1 February 2014 Dear Applicant Re: Position of Assistant Principal Teaching, Learning and Assessment I am delighted to provide an application pack for the role of Assistant Principal Teaching, Learning and Assessment at Huddersfield New College. Hopefully the information provided will be of interest and help you in taking your application forward. The College has operated since 1974 and across the 40 years to 2014 has established a national reputation for pastoral care and support and value added success. With currently around 2400 students on roll the College had its last OFSTED inspection in October These strengths were recognised. The report is available to view at In 2013, the College celebrated its best results ever, with value added performance at A2 and on BTEC courses in the top 20% nationally. The keynote for Huddersfield New College is exemplified in our strap line Success for All. We want to achieve success for all and we are committed to this. It is crucial to achieving this that we are at all times positive about what our students can do; this means genuinely embracing a you can do it culture within a we can do it framework that will inspire our young people to learn and to achieve their best. Duties and responsibilities: In the first instance, your duties and responsibilities are listed below. As the needs of the College change, you will be required to take on or relinquish responsibilities as directed by the Principal. A. Teaching, Learning and Assessment 1) To have overall responsibility for the quality of teaching, learning and assessment 2) To lead and promote the development of innovative and effective teaching, learning and assessment practices, which are responsive to learners needs and interests and which promote good student outcomes.

4 3) To work with the Teaching, Learning and Assessment Good Practice Coordinator to develop and promote the sharing of best practice in teaching, learning and assessment across departments and to foster a genuine commitment to continuous improvement in professional practice. 4) To work with the Associate Senior Leader - ILT to support the development of ILT and e-learning strategies as a tool to enhance teaching, learning and assessment. 5) To work with the Senior Leader - Literacy and Oracy (including Learner Voice - Curriculum) to ensure an influential Learner Voice in relation to the development and continuous improvement of Teaching, Learning and Assessment. 6) To lead on the College s departmental review process and the teaching and learning observation process, analysing and reporting annually to Governors, the Principal and Senior Leadership Team on areas of strengths and weaknesses in relation to teaching, learning and assessment across the College and in individual departments, and recommending, where appropriate, strategies to drive up standards in teaching, learning and assessment both within departments and across college. 7) To line manage and deploy effectively the Teaching, Learning and Assessment Review team and Teaching, Learning and Assessment Champions. 8) To support the Principal and Deputy Principal - Student Outcomes in the recruitment and selection of high calibre teaching staff and others as related to area of responsibility. 9) To have lead responsibility for the quality and consistency of schemes of work across departments and to ensure these promote Equality and Diversity and develop Literacy, Numeracy and Oracy. 10) To have lead responsibility for the development, implementation, monitoring and review of the college s assessment framework, to ensure students knowledge and understanding are assessed regularly and that students receive good feedback which enables them to improve, make progress and achieve good outcomes. 11) To work with the Deputy Principal - Student Outcomes and the Assistant Principal Student Experience to develop rigorous student progress monitoring systems to ensure student progress is monitored effectively against expected outcomes and, in particular, to lead on ensuring appropriate individual support and challenge is provided for the gifted aiming for high grades and top universities, as appropriate to need, if achieving these high grades seems to have become a risk. 12) To lead on the marketing, enrolment process, extra-curricular provision and enrichment for Gifted students. 13) To line manage the Oxbridge/HE Plus Coordinator. B. Continuing Professional Development and Performance Management 1) To line manage the Staff Development Manager. 2) To work with the Staff Development Manager to develop a Continuous Professional Development Policy and an annual staff training and development plan which translates this policy into practice and which responds to training and development needs, as identified through Performance Management Reviews and Departmental Reviews, especially in relation to Teaching, Learning and Assessment. 3) To promote the continuous professional development of high calibre teaching and support staff through timely, cost effective and appropriate CPD for all staff. 4) To instil ambition in teachers to be leaders in their field. 5) To work with the Assistant Principal Staffing and the Deputy Principal - Student Outcomes with the management of the work performance of teaching staff, as appropriate.

Literacy, Numeracy and Oracy, and Equality and Diversity 1) To lead, with the Senior Leader - Literacy and Oracy (including Learner Voice - Curriculum) and Head of Department - Maths and Numeracy, the development of literacy, numeracy and oracy across the curriculum and in teaching and learning. 2) To line manage the Senior Leader - Literacy and Oracy (including Learner Voice - Curriculum). 3) To line manage the Head of Department - Maths and Numeracy. 4) To lead on the embedding of Equality and Diversity in Teaching and Learning D. Curriculum Development and Management 1) To work with the Deputy Principal Student Outcomes to ensure that there is an annual review of the curriculum offer and that the curriculum offer continues to meet students needs and interests and allows progression to the world of work or university 2) To share day to day curriculum management with the Deputy Principal Student Outcomes by having direct responsibility for a nominated number of Heads of Department. E. Strategy 1) To lead in the translation of the strategic plan into operational planning and measurable delivery. 2) To provide positive leadership by creating a dynamic, supportive and innovative environment that encourages commitment to the College and the achievement of high standards of performance. 3) To promote all policies and procedures, but particularly those relating to Safeguarding, Health and Safety, and Equality and Diversity. 4) To contribute to strategic planning processes and documents. 5) As a member of the SLT, to advise the Principal on all relevant college issues. 6) To assist the Principal in the strategic management and leadership of the College to achieve its mission, goals and strategic plan. 7) To engage in professional development to ensure that professional and strategic contributions are up to date. F. External Relations 1) To maintain and develop the reputation of the College in all sectors of the community, and to develop appropriate partnerships and good relations with local schools, employers, higher education, local authorities and other agencies. 2) To represent and actively promote the College in the community. G. Resources 1) As a member of SLT, to have direct responsibility for line managing the staff reporting directly to the post-holder, including setting clear, measurable and stretching targets and conducting regular performance reviews and development interviews. 2) As a member of SLT to contribute to corporate responsibility for the College budget. 3) To manage within a delegated budget or oversee the effective budget management of middle managers for the acquisition, deployment of equipment, materials and accommodation.

6 4) To be a key account holder. H. Additional Duties 1) A teaching commitment of 4.5 hours per week. I. General duties and responsibilities The post holder is required to: 1) Perform his/her duties in accordance with the College s Equal Opportunities Policy. 2) Ensure the health and safety of all staff and resources within his/her area(s) of responsibility, i.e. delegated responsibility in relation to the nature of the post holder s duties and personal responsibilities as per Sections 7 and 8 of the Health and Safety at Work Act ) Share in the College s commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. 4) Participate in the College s performance management review scheme. 5) Undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) relevant to his/her post. 6) Perform any other duties as may be reasonably required from time to time by the Principal and other members of the Senior Leadership Team. J. Special features of the post As a member of the College s Senior Leadership Team the post holder will work in an environment of constant change and pressure where a high level of personal decision-making and judgement is required. The post holder must have the ability to work with a wide range of people of all ages from different backgrounds with very different needs and to respond accordingly to support those needs. The duties and responsibilities attached to this role demand a flexible approach to work, which will include occasional evenings and work in non-term-time. The post holder will be required to sign and return to the Human Resources department a copy of their job description, which will be reviewed periodically. 7 Huddersfield New College Further Education Corporation Person Specification - Guide to Applicants The Person Specification details the principal skills and personal attributes the post holder must possess and actively demonstrate in order to effectively fulfil the role. The criteria are ranked as Essential and Desirable and your application form should demonstrate how you meet these criteria and possess the key skills relevant to the job. The ranking of criteria on the person specification can be explained as follows: Essential Desirable The successful candidate must meet the Essential criteria in full on the first day of commencing in post, in order to be able to effectively fulfil the role to which he/she has been appointed. The post holder needs to meet the Desirable criteria to fulfil the role on a longer-term, permanent basis. The successful candidate would be expected to develop his/her skills and knowledge within an agreed timescale (usually within six to twelve months of his/her start date) to meet the Desirable criteria in full, if they are unable to demonstrate they meet these criteria at short-listing and interview stage. 10 Huddersfield New College Further Education Corporation Further Particulars Post Title: Post Reference: Assistant Principal Teaching, Learning and Assessment SLT1314/01 Salary: The salary for this post will be on the E+ salary range for members of the senior leadership, which is the range 50,782-54,924 per annum. Starting salary will normally be at the bottom of the scale. Conditions of Appointment Appointment will be to a contract of employment with Huddersfield New College working to the terms and conditions of service for senior leaders under the following main provisions: Working Week: Holiday Entitlement: Pension: Annual Review: Notice: Sickness and Maternity/Paternity/Adoption: Disciplinary & Grievance: You will be expected to work such hours as are reasonably necessary for the proper performance of your duties and responsibilities, with a minimum of 37 hours per week. The normal College s teaching timetable currently operates between 9.00am and 4.15pm Monday to Thursday and 9.00am to 3.45pm on Fridays. You will be entitled to 40 days holiday per year plus statutory/public holidays recognised by the College up to a maximum of 12.5 days. The holiday year runs from 1 st September to 31 st August each year. The nature of this post requires annual leave to be taken in non-term time. You will be entitled to participate in the Teachers Pension Scheme at a rate of 10.1% of salary, with an employer contribution of 14.1%. The Scheme requires members to be contracted out of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme (SERPS). Alternatively you may make your own arrangements with regard to pension. You will be required to participate in the College s performance management review scheme. The contract may be terminated by either party by giving at least 2 months notice. If the employment is terminated by reason of redundancy, statutory and/or contractual notice periods will apply. In all cases notice must be given in writing. The Corporation s policies will apply. 11 Disclosure and Barring Service Check: Appointment is subject to you obtaining a satisfactory Enhanced Criminal Records Check through the Disclosure and Barring Service. The cost of this check is 44.00, which will be deducted from your first salary payment. The successful candidate will be required to provide relevant evidence to enable a DBS check to be undertaken prior to commencement of employment. Further details will be given upon appointment. You will also be required to subscribe to the DBS Update Service at the time of applying for a new DBS Disclosure, if you have not already registered, and to maintain that subscription on an annual basis.
