2 Welcome to phonics At Star primary it is our aim to ensure children are competent and confident readers and writers by the time they leave year 6. We begin this process from nursery through the rigorous teaching of phonics! Phonics is the first step in supporting your child to read and write. During our daily phonic lessons children are taught to listen, look and distinguish between the different sounds. This provides children with the vital decoding skills required to read! At home, when reading with your child, ask them to use their phonics to help read new words. What is Letters and Sounds? Letters & Sounds is a government programme for teaching phonics and high frequency words. It is split into 6 phases which are taught across Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. J Phase 1 Nursery / Reception J Phase 2 Reception J Phase 3 Reception J Phase 4 Year 1 J Phase 5 Year 1 J Phase 6 Year 2 2 3
3 How to practise phonics at home What is blending? For reading (decoding) say the sounds left to right of the word and blend the sounds to hear the whole word! ALWAYS SAY THE BLENDED WORD! Some examples Z-e-b-r-a Zebra L S-n-ai-l L Snail Ch-i-m-p-a-n-z-ee L [ [ Chimpanzee [ How do I blend? Point under each letter or letter group as you say the sound, then run your finger under the whole word as you say the whole word. Phase 1 Phase 1 focuses on rhythm, rhyme, speaking and listening skills. It includes singing lots of nursery rhymes, playing listening games and using musical instruments. Things to try at home J Play games like I spy. J Sing songs and rhymes together. J Share lots of books! 4 5
4 Phase 2 Phase 3 Children learn 24 NEW sounds in phase 2. s a t p i n Phase 3 builds on phase 2. Children learn 26 more sounds and 12 more tricky words! Including some where the same letters can make different sounds e.g. oo - book, loop. m d g o c k j v zz qu ai ee or ur ck e u r h b f ff l ll ss w y he x z ch th she sh ng igh oo oa ar ow ear ure oi air er we me They should be able to blend CVC words. 5 Phase 4 Phase 5 In Phase 4, children consolidate their phoneme knowledge from Phase 3 and begin to blend and spell polysyllabic words (eg shampoo; chimpanzee). ay ie ou ea ue wh aw ph au ey u-e a-e e-e The children should now be able to spell the Phase 3 words. oy ir ew oe i-e o-e During Phase 4, sounds with adjacent consonants or initial and final blends are taught e.g. bl, dr, sc, ft, ct (eg soft, act). These can be sounded out by recognising them quickly which makes for a stronger reader. There are 14 more tricky words to learn by sight! There are 19 more sounds to learn! They should be writing them too! 10 11
7 Phase 6 In Phase 6, the focus is on learning spelling rules for word endings or suffixes. They learn how words change when you add certain letters. There are 12 different suffixes taught. -s -es -ing -ed -er -est -y -ness -ful -ly -ment -en safe safest buzz safer safely buzzes Children should also continue to practise applying the sounds learnt to their reading and writing! They should be known before the children go into key stage 2! Useful websites Below is a list of websites that can support you and your child with letters and sounds!
