1 SS Peter and Paul Newsletter Term 1 2 nd Edition 26 th September 2016 The whole school joined in with the celebrations for Roald Dahl Day which marked 100 years since his birth. The children looked fantastic in their costumes, thank you for putting so much effort in to the creations. Each class has been studying a particular book from the author and doing lots of cross-curricular actives related to the stories. Year 2 made dream catches inspired by the story of the BFG. Whilst Year 1 learnt to retell the story of George s Marvellous Medicine using talk for writing techniques. Please take a look at the children s work displayed in the hall. Year 6 Camp Year 6 had a very successful camp at Elan Valley. They performed team building activities as well as abseiling, canoeing, kayaking, climbing, high ropes and the leap of faith. The children were wonderful; they worked with different groups and were able to establish new friendships with different children in the class. A Prayer Lord, help me to remember that nothing is going to happen to me that you and I together can t handle. Lord, give me the gift of faith. Amen

2 School Uniform Thank you for your patience waiting for uniform deliveries. I am aware that other schools have similar problems with the suppliers. I have now been assured that the problems have been sorted. If you have a problem please let the office know so that I can take it up with the company. If the problems continue then I will find a new supplier. Birthday Cakes and snacks Sometimes you may wish to bring a birthday cake into school to celebrate a birthday. As we are now a nut free school cakes can only be bought in if they are guaranteed to be nut free. In the case of large cakes they should be cut up before being brought into school and the slices wrapped in napkins. Snacks maybe brought into school as long as they don t have nuts as a listed ingredient. Foundation Stage The children and families from Foundation Stage shared their first school lunch together last week. It is lovely to see how the children have settled into school and the routine of the day. ParentPay We are aware of continuing problems with ParentPay and are trying to resolve them. The new system will reduce the amount of waste in the kitchen but if we

3 can t make it work then we will change the system and remove the ordering meals option. In the meantime I would be grateful if you would order the meals online and report any issues to us. Governor s Forum Letters requesting questions to be discussed at the Governing Body forum will sent out later this week. The forum will be held at 2pm on Tuesday 11 th October. I hope you will be able to attend Results The analysis of the results for 2016 has been received from Bristol City Council. The analysis covers Foundation Stage, KS1 and KS2 results at the end of each key stage. In Foundation Stage we look at achievement in terms of Good Level of Development (GLD). The graph below shows that we have been improving the outcome for our children over the last three years and are now significantly above the Bristol standard. In Year 1 the children are tested on their phonics knowledge. Below is a graph showing our results over the last 4 years. Again we are significantly above the Bristol standard.

4 The KS1 curriculum has changed considerably and standards have been raised so no year on year comparison has been given but the graph shows that the number of children working at and working at greater depth is higher than the Bristol standards. In KS2 the curriculum and standards have also changed. The graph below shows % pupils reaching the expected standard in Reading, Writing and Maths. The comparison this time is against the National Average. The graph shows that a national average of 52% of children reaching the required standard at the end of KS2. At SS Peter and Paul 83% of the children reached the required standard in Reading, Writing and Maths at the end of the keystage, a difference of 31%. Well done to everyone! SS Peter and Paul are able to achieve these results because of the hard work and dedication of the teaching staff and children together with the support from parents and carers. The broad and interesting

5 curriculum is able to engage our learners and give them real life experiences in applying their learning. PTFA Please support our wonderful PTFA in raising funds for the school. We are hoping to redevelop the library and would like to raise around 6,000 this year in order to achieve this. On the 7 th October they will be holding the annual sponsored bounce and on the 14 th October there will be Meet the Parents 2 in the evening, which will be a chance to get to know other parents and enjoy a school disco! Tickets will be on sale shortly. Macmillan Coffee Morning Please join us after Star Assembly on Friday for coffee and cakes to raise money for Macmillan cancer support. Many families are affected by cancer every year and rely on the work that Macmillan do to support them. Scholastic Book Fair The school will be holding the annual book fair next week from Tuesday 4 th October for 4 days. It will run in the morning from 8.30am until 8:50am and after school from 3.30pm until 4.15pm. The book fair is an ideal way to support the school as we get a very generous connission from the books sold which is then used to buy books for the library. This year each class will have a wish list so if you would like to make a donation to your child s class library there will be an opportunity for you to do so.

ABSENCE AND ILLNESS REQUESTS If your child is unwell please telephone school by 9:30am to give a reason why. Please also telephone if for any reason you are going to be late such as a medical appointment. Children should not return to school after illness until they are fully recovered and some illnesses require that your child stay off school for 48 hours. Please check with the office if you are unsure. Requests for leave of absence during term time must be done so in writing on the Request for Authorised Absence form which you will find in the pocket outside the staff room, or please ask in the office. If this is not done all absence will be Unauthorised. All requests for term time absence will be dealt with in accordance with our Attendance Policy which can be found on the website.
