3 INTRODUCTION To facilitate individual competitiveness in the job market and capacity in meeting challenges in the increasingly globalized economy, one should enrich his or her knowledge and skills in accounting and finance. CUSCS launches two Professional Programmes in, namely Advanced Diploma Programme in and Advanced Professional Diploma Programme in, for those who wish to enter into the accounting profession or to enhance their career prospect by pursuing professional accounting qualifications, in particular the ACCA Examination. Through a 2-tier structure which results in multiple qualifications, participants can build up sound foundation of knowledge in various areas including financial reporting, taxation, auditing and financial management. The Professional Programmes not only can develop one s practical skills in handling and presenting accounting information to various stakeholders, but also enhance participant s ability in evaluating the business performance and thereby making sound business decisions. The Professional Programmes are also geared to prepare participants for the professional accounting examination. The programmes are recognized by ACCA. An exemption of six papers is granted by ACCA to those graduates of Advanced Diploma Programme in. 2

4 Programme Code: ADVANCED DIPLOMA PROGRAMME IN FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES The Programme aims to provide participants essential knowledge in financial accounting, management accounting, business analysis, taxation, business law and company law. It enables participants to acquire solid and substantial knowledge and skills in accounting for future career advancement and for pursuing their professional accounting qualifications. The Programme has been accredited by ACCA and graduates can enjoy exemptions of Papers F1 to F6 of ACCA Examination. 8. Management Accounting 9. Company Law PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The Programme comprises of 11 modules with a total of 330 contact hours. Participants may normally complete the programme in 18 months on part-time basis. Participants who successfully complete the first 5 modules (modules 1 to 5) are eligible to apply for an exit award of Diploma in Information Systems and Analysis 3. Organization and Management 4. Performance Management ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Applicants must : have 5 passes in HKCEE or equivalent qualification; OR be a mature student at age of 21 or above with relevant working experience. 5 Programme Code: ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA PROGRAMME IN FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES The Programme aims to provide participants a solid and substantial knowledge in financial reporting, auditing and corporate finance. It enables participants to acquire concrete and practical knowledge and skills in accountancy for future career advancement and for pursuing their professional qualifications in financial reporting and auditing, in particular, Papers F7 to F9 of ACCA Examination. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE This Programme comprises of 6 modules with a total of 180 contact hours. Participants may normally complete the programme in 9 months on part-time basis. 1. Financial Reporting 2. Financial Management APPLICATION FEE & TUITION FEE The total tuition fee is HK$18,600 (HK$3,100 per module) to be paid on module basis. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Applicants must have at least 2 years relevant working experience AND possess either one of the following qualification: have a sub-degree or above which has been entitled to the exemptions of ACCA Examination Papers F1 to F6; OR have successfully completed the Advanced Diploma Programme in Financial Accounting offered by CUSCS ; OR have passed the ACCA Examination Papers F1 to F6. 4

6 ASSESSMENT METHOD AND AWARD Performance of participants is monitored and assessed on a continuous basis through assessment tools such as class participation, assignments, tests and examination. 1. To qualify for the award of Advanced Diploma/ Advanced Professional Diploma in Financial Accounting by CUSCS, participants must: (a) have successfully completed all the required modules and passed the assessment by getting a pass mark of 50%; and MODE OF DELIVERY (b) have an attendance rate of at least 70% for each module. 2. To qualify for the exit award of Diploma in by CUSCS, participants must: This Programme will be delivered mainly by face-toface instruction. A variety of learning formats, such as discussion, case study and experience sharing, will be adopted to allow active participation of students so as to facilitate their learning. (a) have completed the required 5 modules (modules 1 to 5 of the Advanced Diploma in ) and passed the assessment by getting a pass mark of 50%; and MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION Teaching will be conducted in Cantonese, supplemented with English. Learning materials and examination will be in English. (b) have an attendance rate of at least 70% for each module. EXEMPTION POLICY Exemptions may be granted for a module at the discretion of our School if the applicant has successfully completed a module of equivalent content and standard at a recognized tertiary institution or through a professional examination. Exemption is normally granted at a maximum of 50% of the total number of modules. CLASS VENUE AND TIME Classes are mainly arranged in the evenings (i.e. 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.) from Monday to Friday or in the afternoon on Saturdays at School s learning centers. (The School reserves the right to alter the schedule and venue of classes if necessary.) 5

7 APPLICATION PROCEDURES Applicant is required to submit the following documents: 1. A duly completed Enrolment Form for Awardbearing Programmes ; 2. Photocopy of HKID card; 3. Photocopies of academic qualifications (i.e. transcript & certificate); 4. Photocopies of proof of working experience (i.e. reference or employment letter); 5. A crossed cheque made payable to The Chinese University of Hong Kong for the tuition fee (this is non-refundable and non-transferable under any circumstances). Admission will be on a first-come-first-serve basis for qualified applicants. All applicants will be notified in writing of their application results within 2 weeks after the application deadline. 8 MODULE DESCRIPTION ADVANCED DIPLOMA PROGRAMME IN FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING Module 1 - This module aims to develop participants understanding of the principles of recording transactions and preparing financial statements for single entities. It enables participants to acquire knowledge of how the accounting and financial reporting standards influence the presentation of financial statements and interpretation of accounting information presented in the financial reports. Module 2 - Information Systems and Analysis This module introduces the roles and functions of information systems in business operations, develops participants ability to appraise the information technology and methodology and how these can be used in the processing of business data and in making decisions. Module 3 - Organization and Management This module provides participants with the basic skills and techniques of managing organizations in both local and international environment as well as to equip participants with the basic knowledge of managing the operations of areas of production, human resource, sales and marketing of an entity. Module 4 - Cost Accounting This module enables participants to understand costing methods and cost accounting techniques, to select appropriate methods and techniques which an enterprise can be adopted to calculate its costs, to construct short-term budget statements, to analyse and evaluate variances, and to assist management in their decision making, control over daily operations and policy formation activities. Module 5 - Professional Ethics for Accountants This module aims to provide a sound foundation of the key principles and concepts of business ethics as well as techniques of handling ethical dilemmas. The professional ethical requirements required by the accounting profession will be discussed in details. Concepts of corporate governance and social responsibilities, and their development in Hong Kong as well as their relationship with accountants will also be discussed. 7

9 Module 6 - Business Law The module provides participants with knowledge of legal concepts, rules and procedures which are essential to business activities and companies. Participants will also be equipped with the major principles for governing contracts and employee protection. Module 7 - Business Analysis This module explains the need for strategic and business analysis in terms of the competitiveness of an organization and provides participants with the understanding and ability to apply the concepts and techniques of quantitative analysis to business environment, including its application to budgeting, decision making and resources allocation. Module 8 - Management Accounting This module enables participants to apply relevant knowledge and skills and exercise professional judgment in applying appropriate management accounting techniques in different business contexts so as to contribute to the control, planning and decision making in an organization. Module 9 - Company Law This module develops participants awareness of the implications of laws to companies in terms of the facilitation or limitation of the achievement of commercial or other goals, and their ability in balancing the competing interests of corporate stakeholders. Participants will have an understanding of the legal framework of corporate law and be able to apply the knowledge and skills to corporations in specific legal areas. Module 10 - Hong Kong Taxation This course introduces the tax provision and legislation for both individual and limited companies in HKSAR so as to apply its skills and knowledge of the tax system to individual and companies. Module 11 - Performance Management This module enables participants to apply relevant knowledge and skills and exercise professional judgment in selecting and applying of appropriate management accounting techniques in different business contexts in order to contribute to the performance management. The behavioral aspects and external environment that affect the assessment of performance of an entity of a division will also be discussed. 8

10 ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA PROGRAMME IN FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING Module 1 Financial Reporting This module aims to provide participants with thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of financial accounting for preparation and presentation of financial statements of business organizations and for their understanding of conceptual and regulatory framework in financial reporting. Module 2 Audit Framework This module introduces the knowledge of the auditing principles and the process of carrying out an auditing engagement. Participants will also learn the rationale for auditing in the business environment and will have an understanding of the statutory and ethical objectives of the auditor. After studying this module, participants should be able to recognize the legal, ethical principles and rules governing auditing, corporate governance and internal controls, audit evidence and audit testing, ethics and fraudulent behavior, and other current issues in auditing and assurance services. Module 3 Corporate Finance This module aims to provide participants with the basic skills and techniques of managing finance of an entity. It covers basic financial principles such as time value of money, capital budgeting, working capital management and cost of capital. Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to apply financial theory to practical short-term and long-term problems in corporate finance; to understand how finance fits into the overall business decision-making process; and to develop a working knowledge of the tools, techniques, and theories of corporate finance. Module 4 Advanced Financial Reporting This module aims to develop participants skill in communicating and interpreting financial information to user groups, with thorough knowledge for the preparation and presentation of consolidated financial statements of a group of companies. The current developments of external financial reporting are also discussed in this module. Module 5 Audit Practices This module provides participants with knowledge of the process of accepting and carrying out an auditing engagement. It enables participants to recognize audit procedures for audit risks assessment, audit planning, audit evidence accumulation for various business cycles, drawing audit conclusions and preparing audit reports. Other audit issues such as cooperation with internal audit and using the work of other experts during the auditing processes will also be covered. Module 6 Financial Management This module allows participants to integrate previously learned finance and accounting concepts and practices to contemporary business strategies, while improving financial decision-making and problemsolving skills. Participants will also examine the real-world financial management scenarios in order to apply the best practices resulting in increased value for various types of organizations. Investment appraisal techniques and decisions, risk and return tradeoffs, business and asset valuation, and risks management will be covered. 9
