Children in K6 took an interest in animals, especially those in zoos. We began exploring different animals, making sketches, reading books and creating animals out of clay for our own model zoo in the classroom. We read Corduroy a story of a teddy bear in a toy store who was missing a button and only wanted to be loved by a little girl or boy. The children loved this story so we started learning about teddy bears, and sorted and measured our teddy bears we brought from home!

After learning more about animals, the students took a stronger interest in bears, especially after reading the stories about Corduroy. We started to talk about the differences between real bears vs. teddy bears. We made a Venn Diagram to see which things they had in common and which things were different. One student said that you can only hug teddy bears, and this caused a big discussion. Many children were saying that you can hug both real bears and teddy bears, and others were arguing that no, you can only hug teddy bears. Here's what they were saying: Daniela: Yes you can hug them, if you hug them from the back. Natalia: Hacerle cariños a uno de verdad. Camila: Si puedes, si le dices que no te vamos a lastimar. Emiliano: No, because if you hold his hands, he can still scratch you. Carlos: No, porque si le dices hola ellos no habla en tu idioma, y te persigue y te lastima. Valeria -No, The bear can scratch you very hard if you get it by his legs. Carlos: El oso es salvaje tiene unas y te rasguña, no es como un teddy bear. Eric Carle s Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear book got us started learning about Polar Bears. Children brought books and magazines from home, and we checked out books from the library. We also watched videos on Polar Bears to see them in their natural habitat.

We were reading a national geographic magazine during our story time, as it had a bunch of information on polar bears. The students learned that polar bears need to be fat to keep them warm and that their paws can be as big as 12 inches in width. After reading this fact about the paw, the children didn't understand how big that was. We measured 12 inches on the board and then drew a bear paw around it. The paw was enormous! We tried to figure out how many children's hands would fit in one polar bear paw, 13! We had the chance to feel how polar bears stay warm, testing with lard and ice. Children realized their hand covered in lard didn t get cold when touching ice while their other hand was freezing! Other facts were written and glued onto our life size polar bear outside.

We measured the panda bear and realized the Giant Panda Bear can be as big as 6 feet tall! The children were saying how cute and cuddly the panda bear looks, but soon learned that they can be very dangerous. We read a story about baby panda bears, and discovered that the babies are born the size of a stick of butter, are blind and pink with no fur!

As we started learning about panda bears, the children were discussing the different habitats where bears live. Since we already had our polar bear taped up outside, they decided it would be really cool to make snowballs and snowflakes to hang around the polar bear to make it look like he was in the arctic. They then started brainstorming on ideas to enhance our bear display and thought that we could make bamboo out of old toilet paper and paper towel rolls. We were creating different bear habitats and decided to look on the internet for information about how big a koala bear is. The children were anxious to measure and start learning about koala bears. However, we soon found out that koala bears really aren't bears at all, they are marsupials! Some children had already created koala bears out of clay for our habitat so we didn't know what to do! Do we take away the koala bears and not learn about them? Do we continue to learn about koala bears even though they're not really bears? The children had worked really hard in constructing the koala bear habitat and individual koala bears so we really didn't want to destroy their hard work. We took this discussion to the carpet and here's our conversation: Miss Kerry: What should we do? Koala Bears aren't bears! Pablo: What if we put a sign that says "We are not bears". Carlos: But if we put a sign it will look like a toy. Natalia: Why don't we turn them into a different type of gray bear?

Carlos: We can take apart their body and make them gray bears. Jared: We can just take them out. Miss Kerry: We have 4 different habitats for each bear, forest for brown and black bear, arctic for polar bears, jungle for panda bears and woodlands for koala bears. Natalia: Take out the koala bears and separate the brown and black bears. We can keep the koala bear for another time. Camilo: But then it will be a zoo. Miss Kerry: Should we still learn about Koala Bears even though they are not bears? Students: YES! Camila: Let's put a sign. Sebastian: What if we take out the koala bears and put penguins? Carlos: Put the Koala Bears somewhere else. We can make the area of the koala bears into a place where children come to look at the animals. Naomi: But it's not a zoo, children go to the zoo. Carlos: No not a zoo, like a safari with a Jeep for people to ride and look at the animals. Students: Ooh, like a safari! Teacher: So we keep the koala bears in a separate habitat away from the bears and turn the other area into a place for a safari? Students: Yes!

We learned that some bears hibernate in the winter to save energy and stay out of the cold. In the winter there is not a lot of food for them to eat, so they go to sleep for sometimes up to 6 months! The children practiced being bears and practiced hibernating. When they heard the music, that meant the snow was coming and it was time to find a place to hibernate! When the music stopped, they could check and see if the snow was melted. Once they were sure, they went to find food because they were VERY hungry!
