HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION EMERGENCY OVERVIEW: WARNING: May cause eye irritation. Inhalation of dust may cause mucous membrane and respiratory irritation. Prolonged overexposure to respirable crystalline silica may cause lung disease (silicosis) and increase the risk of lung cancer. Risk of cancer depends on duration and level of exposure. INGESTION: No adverse effects are expected for normal, incidental ingestion. Large amounts may cause gastrointestinal irritation. CHRONIC EFFECTS: Excessive inhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust may cause a progressive, disabling and sometime fatal lung disease called silicosis. Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, non-specific chest illness and reduced pulmonary function. REPRODUCTIVE HAZARDS: None. CARCINOGENICITY INFORMATION: Crystalline silica quartz is listed as 'Carcinogenic to Humans' Group 1 by IARC and 'Known to be a Human Carcinogen' by NTP. TARGET ORGAN: Overexposure may cause lung damage. MEDICAL CONDITIONS AGRAVATED BY EXPOSURE: Chronic lung scarring leads to progressive massive fibrosis that is often accompanied by increased susceptibility to the risk of impaired health due to a combination of smoking and silica dust exposure. 3.
