1 This is a game for 2 players. The children will need a game board, a dice and a counter or marker each. The game is very much like snakes and ladders, with the objective being to travel along the board from square 1 to the final square. The snakes and ladders however are replaced by the children's knowledge and their times tables, and their mathematical skills. For example: on the Threes and Eights board players who land on a number in the 3x table must move their counter back 2 spaces. If they land on a number they recognise as being in the 8x table they can move forward 1 space. Should they land on a number which they know to be in both the 3x and 8x tables then they move forwards 5 spaces. When first playing the game it can be simplified by allowing the children to colour in squares of the relevant times tables. However, we have found that children gain more from the activity if they have to discover strategies for counting and calculating the numbers in each multiplication sequence. The repeated calculation helps imprint the number pattern since the children are not simply relying on the visual clues on the game board.
