How to Image a Computer Operating System Using Clonezilla Live

The majority of the readers consist of certified IT computer specialists and technicians. These instructions may also be used by other trained professionals that have an understanding of computer hard drives and partitions and have some knowledge of the hardware terminology.

2 How to Image a Computer Operating System Using Clonezilla Live The following instructions explain how to restore an operating system using Clonezilla Live. To understand these instructions you must be able to burn ISO files to a CD/DVD and in general, understand the Linux notation of hard drives and partitions. About Clonezilla Live "Clonezilla Live" is an open sourced software application that can be used to easily clone individual computers using a CD/DVD or USB flash drive. Though the image size is limited by the boot media's storage capacity, this problem can be eliminated by using a network file system such as sshfs or samba. The following actions will be accomplished: Download Clonezilla Live Configure BIOS settings Create an ISO image Restore a computer operating system Minimum system requirements. Following are the minimum system requirements you will need to use these instructions: X86 or X86-64 processor 196 MB of system memory (RAM) Boot device, e.g. CD/DVD Drive Downloading Clonezilla Live Navigate to the following web site to download the Clonezilla Live imaging application: How to download Clonezilla Live. Follow these steps to download the Clonezilla Live ISO image file: 1. Click Download an ISO file for CD/DVD. 2. Burn the Clonezilla Live ISO file to the CD/DVD. 3. Remove and store the disc.

3 Configuring the BIOS Settings Before you can create the ISO image the computer BIOS settings must be configured to boot from the CD/DVD drive. How to configure the BIOS Settings. Follow these steps to configure the BIOS settings: 1. Turn on your computer and press the <Delete> key to enter the BIOS screen. 2. Set the following parameters: a. Boot 1: CD/DVD b. Boot 2: HDD 3. Press <F10> to save the values and exit the BIOS screen. Creating the ISO Image Note: ISO refers to the ISO 9660 standard which describes the file system for CD/DVD images. Before you can restore a computer you must create an ISO image file by booting the Clonezilla Live media in the machine you want to clone. The following section describes how to create an ISO image file that you can use to restore a computer s operating system. CAUTION: Do not attempt these instructions if you are not fully confident of your skills as you may inadvertently ruin your disk, system or personal files. How to create the ISO image file. Perform the following steps to create the ISO image file. 1. Insert the Clonezilla Live CD into the CD/DVD drive. The disc automatically starts up. Note: After launching Clonezilla Live, you will need to choose which mode you want to run the software. Shell is for experienced users who can type in commands manually and remember backup and restore options. The first option is a guided wizard, which is the default setting. 2. When the following window appears, click <Ok> to select the wizard mode: Figure 1: Start Clonezilla Window

4 3. When the Choose Language window appears, select English and click <Ok>: Figure 2: Choose Language Window 4. When the following window appears, select Don t touch keymap and click <Ok>: Figure 3: Configuring Console-Data Window

5 5. When the following window appears, select device-imagine disk/partition to/from image and click <Ok>: Figure 4: Choose Mode Window 6. At the Mount clonezilla image directory window, select local_dev and click <Ok>: Figure 5: Mount Clonezilla Image Directory 7. When prompted, connect your USB harddrive and press <Enter>. 8. When the following window appears, select sdb1-26.8gb and click <Ok>: Figure 6: Opensource Clone System (OCS) Mode Window

6 Note: The harddrive option may differ in name if using another external USB harddrive, sdb1 is always the mounted USB drive. 9. When the following window appears, select / Top_directory_in_the_local_device and click <Ok>: Figure 7: Opensource Clone System (OCS) Window 10. When the following confirmation window appears, press <Enter>: Figure 8: Disk Space Confirmation Window 11. When the the Clonezilla - Opensource Clone System window appears, select Beginner and click <Ok>. 12. When the Clonezilla-Select Mode window appears, select savedisk to save the image. 13. When prompted, enter the name of the image and click <Ok>: Figure 9: Input a Name Window

7 14. When the following window appears, select hda1, as the source to be imaged, and click <Ok>: Figure 10: Select Source Partition Window 15. When the Confirm your choice window appears, press <Enter>. Note: The imaging process begins. It takes 4-5 minutes for a typical installation. 16. When the following window appears, select Poweroff and remove and store the disc. Figure 11: Clonezilla Finished Window

8 Restoring a Computer Operating System The following section describes how to restore a computer operating system using the recovery disk that was created in the previous section titled, Creating the ISO Image. How to restore the computer operating system. Perform the following steps to restore a computer operating system using the recovery disk. 1. Insert the recovery disk into the CD/DVD drive. The disk automatically starts up. 2. When the following window appears, select restoreparts and click <Ok>: Figure 12: Clonezilla: Select Mode Window 3. When the following window appears, choose the image file to restore and click <Ok>: Figure 13: Clonezilla Select Mode Window

9 4. The Partclone window appears displaying the cloning status: Figure 14: Clonezilla Partclone Window 5. When prompted, select (1) reboot, and press <Enter>. The system will begin to reboot and ejects the recovery disk. Remove and store the recovery disk. The partition has been restored and the system is now ready operations.
