1 First Look TM Curriculum for Preschoolers We want preschoolers to take a first look at who God is and understand... God made me. God loves me. Jesus wants to be my friend forever. April 7/8, 2012 Basic Truth: Jesus wants to be my friend forever. Key Question: Who is your friend? Memory Verse: A friend loves at all times. Proverbs 17:17, NIrV Bible Story: Easter Jesus loves me. The Lord s Supper, Resurrection Matthew 26:20-30; 28:1-7 Make It Fun (Introductory Activities, 20 minutes) Prepare to offer one or more of the following activities as your 3-, 4-, or 5-year-olds arrive. Let one or two teachers lead activities in different areas of the room while another teacher greets parents and kids at the door. 1. Be My Friend What You Need: The book Do You Want to Be My Friend? by Eric Carle. What You Do: Sit with the children and read the book, Do You Want to be My Friend? by Eric Carle. After you read the book, have everyone stand up, hold hands, and walk in a circle while you lead the children in singing the first verse of the song The More We Get Together. Later, reverse the direction you are walking while continuing to sing. What You Say: After you read the book: The little mouse in the story was asking everyone to be his friend. I like having friends. Do you like having friends? Sure you do! And look at all the friends we have here today! Let s stand up and sing a song with our friends! (Singing) The more we get together, together, together, The more we get together, the happier we'll be. Your friends are my friends, and my friends are your friends. The more we get together, the happier we'll be. (Repeat.) At the end of the activity: Friends are very special. Our Bible story today is about the BEST friend we will EVER have. 3 Make It True (Large Group, 15 minutes) After children have participated in Make It Fun, gather them for a large group time that includes interactive worship, introductory sketch and Bible story. Make It Stick (Application Activities, 25 minutes) These activities are designed to help preschoolers understand and remember today s Bible story and Bottom Line. Offer as many of the following activities as your time, facilities, resources, and leadership allow. You may want to lead one activity at a time. Or offer two activities at once and allow half the kids to participate in each, then switch groups and repeat the activities. 1. Memory Verse Song What You Need: The lyrics below. What You Do: Teach the kids the following song to the tune of Three Blind Mice. A friend loves, A friend loves, At all times, At all times, A friend loves at all times. A friend loves at times, Proverbs 17:17, Proverbs 17:17. What You Say: That is a fun song to sing. It goes very fast. Our Bible verse tells us that a friend loves us no matter what we do. Whether we make bad choices or we are very good, a friend ALWAYS shows love. That is what Jesus does. No matter what we do, HE ALWAYS SHOWS US LOVE! Jesus is a true friend! Who is your friend? Jesus is my good friend. 2. Empty Tomb What You Need: Tomb Activity Page, gauze pads, brass brads, glue, brown cardstock, and construction paper. What You Do: Give each child a Tomb Activity Page, a piece of gauze, and the tomb door. Instruct kids to glue the gauze pads inside the tomb. Finally, help each child attach the door to the tomb with the brad so it will open and close Orange. All rights reserved. 3

4 What You Say: Everyone has done a wonderful job making the craft. Do you see the door on the tomb? Everyone open the door and look what is inside the tomb? (Pause.) That's right. There s just a blanket. Do you see Jesus in the tomb? (Pause.) No! Jesus is not in the tomb! JESUS IS ALIVE! Jesus was buried in the tomb, but on the third day He came back. He is alive! That s why we celebrate Easter. You can take this project home and tell your family the story of how Jesus LIVES! He lives today and wants to be everyone's friend. Who is your friend? 5 Make It Real (Small Groups, 5 minutes) Make It Real is designed to help preschoolers understand how the Bottom Line applies to them. They ll discuss real-life experiences and share prayer requests. Divide kids into small groups of about five to eight children with each leader. Ideally, assign the same small group leader to the same group of preschoolers for the entire year. Small Group Time What You Need: Bible marked at Proverbs 17:17 with Memory Verse Card. SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): Easter is a special day because it s when we celebrate that Jesus is alive and He loves you and me very much. It s when we remember all that He has done to show us how much He loves us. Let s practice our new memory verse. It will help us remember how much Jesus loves us! (Open your Bible to the verse.) CHILDREN and SGL: A friend loves at all times, Proverbs 17:17. (Say the verse two or three times together.) SGL: Jesus always, always, ALWAYS loves you and me. Let s make a list of when Jesus loves you and me. Remember, Jesus loves us at ALL times, so there won t be a wrong answer! (Make a list with the kids. Answers could include when we sleep, are at school, are playing with friends, are mad, are sad, are happy, are sick, etc.) SGL: It looks like Jesus really does love us all the time! Let s pray and thank Jesus for loving us during all of the times we listed. Prayer: Jesus, thank You for loving us when we (insert times from your list). You really are a good, good friend. Amen. Get Ready to Dismiss Set any take-home creations where you or parents can get them easily. Hand parents a copy of this week s Parent Cue.
