Examples of Physical Disabilities Spinal Cord Injuries Amputees Permanent Orthopaedic Issues Spina Bifida Cerebral Palsy Visual Impairment Various other disabilities, including: Muscular Dystrophy Multiple Sclerosis Arthritis Sport for People with Physical Disabilities Participant Involvement Development and High Performance Continuum Long Term Athlete Development Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Para-Sport Progression Active for Life 1
2 Canadian Statistics In 2001, 12.4% of Canadians reported living with a disability. According to the 2006 PALS, the disability rate for Canada is approximately 14.3%. Less than 3% of Canadians living with a disability are engaged in regular physical activity and sport. Sport for People with Physical Disabilities People with disabilities participate in: High-performance sport Competitive sport Recreational sport Lifetime activities that improve their overall fitness and lifestyle What Inclusion Looks Like Children and Physical Activity Currently only 3% of youth with a disability participate in organized sport, compared to 31% of Canadian children who are ablebodied. Children and Physical Activity 40% of Canadian youth with physical disabilities spend more than 4 hours/day watching TV. 60% of children with disabilities report that they seldom or never play games with friends. Benefits of Active Play An excellent way to increase physical activity levels Associated with healthy brain development. Contributes to the cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being of children and youth. Allows children to conquer their fears, practise adult roles and develop the confidence and resilience needed to deal with life s challenges. 3 Benefits of Active Play Active play settings (e.g., playgrounds) are domains where children with disabilities are often included with their peers, and a setting where inclusion and friendships can be developed. Role of the Frontline Service Provider You can t have a podium full of medalists, without a playground full of kids and you can t have a playground full of kids, if someone doesn t tell them that there s a playground for them to play at. The Value of Sport Enhances the rehabilitation process Optimizes physical functioning Promotes better health; enhances overall well-being Increases social contact and promotes inclusion Improves quality of life Enhances self-esteem, self-confidence, self-image Fun, relaxation, recreation family activity The Value of Sport An opportunity for people with disabilities to participate and be role models for others and to be a more integral part of society. People with disabilities have the same need to achieve. Changing Minds, Changing Lives (CMCL) A program provided through the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) that seeks to increase awareness about the connection between sport for people with physical disabilities and rehabilitation. Our Goal To excite and support people in using physical activity/sport as a vehicle for rehabilitation and reintegration of persons with a physical disability into the community, and onto the playing field. Our Mission Supporting and enriching the lives of individuals and persons affected by cerebral palsy. What is cerebral palsy? CP is a term used to describe a group of disorders affecting body movement and muscle coordination. CP is usually caused when the child is developing in the womb. Movements can be unpredictable, muscles can be stiff or tight and in some cases people can have shaky movements or tremors. CP is not a progressive condition, however there are no cures only therapies. 5

These programs foster a balance between mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well being and aim to increase social interaction, encourage friendship and community building, promote positive self-esteem, and foster self-sufficiency.
