2 1/20/2003 Page 3-2 Folder (aka( Directory) Full Path Name Same naming convention as file names, except extensions typically not used Analogy: Disk drive - file cabinet drawer Folder - file folder File - memo, letter drive directory filename extension C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM Can have multiple directories between drive letter and file name 7 8 Reset Types Hardware reset Press reset button Turn computer off, then turn back on Software reset Start Shut Down... Press <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <Del> keys Press Shut Down button Can interrupt start of software reset to change BIOS settings (look for message) Hardware Reset / Cold Boot Power On Self Test (POST) CPU ROM System board support circuitry RAM (counter in upper left) Major peripherals: disks, printer Plug & Play: compare last known configuration data with currently detected hardware If OK, do software reset procedure 9 10 Software Reset / Warm Boot Look for ROM programs on adapter cards Read boot record (track 0 sector 1) from drive A: or C: (could also be CD-ROM drive) Load IO.SYS & MSDOS.SYS Load Windows 98 Mousing Around Mouse pointer Usually an arrow Hot spot is just beyond tip Click - press and release left mouse button Double click - rapidly click twice Drag - press and hold left mouse button and then move pointer 11 12
