3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? Eagle's Nest Elementary is located at 5353 Metrowest Blvd, Orlando, FL in Southwest Orange County and serves the communities on North Kirkman Road and Carver Shores. Eagle's Nest Elementary has an enrollment of 734 students along with a minority rate of 97% as of May The enrollment and minority rate have remained relatively the same for the past three years. A unique feature of Eagle's Nest is that we are a small community school with the majority of our students living within a 2 mile radius. We have a high participation rate for our monthly parental involvement events. Challenges for Eagle's Nest include the high mobility rate and poverty level. The student ethnicity demographics are as follows: - 5 students are Asian/Pacific Islander for.7 percent students are Black for 76 percent students are Hispanic for 19.5 percent - 5 students are Multiracial for.7 percent - 23 students are White for 3.1 percent The staff ethnicity demographics are as follows: - 3 staff members are Asian/Pacific Islander for 4 percent - 34 staff members are Black for 45.9 percent - 10 staff members are Hispanic for 13.5 percent - 3 staff members are American Indian/Alaskan Native for 4 percent - 24 staff members are White for 32.4 percent Page 2

School's Purpose Eagle's Nest Elementary School aligns its vision, mission, and goals to that of Orange County Public Schools. Sustained Community Engagement Teachers use weekly newsletters in order to maintain constant contact and bridge the gap between home and school. Our Positive Behavior System (PBS) newsletter provides parents with helpful hints on successfully supporting their children. The continued support between faculty and parents ensures positive relationships. Our monthly parental involvement events build positive relationships, communicate the school's mission and values, and keeps parents informed of their child's progress. These events include, but are not limited to: Open House, Fall Conference, Math/Science Night, Turkey/Gingerbread Parade, Literacy Night, Florida State Assessment (FSA)/End of Course Exam (EOC) Information Night, Black History Celebration, Movie Nights, Talent Show & Celebrate the Arts Night. To ensure a safety of all students, there are clear systems implemented for arrival and dismissal with adult supervision at all times. Safety procedures are in place for all circumstances ie: code red, fire, severe weather. A uniform security officer is available to anyone entering the school which in turn provides safety and security. Having a staff and leadership team that is visible and available allows for students and parents to feel valued, appreciated, and respected. This fosters an environment where students participate and contribute to the learning environment. Cafeteria systems are in place and staff members are assigned duties to ensure safety for all students. Staff members use of radios for continuous communication. Students use hall passes and a buddy system when leaving the classroom. Teachers utilize a warning system on classroom doors in order to alert for safety or threat. Our behavioral system is used school wide and extends into the classrooms. All classroom teachers follow a system of colors ranging from purple to red. Teachers reward points each day based on the color earned. Utilizing a color system and defining clear expectations at the onset of school will help to minimize distractions and keep students engaged during instruction. The PBS team has established clear protocols for students that need disciplinary action. A tiered system helps teachers to determine the intervention necessary to deescalate situations that may arise. Members of our Exceptional Student Education (ESE) team are Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) trained if further assistance is needed to ensure safety. Eagle's Nest uses a variety of intervention strategies to improve the academic performance of students identified by the early warning system. In order to support attendance, students have the opportunity to be a part of the Walking School Bus. In this program, adults walk a group of students to and from school in order to ensure student safety. Eagle's Nest also offers free breakfast, lunch, and snacks to our Page 3

6 students. We have adopted the fruit and vegetable program, which enables our students to receive fruits and vegetable snacks multiple times per week. In order to support behavior and minimize suspensions, Eagle's Nest has adopted the Positive Behavior System as a school wide behavior program. We have also implemented the "Caught Being Cool" program. In this program, students have the opportunity to be recognized for their actions at a school-wide level. Teachers have the opportunity to request support from the leadership team by using the Behavior Support Request form. This enables staff members to collaborate with the goal of meeting the behavioral needs of specific students. Finally, we implemented Positive Alternative to School Suspension (PASS) as another intervention strategy to support student behavior. Page 4

7 Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. Eagle's Nest Elementary School earned a "C" school rating in the school year receiving 438 points. This was up from the previous school year where technically the school earned an "F" rating but due to state safeguards the school received a "C" rating. This improvement was due to a relentless focus on reading and math instruction which was driven by assessment data throughout the school year. Teachers worked in professional learning communities (PLCs) to review and disaggregate data making shifts to their instruction in order to meet the needs of the students. For the school year, Eagle's Nest Elementary School showed significant growth in math scores with an eight percent increase of our students scoring a level 3 or higher from 39 percent to 47 percent. In addition, the students making learning gains in math increased 28 percentage points from 43 percent to 71 percent. Our lowest 25 percent making learning gains in math increased 33 percentage points from 38 percent to 71 percent. The students also showed significant growth in writing with a 23 percent increase from 32 percent to 55 percent. Overall, the proficiency level with reading scores maintained at 38 percent and the school had a slight increase of one percent of the lowest 25 percent making learning gains in reading. During the current school year, the Eagle's Nest Elementary School staff worked diligently to differentiate instruction using a data-driven approach to meet the diverse needs of our students. Teachers administered weekly formative assessments to track students' growth based on specific standards-based learning targets. Students who were performing below grade level proficiency received intervention specific to each student's needs. These students were progress monitored on a bi-weekly basis and students were placed in groups that were fluid throughout the school year based on those needs. The school implemented an additional hour reading block at the end of each day and used this time to assist students having difficulty attaining proficiency or advanced levels on state assessments. In addition, teachers worked with grade level teams bi-weekly to review, discuss, and take action on current student data. Classroom instruction was modified based on the student data. Eagle's Nest Elementary School will continue to work to reduce the achievement gap within our subgroup categories, specifically working with the subgroups Students with Disabilities (SWD), and English Language Learners (ELL). To assist in increasing proficiency levels for all students, an implementation of tier 2 supports for students in both Reading and Math will be built into the master schedule. The school will ensure that our ESE resource teachers will support students by meeting the needs of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and following plans to fidelity. The teachers will use specialized instruction to support student success with their goals. Imagine Learning will be utilized specifically to support our ELL students. In addition, two ELL para-professionals support classroom instruction working specifically with targeted. Page 5

8 Additional Information Provide any additional information you would like to share with the public and community that were not prompted in the previous sections. The Eagle's Nest Elementary School literacy team developed a plan this year to increase the number of students meeting grade level expectations and proficiency standards. The focus of the team was to increase readership of non-fiction and complex text. Eagle's Nest Accelerated Reader (AR) program is a school wide initiative to promote and celebrate independent reading. The Eagle Book Challenge partners with AR to promote non-fiction literacy and comprehension. Eagle's Nest participated in the Title I Extended Media program to provide additional opportunities for our K, 1 and 2 students to interact with text. The 3, 4 and 5 students who were below proficiency level in math, writing and/or science were invited to participate in year-long after school tutoring program, three days a week. Other literacy events included an oration and the "Battle of the Books" contests, both of which involved students competing at the district level. Page 6
