2 Horizons for Homeless Children seeks applications and nominations for the position of Chief Development and Marketing Officer. About Horizons for Homeless Children For 25 years Horizons for Homeless Children has been the only organization in Massachusetts focused exclusively on the needs of homeless children and their families. Horizons mission is to improve the lives of young homeless children and help their families succeed by providing high-quality education, opportunities for play, and comprehensive family engagement programs. Recognized as a national leader in the education of homeless children, Horizons also advocates on behalf of young children, trains educators and human service providers, and provides research on the impact of early education on homeless children. In the United States, 1 in 30 children is homeless each year. These 2.5 million children often experience chronic stress and trauma from the loss of relationships, multiple moves and exposure to domestic violence, among other traumas often associated with homelessness. Homeless children are two times more likely to have learning disabilities and three times more likely to have emotional and behavioral problems. Research, as well as the success of Horizons programs, has shown that early education reduces the effects of this trauma and helps to ensure children s future school and life success. Horizons is a $9.9 million operating organization that serves approximately 2,000 homeless children and their families each week in its Early Education Centers and Playspaces throughout the state of Massachusetts. The Playspace Programs were founded in 1990 with the belief that play is a vital component of a child's development. The programs ensure that children living in family homeless shelters in Massachusetts have the opportunity for developmentally appropriate play. The 150 Playspaces across the state are staffed by more than 1,500 trained volunteers known as Playspace Activity Leaders (PALs), one of the largest volunteer networks in the Commonwealth. Horizons three early education centers, known as Community Children s Centers, first launched in 1994, deliver high quality teaching to 175 children weekly and also provide family engagement programs. The centers take an individualized, developmental approach to early education and strive to provide the creative curriculum and care most likely to help each child enter school with the skills to thrive academically and socially. Horizons has embarked on a new Research and Evaluation program to measure the impact of early education on homeless children. This information will impact Horizons and countless national associates around program design, advocacy and policy functions. In 2013, Horizons partnered with the Early 2

3 Education Coalition and successfully advocated for a $26.5 million increase in the state budget for early education, the first increase in such funding since Horizons has recruited highly skilled and experienced leaders to head its flagship Playspace and Early Education programs. It has also invested in a rebranding initiative and completed a formal assessment of its fundraising program and opportunity. About Philanthropy at Horizons for Homeless Children The Chief Development and Marketing Officer (CDMO) will join a talented and diverse leadership team committed to changing outcomes for homeless children. The team works according to a proven framework to serve 2,000 children in Massachusetts per week, by providing high-quality early education, opportunities for play, and comprehensive family support services. As state and federal funding has been reduced, the need for philanthropy has increased. Powered by an engaged and strategic 35-member board, Horizons is well positioned to act on its strategic priorities which include strengthening its programs, capacity and financial sustainability. About the Position The Chief Development and Marketing Officer will serve as an integral member of the senior leadership team, reporting to the CEO. S/he will partner with the CEO and members of the Board of Directors to chart Horizons next phase of strategic and philanthropic growth, including a capital building project to house its expanding programs. The CDMO will be responsible for actively engaging in the cultivation and solicitation of top donors, growing and leveraging the potential for significant gifts, and developing strategies and systems to secure and grow revenue. S/he will manage a comprehensive fundraising team of 10 professional staff members whose responsibilities include annual giving, major gifts, corporate and foundation giving, events, marketing and operations. The successful Chief Development and Marketing Officer will be an innovative leader, who brings vision, comprehensive development experience and positivity to this growing organization. Presence, passion and alignment with mission, will be key attributes to serve as an effective ambassador and compelling spokesperson for Horizons. 3

4 Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership Partner with the CEO and Board of Directors to conceptualize and implement both near-term and long-term strategic plans for a sustainable program for philanthropy, including a capital campaign. Guide and mobilize the CEO and Board of Directors as funding influencers, drawing out their individual abilities to be fundraising assets and engage with external investors. Create initiatives to expand Horizons prospect pipeline and revenue streams by accessing and optimizing new and existing networks. In keeping with its mission, educate and develop talent and skills within the organization that position Horizons for Homeless Children for philanthropic success. Develop a department-wide plan of work that will optimize new and current funding opportunities. Development and Marketing Actively manage a select portfolio of Horizons highest net worth individuals including members of the Board of Directors, key advisors and stakeholders. Lead and motivate a newly structured development and marketing team, managing all members to meet individual fundraising and professional development goals. Develop and maintain systems and processes to monitor high level detail relating to donor research, cycles, projections and outcomes. Define and execute a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy to build awareness and establish Horizons as a leading Boston based philanthropy to potential and existing corporate and individual prospect and current donors. Oversee an integrated and innovative marketing strategy to engage current and potential donors. Partner with senior colleagues and team leaders to ensure consistent application of the new brand strategy in all donor and prospect communications, including event management, proposal submission, and presentations. Ensure timely delivery of impact and financial reports to partners and funders Key Qualifications Strong passion for Horizon s mission to improve the lives of young homeless children. Minimum 10 years of progressive development experience, including strategic direction, team leadership, and board relations. Established track record in leading all aspects of a capital campaign from planning through completion. Demonstrated success building philanthropic relationships and/or revenue partnerships at 6- and 7- figure levels Experience leveraging corporate, foundation, institutional and government relationships to access new sources of support Demonstrated success in setting and executing a best in practice, comprehensive fundraising strategy that includes marketing. Working knowledge of capital campaign strategy, planning and implementation. Strong management skills that include the ability to motivate, influence, and hold staff accountable to high standards and goals. 4
