Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 10K Adaptable LAN Solution for High-Performance Networking
The Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 10K Modular Ethernet LAN Chassis the first of a new generation of modular, network adaptable LAN switching platforms. It is designed to deliver a high quality user experience through scalable, quality bandwidth that optimizes the performance of legacy, real-time, and multimedia applications in a secure networking environment. As the foundation of a simplified network architecture, it meets high availability demands, reduces layers, meets eco-sustainability goals, and eases deployment and administration of application converged networks. The OmniSwitch 10K provides high-density, non-blocking, lossless 5.12 terabits per second of switching performance that reduces network layers and provides the capacity and scalability for a variety of requirements, including enterprise networks and data centers. Hardware and software redundancy features, such as denial of service protection and Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation (MC-LAG), are built into the platform to provide transparent resiliency capabilities. These features allow a network to re-converge on a failure without impacting application performance, thereby ensuring network availability. In-service software upgrade capabilities further maximize uptime, while the platform s embedded policy engine improves application performance with automatic provisioning of quality of service (QoS) and security parameters. And Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS) and FCOE readiness ensure the OmniSwitch 10K will be a long-term component of any next generation network. With front-to-back cooling and a compact design, the OmniSwitch 10K form factor is optimized for a data center. In addition, its front accessible and easily upgradeable components make it a suitable replacement for legacy LAN switches and installations constrained by limited space in an equipment rack. 2 Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 10K
Customer Requirements Deliver Quality Bandwidth (LAN & Data Center) LAN Improved application experience and performance Increased scalability and standards based interoperability Increased bandwidth tuned for real-time applications 10GigE connectivity for 1GigE edge switches, 40G for uplinks and core Full utilization of layer two network links. Eliminate spanning-tree topology instability Transparent resiliency that ensures no application impact upon network failure Minimal rack space for many connections Reduce energy bills Lower power consumption and dissipation of heat Ensure Security Data network Infrastructure that is highly resilient to DOS interruptions Dynamic and comprehensive network security policy capabilities that secures user access and data Secure management communication with granular access controls DATA CENTER Scalability from 1G to 10G to 40G/100G uplinks 10GigE connectivity to high utilization servers running many virtualized applications Future support for fiber channel over Ethernet Minimize Network Complexity & Cost Converged network for voice, data, video and storage Simplified network infrastructure with reduced layers Simplified maintenance with automated provisioning Simplified management of virtual machine mobility Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 10K 3
FEATURES AND BENEFITS Non-blocking system architecture with a lossless fabric, deep packet buffering, and a comprehensive policy engine Provides maximum network performance that delivers quality bandwidth for improved application and user experience. Reduces network layers since network aggregation is not needed. This helps in reducing both investment and operational costs. Multi-use architecture MPLS and data center ready architecture expands homogenous deployment capabi lities reducing vendor sprawl, lowers OPEX costs. Compact optimized form factor Chassis size and component accessibility is compatible with existing platforms to provide a painless replacement upgrade. Front-to-back cooling and dense 10GigE ports (256 ports per chassis) meet the stringent needs of data center applications. High reliability The increased level of system redundancy and resiliency of is market-class leading, providing maximum uptime in the network core. Redundant and host swappable management Redundant and hot swappable switch fabric Redundant and hot swappable power supplies Redundant and hot swappable fans Redundant control plane network Hot swappable network modules In-service software upgrade Smart continuous switching Graceful restart for high level protocols Ethernet Ring Protection for highly resilient backbones Multi Chassis Link Aggregation for highly resilient server and edge switch connectivity 4 Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 10K
MEETING CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NETWORK CORE Reduce Network Layers for Performance and Savings Figure 1 illustrates the typical three-layer network that is required for network growth (network port expansion) which is expensive and complex to purchase, install, configure and maintain. The two-layer network in Figure 2 highlights how the OmniSwitch 10K reduces network layers with system performance that delivers 32 ports of non-blocking 10GigE performance per slot and up to 256 ports per chassis. Fewer network layers also reduces network latency which is important to the quality of real-time communications. The Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation feature in the OmniSwitch 10K further improves network performance and resiliency in the reduced-layer network. Figure 1. Traditional Three-layer Network Core Distribution 32 Port 10GigE Module for Performance and Migration from 1GigE to 10GigE The 10GigE line card provides 32 ports of non-blocking wire rate performance per module. These SFP+ capable ports support a wide array of 10GigE pluggable optical transceivers. There is also a 10GigE direct connect copper cable that provides an economical way to provide chassis-tochassis connectivity without the need for optical transceivers. Network connectivity to 1GigE devices is made possible through the support of 1GigE SFP transceivers. This provides speed adaptability while retaining the 10GigE capability and scalability to grow with your needs. Access Deep packet buffering (1.25 Gb/s per port) to store bursty data traffic that would otherwise be discarded, and extensive traffic management capabilities deliver improved application performance and user experience for both mixed media (voice, video, data) environments and networks unifying their storage network onto Ethernet. 6 Technologies for an Application Converged Architecture MULTI-CHASSIS LINK AGGREGATION Alcatel-Lucent is a proven market leader and pioneer in virtual chassis technologies.multi-chassis Link Aggregation, a subset of virtual chassis, is embedded in the OmniSwitch 10K to enable lower cost deployments and high availability. MC-LAG is a feature in the OmniSwitch 10K that enables increased bandwidth and resiliency between any switch and/or server and two OmniSwitch 10Ks. It also eliminates the nuisance of spanning tree protocols. ETHERNET RING PROTECTION Ethernet Ring Protection (ERP), a layer 2 network feature, uses a ring topology for superior performance, resiliency, and recovery capabilities for layer 2 Ethernet topologies. It also eliminates the need for running spanning tree protocols. Figure 3. Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation and Spanning Tree Protocol Figure 4. 7 Ready for the future The OmniSwitch 10K platform is a 5.12 Tb/s platform that is scalable to over 10 Tb/s insuring its readiness for 40G and 100G switching needs. Future software releases will deliver features to support MPLS, VPLS, virtual machine mobility, and FCOE capability. Simplified Deployment and Manageability Based on the field-proven Alcatel-Lucent operating system used on all our enterprise class LAN switches, the OmniSwitch 10K incorporates this technology from across the Alcatel-Lucent portfolio to provide consistent and intuitive switch administration and reduced training curves. In future software releases, the Alcatel-Lucent virtual chassis management capability will be extended to the OmniSwitch 10K. It will be optimized for the OmniSwitch 10K modular chassis by focusing the features on the management and control plane to eliminate drawbacks, limitations, and switch resource constraints that may occur when data plane integration is included within the virtual chassis capability on a core switch. Additionally, a future software release will incorporate Virtual Switch Management (VSM), allowing embedded switch intelligence to automate the installation and configuration of multiple access layer switches when connected to the OmniSwitch 10K. By managing access switches as if they were extensions to the OmniSwitch 10K, VSM will also simplify network administration by reducing the number of devices that require individual login and configuration.
