1 EDA 1200 Solutions point-to-point deep fiber access

2 Optical fiber has now begun to replace the copper loop as the preferred access medium for fixed access networks. A fiber access network architecture chosen by many operators is a point-to-point (P2P) Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) solution as it offers virtually unlimited symmetrical bandwidth. Other key benefits are high scalability and service transparency, which means the ability to provide any service regardless of other users in the network. P2P fiber also offers optimal security as each line is dedicated to a single end user a feature required by many large businesses. An Attractive Business Case The outside plant (OSP) is the most valuable asset to any access network operator. Some incumbent operators have already built FTTH networks to support their high-speed, content rich, multimedia service offerings. Even though FTTH requires a considerable upfront investment, upgrades to active FTTH systems have often proven to be the most attractive business case from a perspective on the future. P2P fiber is especially cost-effective for greenfield sites where investment in construction for new access infrastructure is already required. Compared to copper and hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) networks, OPEX will be considerably lower as P2P fiber provides the best distance-bandwidth solution with fewer number of active elements required in the network. This reduction in active elements in the OSP also results in a lower OPEX. Opening the Access Network P2P fiber is a mature technology that enables dedicated symmetric broadband with speeds up to 1 Gbps. P2P fiber is also the simplest way to deploy an open access network with active Ethernet technology and it provides optimal flexibility in terms of future bandwidth upgrades and unbundling. P2P fiber implies a considerable number of fibers terminate in the Central Office. This is not a major obstacle, as Ericsson s solution includes micro cables with a high fiber count of up to 96 fibers. In addition, optical distribution frames (ODFs) and fiber management systems handle the fiber in an efficient and elegant manner making our P2P fiber solution easily scalable for open access networks. Our goal is to assist both existing and new alternative operators in deploying open fiber access networks that are operator-neutral and that allow numerous service providers to offer their service. 2

3 P2P Deep Fiber Access Ericsson s Deep Fiber Access is a complete solution for the planning, deploying and operating of P2P based deep fiber access networks. It includes passive fiber infrastructure, active equipment, indoor and outdoor site solutions and management systems. Also included are various consultancy and customer project services, network design, integration and implementation, hosting and managed services. The services from the network are now connected to the customer via the corresponding Customer Premise Equipment (CPE). For FTTB, typical CAT5 Ethernet Residential Gateways (RGs) are used. For FTTH, Ericsson offers a series of Optical Network Terminations (ONTs) providing simple modem to complete RG functions. The EDA 1200 P2P solution of active equipment comprises a series of access nodes, aggregation switches, customer premise equipment and network management. The EDA 1200 P2P solution has been selected and deployed by many large incumbent operators as their choice for fiber based services. Connecting the Customer Connected customers are the source of revenue. Cost-effectively connecting customers to the high-speed deep fiber access network is one of the biggest challenges for operators. Ericsson s Deep Fiber Access solution provides a number choices. One choice is a Fiber-To-The-Building (FTTB) architecture for customers living in Multi-dwelling Units (MDUs). In this implementation, a fiber access node is placed centrally within the MDU using Category 5 Ethernet cables to connect to each apartment. Another option is fiber all the way to the end user or a FTTH architecture. In MDUs, the fibers from end users (the drop network) are concentrated to distribution cables with higher fiber counts. This is done in a Fiber Access Terminal (FAT) which is usually placed where the ducts or cables change from indoor to outdoor located in the basement or ground floor of the building or at the curb. For the drop network and distribution network, Ericsson offers traditional fiber cables as well as our air-blown fiber systems Ribbonet and Micronet. Ericsson s Deep Fiber Access solution combines experienced professional services with industry leading passive and active equipment. 4 Connecting the Network The fiber access node serves as a termination point of end user lines on one side and entry point to the Metro Ethernet network on the other. In FTTH deployments, the fiber access node is placed in the Central Office. In FTTB deployments, the fiber access node is typically located centrally within the MDU, such as on the ground floor or in the basement. The reach of CAT5 is about 100 meters, thus, one or more fiber access nodes can easily serve apartments. The Ericsson EDA 1200 P2P solution includes the EFN series of fiber nodes providing a variety of Ethernet ports for 100 and 1000 Mbps carrier-grade services. The EFN series provide standards compliant Quality of Service (QoS), reliability, security, operations, maintenance and provisioning expected in carrier networks for delivering high-speed internet access (HSIA), voice, multi-cast IPTV and Over The Top (OTT) video services. Fiber Access Node EFN324xc for CAT5 Point-to-Point fiber provides the ultimate for virtually unlimited symmetrical bandwidth. 4

5 Simple Smart Scalable The EDA 1200 P2P solution offers a modular pay-as-yougrow architecture allowing simple, cost-effective scalability. The various EDA 1200 EFN, ECN and EDN components can be configured in numerous configurations for FTTH/B/C applications. Installation with ECN430 (top) and EFN324s Network Aggregation For aggregating the traffic in the access network towards the Metro Ethernet network, the EDA 1200 solution includes the ECN series of advanced aggregation switch and controller nodes. The ECN series aggregates the layer 2 traffic from the various EFNs and routes the layer 3 IP-based services. EDA 1200 IP DSLAM with EDN Modules As an example of an EDA 1200 P2P solution, the ECN430 has 20 optical/electrical combo ports with two 10 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks and the EFN324 can service 24 users. By connecting the EFN324 as daisy chained pairs, each ECN430 can aggregate and control up to 40 fiber nodes and 960 users. This allows for a simple and scalable deep fiber access network. Aggregation Switch and Controller Node ECN430 Connecting to Existing Copper For the latest in high-speed HDTV and 3DTV services over existing copper networks, the EDA 1200 P2P solution includes the EDN series of DSL and POTS nodes for providing voice, ADSL2+ and VDSL2 subscriber connectivity. The EDN series are compact and OSP conditioned ideal for Fiber-To-The- Curb (FTTC) applications. The EDN series have also found themselves deployed in FTTB applications turning the existing copper in the building into an ultrahigh-speed link. The modularity of the EDN series allows operators to configure the optimum IP DSLAM size for every application. 5
