1 Our Lady of Sorrows 21 East Sola St., Santa Barbara, CA Tel: Fax: Baptism Invitation to Life Our Lady of Sorrows Parish rejoices with you over the birth of your child. The Sacrament of Baptism, whereby the initial process of life with Christ and within his reign begins, is always an exciting and meaningful experience. It is one that strengthens our families individually and confirms our parish community as a People of God. You have already begun sharing life with your child. You have entered into a lifelong commitment to bring that child into life and to support him or her in physical, mental and spiritual growth. Through you, God in His creative power has summoned this special child into existence. An invitation to another life a life centered in Christ is extended to your child through the waters of Baptism. Baptism signifies and begins a life-long journey of growth in relationship with God and his people, the Christian community. May the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit fill you with renewed life and grace as you prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism for your child. So that Baptism may clearly appear as the sacrament of the Church s faith and of admittance into the people of God, it is celebrated in the parish church. The following Baptism information is designed to answer your questions and help you prepare for the special day. Please review this information thoroughly before filling out the Baptism application on pages 5 6 and call the Rectory Office (805) with any questions. We look forward to celebrating your child s Baptism with you at Our Lady of Sorrows. Our Lady of Sorrows 21 East Sola St., Santa Barbara CA 93101, Tel. (805) Fax. (805)
2 Parents If the child does not live with both parents, the single parent must submit the proper document(s) indicating legal custody of the child with the authority to make all decisions regarding the child. In the absence of this paperwork, a notarized letter from the non-custodial parent giving permission for their child to be baptized is acceptable. Godparents Godparents have a special role of praying for and being good Christian example to their Godchild. Only one male sponsor and/or one female sponsor can act as Godparent(s). Additional sponsors are welcome, but only two names will appear on the Baptismal Certificate as Godparent(s). Godparents must be: 1. Confirmed Catholics in good standing 2. At least 16 years of age Since the Sacrament of Baptism marks the beginning of faith, parents and Godparents must attend a preparation class in advance of the ceremony.
