General 1. This document is to be used as a guide in the implementation of the Duke of Edinburgh program. If there is a disagreement between this document and the Duke of Edinburgh information booklet, the booklet takes precedence over this document. Please consult with your provincial office on those instances. 2. The age requirements for the Duke of Edinburgh program are as follows: a. Bronze Award: a cadet can start counting hours once they have reached the age of 13 and a half but may not apply to receive the award before their 14 th birthday; b. Silver Award: a cadet must have reached their 15 th birthday; and c. Gold Award: a cadet must have reached their 16 th birthday. 3. A participant may not use the same activity to qualify for more than one section of the Program. For example, sailing may not be used both as a Skill and as a Physical Recreation activity. 4. A cadet may apply for Direct Entry into a higher Award level without completing the previous level as long as they have reached the age requirement as set out by the program. LHQ Training Assuming that the age requirement of the Award Program is met, the following training may be applied towards Award Program objectives: 5. Bronze Level: 5.1 Service To qualify at the bronze level, a Cadet must perform fifteen (15) hours of service over six (6) months. These activities may be performed within or outside the Corps. Some common Cadet related activities that qualify for this section are: a. Remembrance Day parade; b. Cadets Caring for Canada; c. LHQ service as an NCO (youth leader); 1/11

d. Instruction at the LHQ; e. Christmas parades; f. Participating in Legion Poppy campaign; g. Food drives; and h. Any other community related service. 5.2 Expeditions The expedition section of the award requires that a practice journey be conducted prior to the qualifying journey. The practice journey must not be conducted at the same location as the qualifying journey and does require an overnight stay. At the bronze level, the qualifying journey must be no less than two (2) days in duration, including an overnight stay. For the qualifying journey, a mode of travel (i.e. hiking, cycling, canoeing, skiing, etc.) must be chosen. A schedule is also required including a distance to be covered or daily activity of no less than six (6) hours per day depending on the mode of travel chosen. The following Performance Objectives would provide most of the necessary preliminary training: a. Green Star (level 1) PO /11, /04 b. Red Star (level 2) PO /06, /07 c. Silver Star (level 3) PO /03, PO /03. d. Gold Star (level 4) PO /04. If the participants have not completed the training listed above through the mandatory training program, the equivalent training should be provided to them outside the training schedule. First aid training should also be provided. The overnight survival outing included in the mandatory training program satisfies the practice journey requirement provided that the Cadets actively participate in the set-up and operation of the site. The qualifying journey must be conducted as a separate activity. Consult the Duke of Edinburgh handbook for details before planning the expedition. 5.3 Skills At the bronze level, a skill must be followed consistently for a period of at least six (6) months and the participant must show an improvement. A skill may be changed once at each award level. It should be noted that the skills listed below, as they apply to the training program, may not satisfy the requirements of the award by themselves. They may, however, be used as a starting point for the 2/11

skills requirement. The list below shows some examples of skills that a Cadet may acquire through the mandatory and/or optional training program: a. Participation in the Corps Band; b. Flag party; c. Drill Team; d. Marksmanship; e. Effective Speaking; f. Classroom Instruction; g. First Aid; h. Orienteering. 5.4 Physical Fitness The qualification for the Physical Fitness portion of the award consists of participation in some type of physical activity for a minimum of thirty (30) hours over fifteen (15) weeks for participants at the bronze level. A Cadet may count a maximum of two (2) hours per week towards this section of the award. If the Cadet Corps conducts an optional sports program, or the Cadet participates in sports outside the Corps, this time all counts towards the completion of this section. Activities within the training program (mandatory or optional) also qualify for this section. Some examples include: 6. Silver Level: a. The Army Cadet Fitness Program; b. Drill Team; c. Team sports; d. Swimming; e. Biathlon; f. Orienteering; 6.1 Service To qualify at the silver level, a Cadet must perform forty-five (45) hours of service over twelve (12) months. The requirement is reduced to thirty (30) hours over six (6) months if the Cadet has completed the bronze level. These activities may be performed within or outside the Corps. Some common Cadet related activities that qualify for this section are: a. Remembrance Day parade; 3/11

The qualifying journey must be conducted as a separate activity. Consult the Duke of Edinburgh handbook for details before planning the expedition. 6.3 Skills At the silver level, a skill must be followed consistently for a period of at least twelve (12) months and the participant must show an improvement. The requirement is reduced to six (6) months if the Cadet has completed the bronze level. A skill may be changed once at each award level. It should be noted that the skills listed below, as they apply to the training program, may not satisfy the 4/11

requirements of the award by themselves. They may, however, be used as a starting point for the skills requirement. The list below shows some examples of skills that a Cadet may acquire through the mandatory and/or optional training program: a. Participation in the Corps Band; b. Flag party; c. Drill Team; d. 8 8. Assessment and Record-keeping for Cadets who attend Summer Training will not be the responsibility of Corps staff. Dedicated Duke of Edinburgh personnel or Training staff will verify the cadet s participation in suitable activities at the CSTC. However, the following outline is provided so that Corps staff can advise cadets as to the requirements they can expect their courses to fulfill. All activities listed can be applied to any award level unless otherwise indicated, provided the age requirement and other prerequisites for the award are met. These are guidelines only. In the event of a disagreement between these guidelines and the opinion of CSTC staff or Duke of Edinburgh representatives, the latter will generally be correct. These guidelines reflect the summer training opportunities in place at the time of writing. Future changes in the Summer Training Programs will affect the degree to which courses allow Duke of Edinburgh candidate cadets to meet the requirements of the Award. Where credit for a skill has been given, it is usually the major skill subject matter of the course, meaning drill in Drill and Ceremonial, shooting on marksmanship courses, et cetera 8.1. 11 Exchanges- Outward Bound Wales Outward Bound Scotland Maple Leaf Germany Exchange Foreign Exchange Bisley Exchange. Due to the various natures of the exchanges, from location to location and year to year, it is impossible to speak of them in terms of how they fulfill Duke of Edinburgh requirements. Credit toward any Award level will be dependant upon the exchange and the conditions under which it is conducted in a given year. a. Service: Dependant upon the conduct of the exchange. b. Skill: Dependant upon the conduct of the exchange. c. Physical Recreation: Dependant upon the conduct of the exchange. e. Expedition: Dependant upon the conduct of the exchange. 8.6 Other Activities: Foreign and Domestic expeditions, etc. Because these are not regularly scheduled cadet activities but rather stand- alone events, it is impossible to speak of them in terms of how they fulfill Duke of Edinburgh requirements. Credit toward any Award level will be dependant upon how the exchange or activity is conducted in a given year. The same is true of any other activity not listed here. a. Service: Dependant upon the conduct of the expedition. b. Skill: Dependant upon the conduct of the expedition. c. Physical Recreation: Can generally count as two (2) hours per week for the duration of the expedition toward this requirement. e. Expedition: Dependant upon the conduct of the expedition. 11/11
