1 Name Date Hour The Giver Scrapbook Assignment Since one theme of The Giver focuses on the importance of memories, you are going to be creating Jonas memory scrapbook. The scrapbook will include symbols to represent different aspects of the novel, significant moments, and a book review. Symbolism in The Giver: In your scrapbook you will create 7 different symbols to represent Jonas and his journey throughout the novel. Each symbol must be printed out or neatly drawn. I will provide construction paper and white paper if you need it. You are not required to use additional materials but you may if you wish. You will also need to create a front and back cover of your choice. The front cover should include a title for your project, the title of the novel (The Giver), the author of the novel (Louis Lowry), and your name. Each symbol page must contain 4 items: 1) The title at the top (See bold captions on the think sheet) 2) The picture of the symbol you chose 3) The name of the symbol you chose (i.e. teddy bear, coffee mug, etc.) 4) A description of why you chose that symbol and how it represents the section. You must also answer any questions that are on the think sheet for the symbol and relate your description back to the text. Significant Moments of The Giver Your scrapbook will also contain five significant moment assignments; one for each of the following chapters: chapters 1-5, chapters 6-, chapters 11-15, chapters 16-20, and chapters Each significant moment assignment must include the follow criteria: 1) At least three significant moments from the designated chapters. 2) A paragraph for each significant moment describing why it is significant. You must write your paragraphs in complete sentence using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation. 3) Each significant moment must include at least one piece of direct textual evidence with the page number cited. The Giver Book Review For the book review element of your scrapbook you will be required to write a brief summary of The Giver, along with what you think the author s purpose was in writing the novel. You must also include your opinion of the book with quotations and evidence to back up your ideas. Lastly, like any good book review, you will explain why you would or wouldn t recommend this book. Put thought into the colors (or lack of colors) that you use on your scrapbook pages. Make sure that your scrapbook is neat and visual. You may bind it any functional way that you wish.
