3 1 Introduction The Care Inspectorate regulates care services in Scotland. Information about all care services is available on our website at This service was registered with the Care Inspectorate on 9 February Requirements and recommendations If we are concerned about some aspect of a service, or think it could do more to improve, we may make a recommendation or requirement. - A recommendation is a statement that sets out actions the care service provider should take to improve or develop the quality of the service, but where failure to do so will not directly result in enforcement. Recommendations are based on the National Care Standards, relevant codes of practice and recognised good practice. - A requirement is a statement which sets out what is required of a care service to comply with the Public Services Reform (Scotland) Act 2010 and Regulations or Orders made under the Act or a condition of registration. Where there are breaches of Regulations, Orders or Conditions, a requirement must be made. Requirements are legally enforceable at the discretion of the Care Inspectorate. The service is registered; To provide a care service to a maximum of six children at any one time under the age of 16, of whom no more than three are not yet attending primary school and of whom no more than one is under 12 months. The numbers are inclusive of the childminder's own family. Any other conditions unique to the service: 2. Minded children cannot be cared for by persons other than those named on the certificate. 3. 4 What we did during our inspection We wrote this report after an announced (short notice) inspection took place on Wednesday 17 August 2016 between 9.30am and 11.50am. During this inspection process we looked around the areas of the childminder's home used by minded children and gathered evidence from: - The childminder's annual return. - Information gathered about children. - Training records - A range of policies and procedures - Training certificates - Interaction between the childminder and children. - Observation of the environment Views of people using the service Two children were present during the inspection. They had settled well into the service and happy in the care of Mrs Thomas. The children chose what they wanted to do and enjoyed playing with play-doh, drawing, being outside and dressing up. We received one questionnaires from parents. They were satisfied with the service provided stating that; Self assessment Every year all care services complete a 'self assessment' telling us how their service is performing. We check to make sure this is accurate. We did not receive a self assessment before this inspection. What the service did well Mrs Thomson has only recently started childminding. She has a very good understanding of children's development and has quickly developed positive relationships with the children in her care. page 4 of 11

5 What the service could do better Mrs Thomson will develop personal plans for children. She will also consider what systems she needs to put in place to further develop her service. For example consultation with children and parents, review and update records such as risk assessments and how she keeps up to date with current best practice. 2 The grades we awarded We grade the quality of care and support, the quality of the environment and the quality of management and leadership. If the childminder employs an assistant, we also grade the quality of staffing. In each case, we award a grade on a scale from 1 to 6, where 1 is unsatisfactory and 6 is excellent. Quality of care and support Quality of environment Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership 4 - Good 4 - Good not assessed 4 - Good 3 Quality of care and support Findings from the inspection The childminder had developed very good relationships with the children who had started using her service. We saw that the kind, supportive and positive interactions supported children in what they were doing and acknowledged their achievements. Children, therefore experienced being respected and valued. The childminder recognised the importance of gathering information about children and described how she used the initial visit with parents to do this. Through discussion the childminder demonstrated a sound knowledge of child development and strategies that could be used to support children. For example, helping them with language development. She will now develop personal plans which will show how children are being supported with their individual needs. See recommendation 1. page 5 of 11

6 The childminder talked to parents every day about their children. This enabled them to share information, make plans for children's care and make any changes to the placement. For example adjusting routines for children started nursery. The childminder had a very good understanding about providing healthy lifestyles for children. They had access to outdoor play every day whether in the garden or in the local community. Very good use was made of parks and soft play which let children have access to fresh air and exercise which promoted their well-being. Through discussion the childminder demonstrated a good understanding of changing the pace of the day to meet children's needs. For example ensuring they had a quiet time if they needed it. They should show: - children's and parents input into the plans. - any strategies in place to support children. - that plans are reviewed at least 6 monthly. 7 4 Quality of environment Findings from the inspection The childminder provided a welcoming and homely environment for children. We saw that they areas children used were maintained to a high standard which ensured that children could play safely. Space was used well and enabled children to be involved in a range of activities from drawing at the table, playing with larger equipment on the floor, going outdoors and dressing up. Parents told us that the childminder made very good use of community resources. They said their children enjoyed walking the dog and going to the local park. Risk assessments were in place which helped children enjoy outing safely. The childminder checked the areas for childminding on a daily basis to ensure they were safe for children. We talked to the childminder about reviewing risk assessments for the environment and noting any changes that were needed. The back garden had recently been refurbished and offered a children a safe place to play. They could use wheeled toys on the slabbed area, play on the grass and look after the plants. A particular favourite at the moment was eating their snack and lunch outdoors. All toys and resources available were in a good state of repair and suitable for the children to use. They knew what was available and could ask for anything they wanted to play with. 8 5 Quality of staffing We only assess this where the childminder employs an assistant. 6 Quality of management and leadership Findings from the inspection The childminder had only been childminding for a short time so is still in the process of introducing systems that will help develop and establish her service. She had used her settling in procedure well to get to know families and share information about her service. The childminder was aware of national initiatives such as GIRFEC and best practice guidance that she would use to help develop her service. The childminder was committed to keeping up to date with childcare issues and did this through the reading the Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA) magazine, research and attending training. We advised the childminder to keep a record of any research or reading she does and how it was use to improve her service. Children were involved in choosing what activities they wanted to do. We saw they made suggestions about what they wanted to do. This included dressing up, playing outside and drawing. The childminder had written aims and objectives for her service and a range of policies and procedures to support her work. These were shared with parents so they knew what to expect from the service. As the service becomes established they will be reviewed, updated and added to when needed. The childminder was committed to working in partnership with parents and would continue to build on the relationships she had started to make. We talked with the childminder about developing ways that she could use to gather the views of parents and children about the service. This is an area she will further develop.
