Chang e Program China s s Lunar Exploration Activities China National Space Administration 1
Lady Chang e flying to the Moon An Ancient Chinese Legend The legend of Chang e flying to the moon reflects the Chinese people s desire to explore the unknown world. 2
Chang e e Program China s s Lunar Exploration Program Chang e Program is China s lunar exploration program organized by CNSA. It will realize Chinese people s dream of thousands of years to fly to the moon with the desire of Lady Chang e flying to the moon. 3
Milestones in China s s Lunar Exploration Activities In 1991,Chinese space experts proposed lunar exploration program and undertook some advanced research. In 1998,CNSA started to define the program. In 2001,the White Paper on China s Space Activities defined the deep space exploration which emphasized on lunar exploration. On Jan.23,2004, lunar orbiting project was approved which was the first step for China s lunar exploration. 4
The Aims Of China s s Lunar Exploration Program To promote the innovation and development of basic science To lay technological foundation for the future deep space exploration To promote the international cooperation in space and improve space technology To make contributions to the exploration of unknown word for human beings 5
The General Concept For China Lunar Exploration China s lunar exploration program includes three phases: orbiting the moon, soft landing on the moon surface and roving, sampling and returning to the earth. China s Exploration Program Lunar Orbiting Soft Landing and Roving Sampling and Returning 6
First Stage: Lunar Orbiting Exploration Scientific Objects: To obtain threedimensional images of lunar surface To analyze the content and distribution of useful elements on lunar surface To investigate lunar soil To explore the environment between the earth and the moon 7
Lunar Orbiting Project Including Five Systems Lunar Orbiting Exploration Project Launch vehicle system Lunar Exploration Satellite TT&C System Ground Application System Launch System 8
Lunar Exploration Satellite (Chang e-1) DFH-3 platform, 3-axis stabilized attitude control, pointing to the moon Orbital Altitude:200+25km Inclination:90±5 degree Life Span 1year 9
Payloads and Their Performances Seven Payloads Onboard 1.CCD Camera 2.Laser Altimeter 3. Optical Imaging Spectrometer 4. γ/ X Ray Radiometer 5.Microwave Detector 6.Solar High Energy Particle Detector 7.Low Energy Lonic Detector To obtain 3-dimensional images of lunar surface To detect elements and substance To measure the thickness of the lunar soil To investigate the environment between the moon and the earth 10
1.CCD Camera 2.Laser Altimeter To obtain 3-dimensional imagers of lunar surface CCD Camera Laser Altimeter 11
3. Optical Imaging Spectrometer 4. γ/ X-Ray Radiometer To detect elements and substance on the moon surface Optical Imaging Spectrometer γ/ X -Ray Radiometer 12
5. Microwave Detector To measure the thickness of the lunar soil Microwave Detector 13
6.Solar High Energy Particle Detector 7.Low Energy Ionic Detector To investigate the environment between the moon and the earth Solar High Energy Particle Detector Low Energy Ionic Detector 14
Launch Vehicle The LM-3A launch vehicle has successfully flight for many times. Its launch capacity is 2600kg in GTO. 15
Launch Site Xichang Satellite Launch Center 16
TT&C System The tracking, telemetry and remote control mission for Chang e Project can be fulfilled through rebuilding and forming the network based on China s existing TT&C infrastructure, S- band TT&C network and VLBI astronomical measurement network. 17
Ground Application System Chang e-1 Satellite The Application System involves the management of scientific exploration operation, data obtaining and processing as well as scientific research and distribution. Operation Management Center Data Obtaining Center Data Processing and Research Center 18
Flight Trajectory for Lunar Orbiting Project The satellite was put into elliptical orbit by the carrier. After separating from the launcher, the satellite will finally enter circumlunar orbit and carry out the missions by using its propulsion system via phasing orbit, trans-lunar trajectory and lunar capture trajectory. 19

Development Status All the work in the Project is going on well as scheduled. The prototype of the satellite system is being developed. The launch vehicle is under construction as planned. TT&C system, launch site system and application system are being developed, rebuilt and constructed as scheduled. The whole system will be able to move to the launch site in
The Second Stage:Soft Landing and Roving Scientific Objectives 1.To investigate and study the lunar feature and lunar geology of the landing area 2.To investigate inner lunar structure 3.To monitor sun-earth-moon space environment and to conduct the moon-based astronomy observation 23
Goals for The Second Stage To make breakthroughs in soft landing, automatic roving and other related technology, including: earth-moon flight, soft landing, lunar rover s automatic surveying and detecting, remote control, tele-analysis, high data rate TT&C and communications and so on; To develop and launch soft lander and lunar rover and other related scientific detectors. To establish basic lunar exploration system, including: establishing deep space TT&C network, improving ground system so as to form basic coordinated lunar exploration engineering system. 24
The System Organization of The Second Stage The System Organization of Lunar Exploration in The Second Stage New Generation Launch Vehicle Lunar Detector (Lander+Rover) TT&C System (Deep Space TT&C Network to be established) Ground Application System Launch Site (Adapting to new generation launch vehicle) 25
The Third Stage: Sampling and Returning To make breakthroughs in automatic sampling and returning flight technology, including lifting off from the moon, the design of returning r trajectory, guidance and navigation and control technology, reentry and retrieving technology, the design and control technology of the sampling device, high accurate analysis technology of the lunar sample and d so on To develop a small capsule for sampling and returning in order to t collect sample and return to the earth To complete lunar exploration engineering system and provide the base for the future deep space exploration activities 26
Scientific Objects To detect and investigate the landing area To sample and return, to systematically study the lunar sample in petrology, mineralogy isotope lunar geology and lunar chemistry; to further the research on the origin and evolution of the earth and the moon based on the analysis data of the substance composition on the lunar surface 27
Ending As a space-faring country, China will be active in humanity s exploration in unknown space. China is willing to conduct cooperation equally and friendly with the countries all over the world who are welcome to participate in China s lunar exploration program, contributing to humanity s long-rang development and promising future. 28
Thank you! 29
