storage and transport all the way to the end consumer. Size 6mm diameter <40mm length Bulk Density > 600kg/m3 Fines 1.0 % Moisture Content 10 % Ash Content 0.7 % Calorific Value (net) 16.5 MJ/kg Mechanical Durability 97.5% Ash Melting Point 1200 c

Biomass CHP brash as fuel
Pellet Production Process Stage One All timber is sourced locally and conforms to the UK Forest Standard, FSC or PEFC ensuring sustainability. In order to produce pellets of the highest quality bark is removed from the roundwood before the whole log is chipped.
Stage Two Chipped roundwood can be blended with debarked sawmill woodchips and sawdust. The chips are milled to produce a coarse sawdust before passing to the drier.
Stage Three The drier reduces the moisture content of the timber from a natural level of 50-65% water. Timber naturally has variable moisture content, this process ensures that all fibre is now at a consistent level before pelletising.
Stage Four The fibre is ready for pelletising, the process involves pressure and high temperature to re-activate the lignin s in the fibre which will bind the pellet together.
Stage Five The pellets are cooled and sent to storage or for packing; available in bulk, tote and small bags. 100% wood in and 100% wood out.
Pellet Sales Sold via local and national distributors. Bulk (tipper or blower) Tote bags (1.35 tonnes) Small bags (10kg bags)
