2 i9 Sports Official Youth Basketball Rules Keep in mind that the goal at these age groups is learning and FUN! GENERAL GUIDELINES Divisions Youth (Pre-K and K) Junior (1st Grade 3rd Grade) Senior (4th Grade +) Players and Playing Time Games will be 5 on 5. Game will be stopped half way through each quarter for mandatory substitutions. Each player shall play a minimum of 50% of the total playing time. Players' Equipment i9 Sports will supply each player with an i9 Sports reversible, mesh game jersey. Parents supply dark shorts and sneakers. Mouth guards are optional. Referees There will be 1 (one) referee for each game. Referees should avoid interfering with the course of play but are considered part of the court. Referees should briefly explain all rule infractions to the offending player. More coaching of rules should be provided at the younger ages. The Start of Play The winner of a coin toss at the beginning of the game will get possession. The opposite team will start with possession in the second half. Teams will switch baskets at half time and a coin toss will determine possession for each overtime period (playoff games only). Game Duration Youth Division Scrimmages (score not kept) with 8 minute running quarters (and extra 10 minutes for practice each week). Junior and Senior Divisions - Games (score kept) with 10 minute quarters. The clock will run continuously with the exception of time outs, foul shots, turnovers during the last minute of each quarter and halfway through each quarter (mandatory substitutions). 1 minute between quarters. 3 minute halftime. 3 Over Time There will be no overtime in regular season. Playoff overtime will be 5 minute periods as needed. Offense All Divisions The general backcourt violation rule (half court line) will not be enforced. Defense All Divisions No defense in the back court (Senior Division) or past foul line (Youth and Junior Divisions). Teams may play half zone or man to man defense. Illegal defense - Called if a team loses possession of the ball as a result of a defensive act taking place in a restricted area; but the turnover will be legal if it is an error initiated by the offensive team and defense was not being applied in the restricted area of the court. (Official s Discretion) Youth Division no stealing dribbles (only blocking passes and shots) as this will allow for more organized offenses. Playoffs For Junior and Senior Divisions, each team will play one playoff game with the highest seeded team playing the second seeded team, the third seeded team playing the fourth seeded team and so on. (Youth division will scrimmage.) Tiebreakers for Playoff Seeds will be in the following order: 1. Head to Head Competition 2. Point Differential - points scored minus points allowed for the season (maximum of 15 points per game) 3. Total Points Allowed 4. Coin Flip FOULS Personal fouls: Personal fouls include any type of illegal physical contact: Hitting Pushing Slapping Holding Illegal pick/screen -- When an offensive player sticks out a limb and makes physical contact with a defender in an attempt to block the path of the defender. i9 Sports an Experience Beyond the Game! 3

4 Personal foul penalties: Foul Shots. If a player is fouled while shooting, then he or she gets two free throws if the shot did go in but only one free throw if the shot did not go in. Inbounds. If fouled while not shooting, the ball is given to the team the foul was committed upon. They get the ball at the nearest side or baseline, out of bounds, and have 5 seconds to pass the ball onto the court. Personal and team fouls will not be counted (no child will foul out and no automatic shots for committing a certain number of team fouls). Charging - An offensive foul that is committed when a player pushes or runs over a defensive player. The ball is given to the team that the foul was committed upon. Blocking - Blocking is illegal personal contact resulting from a defender not establishing position in time to prevent an opponent's drive to the basket. VIOLATIONS Walking/Traveling - Taking more than 'a step and a half' without dribbling the ball is traveling. Moving your pivot foot once you've stopped dribbling is traveling. Carrying - When a player dribbles the ball with his hand too far to the side of or, sometimes, even under the ball. Double Dribble - Dribbling the ball with both hands on the ball at the same time or picking up the dribble and then dribbling again is a double dribble. Held ball - Occasionally, two or more opposing players will gain possession of the ball at the same time. In order to avoid a prolonged and/or violent tussle, the referee stops the action and awards the ball to one team or the other on a rotating basis. Time restrictions - A player passing the ball inbounds has five seconds to pass the ball. If he does not, then the ball is awarded to the other team. Forfeit Games must start with at least four players per team. Any team that cannot field four players within five minutes of the scheduled start time shall forfeit the game. 5 FLEXIBLE RULES FOR YOUNGER DIVISIONS Games at the younger age groups should be officiated more loosely with emphasis placed on instruction; foul lines may be moved up and the violations listed above should be very flexible to promote offense and scoring. and the most important rule of all...
