It provides opportunities for innovative companies to engage with the public sector to solve specific problems SBIR enables the public sector to engage with industry during the early stages of development, supporting projects through the stages of feasibility and prototyping

12 Healthcare Initiatives SBIR in NHS Midlands & East Funding 5m initial funding secured from NHS Midlands & East, ERDF, East of England Development Agency & TSB Competition focused on: Ideas to accurately diagnose asthma in Children Development contract went to company that had developed technology for race horses Eykona 3D digital imaging camera will enable wounds to be more effectively monitored, allowing adaptive treatment regions and fewer hospital visits Start up company added 10 new jobs in 2 years as a result of UK & International Sales

13 How do we measure success Metrics to measure success Public Authority Solution to challenge, efficiencies, savings Company Develop product, sell to other targets, grow sales and employment Economy Reduction in costs, increasing efficiencies in P.S and increased prosperity from increased tax revenues from company sales, exports and jobs. Industrial policy & public procurement policy coming together SBIR in other countries is a proven catalyst for job creation Reference sites are used to generate export opportunities supported by EI and attract foreign investment with IDA Ireland
