1 (HMC, IAPS, Co-educational, 750 students aged 7-18) Head of Outdoor Pursuits and Contingent Commander of the CCF For September 2014 The School Fettes College, founded in 1870 and administered by the Governors of the Fettes Trust, is an independent school of some 750 boys and girls. There are 560 students in the Senior School (13-18 years), of whom 75% are boarders, and 190 students in the Preparatory School (7-13 years). The School is in membership of AGBIS (Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools). The academic staff consists of the Headmaster (a member of the Headmasters and Headmistresses Conference), the Headmaster of the Fettes College Preparatory School (a member of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools) and seventy-five full-time members of the Common Room. There is a strong Old Fettesian Association. The School stands in a magnificent park of approximately 100 acres close to the centre of Edinburgh. The main building contains the Chapel, the Library, some classrooms, the Medical Centre and two boarding houses. The Preparatory School and the other six boarding houses, the Dining Hall, the Music and Art Schools, the Concert Hall, the Science laboratories, a classroom block, the Sports Centre, the All-weather Games Pitch, squash and fives courts are situated in the grounds. A new boarding house has been built adjacent to the Science School to accommodate the whole of the Upper Sixth Form. There are extensive playing fields. The College has been fully co-educational since Head of Outdoor Pursuits Aims of the post of Responsibility To co-ordinate and develop all extra-curricular outdoor pursuits at the School, including those pertaining to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, in line with the aims, policies and development plans of the school. To promote enthusiasm for and enjoyment of outdoor pursuits and to integrate outdoor education into the breadth of the educational experience available to Fettes students. Specific Responsibilities of Head of Outdoor Pursuits Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions To lead and manage the Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions at the School. To appoint Instructors as may be necessary to instruct and lead the pupils in a wide range of modes of travel in Scotland and, possibly, abroad.

2 Outdoor Pursuits Skills and Expeditions To organize and promote a range of outdoor activities for small groups of pupils on Sundays, or other convenient times. To encourage students to develop their skills in outdoor activities and to provide support for the PE and the Games Department in this respect. To plan and organize expeditions, at home and abroad, ensuring that procedures are implemented, including letters and consent forms for parents, risk assessments, training for participants, equipment etc. Leadership and Teamwork Development To promote and administer residential teamwork and leadership events for the Fourth Form and new entrants to the Sixth Form. To help with the organization of outdoor activities and events for the Third Form Field Week. Maintenance of Equipment and Facilities To oversee the provision and maintenance of the resources for outdoor pursuits. Child Protection, Discipline, Health and Safety To promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact. To ensure that effective policies are in place so that the needs of all pupils are met as appropriate. To conduct appropriate risk assessments and to manage risk in outdoor activities. To maintain good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguard their health and safety both when they are on the School Premises and when they are engaged in school activities elsewhere. To ensure the School s Health and Safety Policy is implemented fully within the department. Communication and Meetings To liaise, communicate and work with the outdoor instructor community in Scotland who help deliver the outdoor activities programme at School. This includes the National Governing Bodies responsible for activities that may be done by our pupils. To liaise, communicate and work with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Officer, the national and local Duke of Edinburgh authorities as required. To inform and communicate with Housemasters and Housemistresses and, when necessary, with parents of the pupils under your charge. To conduct department meetings, ensuring the provision of agendas and minutes. To ensure the discussion and transmission of departmental issues and policies to all relevant parties. To support effective communication by forwarding minutes and conclusions of meetings and any other documentation to the relevant members of the department, to senior management and to other members of middle management. To keep the Headmaster/Deputy Headmaster informed about issues and progress. To be aware of the departmental website entry and be responsible for providing up-to-date, accurate information or updates to the website coordinator. Finance To formulate the department s annual budget, to monitor expenditure and keep an inventory of equipment and all other resources.

3 Additional Line Management and Responsibilities To plan, staff and organize the annual calendar of events, liaising with the Assistant Headmaster to ensure as few clashes as possible with other activities/events. To attend training sessions, expeditions, and other events, as necessary. To keep up-to-date with Duke of Edinburgh developments and regulations and implement changes as appropriate. To ensure that displays/material are in place for School newsletters, Open Days and other events. To ensure that relevant policies and procedures are implemented and updated annually. To participate in the appointment of staff to the department and in the drawing up of their specific job descriptions (if required). To promote development and training opportunities for the department. To line manage members of the department. Contingent Commander of the CCF Aims of the post of Responsibility To lead and manage the Combined Cadet Force in order to enable pupils to develop powers of leadership through military training and to promote the qualities of responsibility, self-reliance, endurance, resourcefulness and perseverance among participating students. Specific Responsibilities of Contingent Commander of the CCF To recommend appointments as SSI and contingent officers to fill established posts. To line mange the school s SSI. To oversee the Training Programme and ensure that all pupils are actively engaged according to school and MoD policy. To oversee arrangements for all exercises, camps, adventure training and training days. To oversee the effective introduction and then sustainment of the 909 programme under the auspices of the CCF. To oversee discipline and fitness of school staff and cadets whilst undertaking CCF training. To organise leadership training for School Prefects. To co-ordinate the BTEC programmes in Public Services and Music. To oversee the overall care and maintenance of MOD issued equipment with particular emphasis on the safe storage of arms and ammunition. To keep staff and parents informed of activities in which pupils are engaged. To ensure with the SSI that accurate registers are maintained (using WESTMINSTER) and missed attendance is followed up and appropriate action is taken. To chair the CCF meetings. To be responsible for cadets reports. To co-ordinate continuing Professional Development of staff involved in CCF. To act as first point of contact for pupils wishing to find out about Service careers. To arrange and co-ordinate SLO visits from the various Services Manage all Contingent MOD and Private accounts. To oversee Health and Safety of all CCF activities including Risk Assessments, testing of staff in Pam 21/Pam 5C, insuring qualifications held are in date and current To oversee with the SSI the safe weapons handling testing of all personnel 6 monthly in each weapons system used. To represent Fettes College at the appropriate MoD, DCFS and related Committee meetings and keep the head appraised of developments within the CCF. To support the Pipes and Drums in any way that becomes appropriate.

4 Other Key Responsibilities Carry out an evening duty in a boarding house. Carry out a daytime duty in the Senior School eg teach an academic subject at least to GCSE level or coach a major sport. This Job Description outlines the current duties for this post and it indicates the level of commitment and responsibilities expected. Person Specification Attributes Essential Desirable How identified Qualifications and Experience CV/ Interview Be an active member or leader of a CCF or ACF (or tri-service equivalent), or have served recently as an officer or warrant officer in the Armed Forces. Have at least one outdoor educational training qualification (preferably water or mountain leader) suitable for teaching children across all age-ranges Have a good understanding of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme. Appropriate riffle range qualification and to be current and competent in the cadet weapons or to be willing to attend courses, as necessary to become and maintain competence. Must hold a driving license with a Dl classification and be prepared to drive school minibuses. Be willing to undergo further military / civilian qualification training as required. Must be First Aid Trained. Have commanded, or are currently commanding, a CCF or ACF (or triservice equivalent) Have a wide range of outdoor educational training qualifications suitable to teach children across all age-ranges. Have led at least one of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme levels and therefore appropriately expedition leader qualified. Previous experience of organising adventurous training expeditions overseas. Ideally SPA Qualified Skills/ Knowledge and Abilities Previous experience of working with and influencing at SMT level or equivalent in the Regular or Reserve Forces or other similar body. Ability to teach children across all age ranges. Proven track record in leadership and management, or be able to demonstrate that you have this competence. Be an excellent communicator and team player, able to use initiative as well as take direction. Previous experience in an educational environment. Commanded or are currently commanding a CCF or ACF (or triservice equivalent). CV/ Interview

5 Conditions of the Appointment 1. The appointment will date from the start of the Autumn Term Salary will be by negotiation and will depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. 3. Children of Members of Staff who attend the School as day students are eligible for 15% fees at Fettes, and the School is in membership of The Scheme for The Education of the Children of Teaching Staff. 4.
