2 General Study Plan Medical Science Frm 1 July 2007, students admitted t the Faculty f Health Sciences (HU) will be ffered ne pstgraduate studies discipline nly: Medical Science. All pstgraduate students accepted frm this date nwards will therefre fllw the same General Study Plan. In rder t be able t defend their dctral dissertatins, pstgraduate students at HU will need t achieve a curse target equivalent t nt less than 33 credits (38 credits fr certain research students) fr a dctrate and nt less than 18 credits fr a licentiate degree (23 credits fr certain research students). Pstgraduate students at HU are trained in research, develpment wrk and ther prblem slving within the higher educatin, private and public sectrs. HU ffers qualitatively excellent masters and pstgraduate curses designed t prduce graduates and PhDs f a very high internatinal standard Admissin, qualificatin requirements and selectin fr acceptance nt pstgraduate level curses Accrding t the Higher Educatin Ordinance, the Faculty Bard is respnsible fr admissin t curses at pstgraduate level. At HU this task is delegated t FUN. 2 Preparatin fr admissins is made by the respective departments. FUN is the deciding bdy regarding admissin; it bases it decisins n thse f the respective department bards. The fllwing is required fr admissin t a pstgraduate curse at HU: basic and specific qualificatins the applicant is assessed t be capable f cmpleting the curse successfully an individual study plan (where apprpriate 3 apprved by an peratins manager r equivalent) including a funding plan at least tw prpsed tutrs, f which ne is named as principal tutr cmpletin f an admissins seminar In evaluating an applicatin, the bard f the department has t assess whether candidates are able t dedicate sufficient time t their studies such that these can be cmpleted within eight years in the case f a dctrate and fur years in the case f a licentiate degree. 4 As a pstgraduate student, emplyment must nt exceed the crrespnding time required fr a full-time pstgraduate level curse f fur years fr a dctrate. 5 This is cnfirmed by the tutrs and, as apprpriate, the peratins manager r equivalent when adpting and during the yearly fllw-up f the individual study plan. 3 T be admitted t HU as a pstgraduate student, candidates must pssess basic and specific qualificatins and be assessed t be capable f cmpleting the curse successfully. Specific qualificatins include prficiency in English equivalent t an apprved TOEFL test r having cmpleted an admissins seminar in English. Selectin criteria fr applicants are: capacity t cmplete a curse at pstgraduate level successfully Decisin n acceptance nt a pstgraduate curse: On cmpletin f the admissins seminar and prvisin f the individual study plan (see Individual study plan), the bard f the department decides t supprt r nt supprt admissin t the dctral studies place. FUN then decides upn admissin. Decisin n acceptance nt a licentiate degree curse: Acceptance nt a pstgraduate curse with a licentiate degree entails that this degree is the final gal f the pst graduate study. Admissin t pst graduate study with licentiate degree as the gal is in principle nly pssible when a permanently emplyed prfessinal persn requests cmpetence develpment and further study within their subject/prfessin. As the pstgraduate studies place is then tied t a prfessinal psitin, the place need nt be advertised. The prpsal fr the establishment f the pstgraduate studies place, including infrmatin n the intended hlder is established by the department in questin and shall then be apprved by FUN; the department then decides, in custmary fashin, n the admissin. Fr pstgraduate students applying fr dctral studies places as frm 1 January 2009, the fllwing applies: At lease half f the sub wrks included in the dctral dissertatin must be published/accepted fr publicatin fllwing admissin t pstgraduate study The sub wrks that shall be included in the dctral dissertatin may be published, at the mst, five years prir t admissin fr pstgraduate study. Pst graduate students shall, at the latest, during the term f their public defence have been registered dctral students with a degree f activity crrespnding t three years full-time study. Please nte hwever the fllwing cases: 1. Anyne wishing t be admitted t a PhD curse where, accrding t the individual study plan earlier pstgraduate studies in Sweden r elsewhere are t be credited, is t be registered and actively engaged in pstgraduate study at HU fr a perid crrespnding t nt less than tw years full-time study befre applying t defend their dissertatin. The department in questin establishes the pstgraduate studies place; advertising is, hwever, nt necessary Pstgraduate students admitted nt a licentiate degree curse will cmplete their studies with this degree. On cmpletin f a licentiate degree, the individual cncerned can apply fr admissin t subsequent pstgraduate studies leading t a PhD. Hwever, in such cases, the same terms and cnditins apply as fr new admissins t pstgraduate studies fr a PhD. Cntent and structure f pstgraduate studies Pstgraduate study entails fur years (tw years fr a licentiate degree) full-time study after taking a degree at advanced level r cmpleted curse requirements f nt less than 240 credits, including nt less than 60 credits at advanced level. Fr a PhD, the pstgraduate student is t have had a scientific dissertatin (dctral dissertatin) f nt less than 120 credits apprved. Fr a licentiate degree, the pstgraduate student is t have had a scientific dissertatin f nt less than 60 credits apprved. Basic general science curses passed make up nt less than 18 cr (11 cr fr licentiate degree), with a maximum 5 cr frm any ne subject. 5 Scientific methdlgy, 5 cr Biethics and research ethics, 3 cr Scientific cmmunicatin and infrmatin retrieval, 3 cr Basic bistatistics, 5 cr Multivariate statistics, 5 cr Epidemilgy, 5 cr Gd Clinical Practice (GCP), 2 cr Gd Labratry Practice (GLP), 2 cr Mandatry curses fr certain pstgraduate students Pstgraduate students wh are t use labratry animals are t have passed the applicable curse n later than tw years after starting their wrk. 9 Labratry animal science, 5 cr 2.2 Other pstgraduate study curses Other pstgraduate study curses: min 9 cr fr PhD (4 cr fr licentiate degree) Apprved participatin in and examinatin passed in subject-specific curses at pstgraduate level in which the pstgraduate student needs t acquire adequate knwledge, such as set ut in the individual curse plan r annual review f the pstgraduate studies. These curses are t be apprved by FUN r in the case f external curses, credited by FUS. Apprved participatin in elements in department wide research study prgrammes with clear credit specificatins, such as research institutes. Other adequate curses, including apprved clinical specialist curses (SK curses) that clearly have direct relevance t the research prject in the individual study plan (max 5 cr in ttal). 2.3 Other credit giving elements Other credit generating elements: min 6 cr fr PhD (3 cr fr licentiate degree) Participatin in internatinal cnferences with a presentatin by the candidate, such as pstings r lectures (max 2 cr per cnference, max 3 cr in ttal). Time spent with a research grup at anther university (gives 1.5 cr per week, max 3 cr in ttal). Participatin in a series f seminars, jurnal clubs etc. at the department (1-2 cr per term depending n intensity, t amunt t min 3 cr r max 4.5 cr in ttal). 2.4 Dissertatin (scientific paper) T be awarded a degree, a pstgraduate student is t have had a scientific paper wrth nt less than 120 credits r 60 credits (licentiate degree) apprved. 9 Central Research Cmmissin prclamatin (SJVFS 1992:11) with directives and general advice n training requirements when using animals fr scientific purpses etc (L 32). 5 (8)

6 Dctral dissertatin Mst dissertatins at HU are cmpilatin dissertatins based n a number f sub wrks. Such sub wrks are t be set in an explanatry framewrk which tgether with the sub wrks frms the dissertatin. Fr admissins as frm 1 July 2007 and fr applicatins fr public defences prir t 1 January 2009 The number f sub wrks in a cmpilatin dissertatin is t be nt less than 3-4 riginal pieces depending n the quality and scpe, f which nt less than 2 have been accepted fr publicatin in referee-reviewed publicatins and anther 1-2 submitted fr publicatin at the latest when the grade bard is appinted. In the case f sub wrks included in a dissertatin, the pstgraduate student s wrk shall be clearly discernible. Fr admissins as frm 1 July 2007 and fr applicatin fr public defences as frm 1 January 2009 A cmpilatin dissertatin fr a PhD shall cmprise at least tw sub wrks, and nrmally nt mre than fur. The exact number depends n the quality and scpe f the sub wrks as well as, nt least, the rle f the dctral student in creating the respective sub wrks. The pstgraduate student s cntributin must be clearly discernible. Assessment as t whether the presented dissertatin wrk with cmpleted curses equates t fur years full-time study and attains a gd internatinal standard is dne thrugh the grade bard s preview and cnclusively by FUN. At least tw sub wrks shall be accepted/published in referee-reviewed publicatins with internatinal distributin, r be pen access publicatins with referee prcedures. The pstgraduate student shall be the principal authr f at least ne f the wrks. The pstgraduate student shall have participated in all parts f the publicatin prcess fr scientific articles. If fewer than fur sub wrks are invlved in the dissertatin, the summary, s-called kappa, is included in the applicatin fr the public defence. (This last cnditin applies fr applicatin fr public defences as frm 1 July 2009.) All dissertatins at HU are t adhere t the LiU/HU graphic prfile. 7 Licentiate dissertatin Fr students admitted as frm 1 July 2007 and fr applicatins fr public defences prir t 1 January 2009 The number f sub wrks in a cmpilatin dissertatin is t be nt less than tw riginal articles, f which at least ne has been accepted fr publicatin in a referee-reviewed publicatin and the ther submitted fr publicatin at the latest when the grade bard is appinted. In the case f sub wrks included in a licentiate dissertatin, the pstgraduate student s wrk shall be clearly discernible. Sub wrks are t be set in an explanatry framewrk which tgether with the sub wrks frms the licentiate dissertatin. Credits are t be registered in Ladk n applying fr a public defence. A midpint review takes the frm f an pen seminar, and is t be dne by every pstgraduate student taking a PhD. The seminar shall take place at the latest during the term after ne f the cnditins, a r b, has been met: when ne manuscript is accepted fr publicatin and ne manuscript is submitted fr assessment. when the equivalent f 1.5 years f pstgraduate study has been cmpleted 7 (8)
