3 Mobile & Smart Classrooms? To facilitate the integration of technology in the classroom environment, many of Sheridan s classrooms, labs, auditoriums, and studios contain presentation podiums with equipment such as VCR/DVD combos, document cameras, desktop computers and data projectors. There are two types of rooms which have podiums A Smart Room A Mobile room these rooms are also equipped with tables which provide data and power for laptop use for each student and networked printers

7 Data Projector No need to touch the actual projector Powered on by remote control Takes a few minutes to warm up Secured to ceiling in cages Projectors have screamers which are triggered by projector movement View looking up to ceiling
8 When the projector is turned on Signal Source Signal Detection message Screen tells you What the signal source is The source of a signal is either a computer, a DVD or VHS tape, or the image from the document camera Whether that signal source is sending any data In this example, a computer was selected as the signal source but has not been connected so no input *See following slides for more info
9 What is a Podium? Your presentation station Your way to use A/V equipment in the classroom Designed at Sheridan Fairly standardized equipment but you need to learn how to operate the equipment

12 How to use the equipment overview Turn on the projector Unlock the podium Cable your laptop if needed Use the remote to select the device you want to use as the output After your class, power off all devices & projector and close the podium door Please check that the podium is locked after you close it
13 Unlocking the Podium Combination lock on handle NB: Combination is sent to faculty by each academic year. It is not available to students Turn handle clockwise Tip: if you enter the wrong combination, turn the handle counterclockwise to reset the lock
14 How to use the data projector We have two different data projector manufacturers on campus - NEC and Canon. Instructions for using each of them are slightly different. For each of them the following slides show How to turn it on What the controls on the remote do

16 The NEC Remote Power ON and OFF
17 Turning on the NEC Projector 1. Turn projector on holding the power on button on the remote down while aiming the remote at the remote sensor. Don t just click the power button hold it down 2. Please be patient. It takes a minute or two to warm up. The light of the projector lens comes on after several seconds & Sheridan image appears on screen 3. If the projector does not come on after a reasonable amount of time Check that the batteries are installed correctly Turn off the classroom lights and repeat step one
18 Working with the Projector Once the projector is on, you can select the input source that will provide the image and control the focus and volume if needed The data projectors will time out [ shut themselves off ] after 30 minutes if they do not receive a signal For example, if you were using the data projector to show a slide show and then start a class activity that lasts longer than 30 minutes, the data projector will time out and turn off

20 How to select the image to be projected Press Video once to project the VCR/DVD image Press RGB to project the desktop or laptop image Press Video twice to project the document camera image
21 How to turn the NEC projector OFF 1. Press the OFF button You will see a message on the screen asking you to confirm that the projector should be shut down 2. Press the Enter button to shut down

23 The Canon Remote Power ON and OFF Power button does both jobs
24 Turning on the Canon Projector 1. Turn projector on holding the power on button on the remote down while aiming the remote at the remote sensor. Just click the power button once 2. The light of the projector lens comes on after a couple of seconds and you will hear an audible beep 3. If the projector does not come on after a reasonable amount of time Check that the batteries are installed correctly Check that the remote sensor is connected. There should be a red signal when it is working
25 Working with the Projector Once the projector is on, you can select the input source that will provide the image and control the focus and volume if needed Once turned on, the Canon data projectors will check for activity. If the projector is idle for 30 seconds, a little timer will be displayed in the bottom right hand corner of the screen showing a countdown for 5 minutes. If, after 5 minutes, there is no activity, the projector will turn off
26 Canon volume & zoom control & blank picture Volume control Zoom There is no focus button on the Canon remote. If the projector is out of focus please call the appropriate ITSC No Show Turns the picture into a black image
27 How to select the image to be projected Press Computer 1 to project the laptop or desktop image There are 2 possible settings that appear Analog RGB1 and Digital RGB. If necessary, press again to select Analog RGB
28 How to select the image to be projected Press Computer 2 to project the document camera image There are 2 possible settings that appear Analog RGB1 and Digital RGB. If necessary, press again to select Analog RGB
29 How to select the image to be projected Press VIDEO/S to project the VCR/DVD image
30 How to turn the Canon projector OFF 1. Press the Power button 2. When you see the following message appear on the screen, push the power button again + Power off Push POWER button again to turn off power
31 NEC Press RGB Connecting a laptop You can cable your ThinkPad or Apple laptop Apples need an extra connector You can connect to the internet If you need sound, you can connect the audio cable [our data projectors have built in speakers] Canon Press COMPUTER 1
32 Connect Laptop (IBM ThinkPad) Connect these cables to your laptop Network AC Power Audio in VGA Data Projector
33 ThinkPads to project the image Press 2 keys, Fn + F7 to toggle among 3 modes: Screen only Computer only Screen and computer Fn + F
34 Connect Laptop Apple ibook Before you go to class make sure you have an ibook connector which can be signed out from the ITSC In class, turn on the data projector FIRST Next, attach the ibook connector to the VGA cable and then insert the USB end into your laptop Power your laptop and if needed connect your audio and network cable Connect to VGA USB Connect to laptop
35 NEC Press Video twice Using the Document Camera You can put physical objects on a document camera computer chip, newspaper clippings, fabric etc. You can put paper on the document camera and write on it [use it like a whiteboard] You can demonstrate a manual operation such as an origami fold by putting your hands under the camera Canon Press COMPUTER 2
36 To set up the document camera Unlock podium Pull out drawer on right hand side Place finger in small hole latch Hold down base; lift camera up gently Turn camera lens down toward work surface Turn power on Turn Power on [base of camera] Turn camera lens down
37 To focus images from the document camera Auto Focus Turn off when writing on material Zoom in Zoom out
38 NEC Press Video once Using the VCR/DVD combo All podiums were retrofitted with DVD/VCR combos over the summer of 2006 Canon Press VIDEO/S
39 To use the VCR or DVD Turn power on VCR/DVD combo Insert cassette/dvd Because there are different models of VCR/DVD combos in our classrooms, you control the forward, rewind, & stop functions using the controls on the device itself
40 Classrooms with sound systems All data projectors have speakers. But some larger classrooms and classrooms which have air plenums also have additional speakers and microphones
41 Classrooms with sound systems locations Trafalgar B124, B125 S138, S139 S142, S144 S231, S235 S301, S302 S319, S320 J102 Davis B213 B310 B222 B111a M25 C101 Portable Microphone may or may not be inside the podium The audio systems in these 2 rooms are located in black audio cabinets behind the podium. Faculty who want to use the audio in these rooms need to sign out the cabinet key from the ITSC [B195]

43 Microphone controls Davis The Davis microphone has a simple on off switch
44 Using Microphones The microphones are stored inside the podiums Sound systems should already be turned on so when you turn on the microphone, the sound should work Troubleshooting no sound Make sure the microphone is on Make sure the microphone is not on mute Check the power to the receiver usually the receiver is inside the podium. Turn it on if it is off If the microphone is crackling, then its batteries are low and need replacing
45 Auditoriums with Control Systems Trafalgar auditoriums S235 and J102 and Davis auditorium H131 have touch screen control systems that are used to operate all A/V devices Additional touch screen controls appear when you select a particular device These rooms have sound systems so microphone is inside the podium If the touch screen on the control system is black, wake it up by touching it
46 S235 at Trafalgar start Touch screen, then enter the password Note: password will be sent to you via . Please do not share with students The touch panel has a built-in screen saver which will blank the image after a predetermined time. If the image is blank, touch the screen to activate the panel
47 S235 at Trafalgar Projectors For single projector operation select Right (RED) For dual images, use both Left (YELLOW) and Right (RED) Projectors Projectors descend from the ceiling takes some time The projectors can be turned off by selecting the OFF buttons above the Destinations. This will turn the projectors off without resetting other room functions
48 S235 at Trafalgar Input controls The controls on the left hand side of the control panel are for input selection [ see left ] Once you press one of them, additional controls will appear in the centre of the touch screen as in the example below showing the VCR controls

51 S235 at Trafalgar Shutting down When the presentation is complete, selecting Logout/Exit will display this logout confirmation screen. Selecting Yes will turn off the LCD, return the projector lifts and screen mask to default and return the room to a ready state. Selecting Log in as a Different User will allow an advanced user to change the access level of the touch panel without affecting a presentation. Please Turn the microphone off, put it inside the podium Close the podium door

56 CHC Davis H131 General This room is very well equipped and a touch screen interface is used to control the equipment and environment It has two projectors and a different input image can be sent to each of them or the same image to both of them You can control the lighting, sound, blinds and screens It has 3 microphones Podium mic gooseneck on podium Lavaliere wireless mic clip on Hand held wireless mic It can be used for presentation, video conferencing or both at the same time In addition to the regular podium equipment, it has two cameras [front and rear]. Images from either camera can be sent to a projector If you want to use videoconferencing, please refer to the videoconferencing manual

58 H131 Davis Environment :Screens, blinds & microphones The blinds, lighting and microphone levels have default presets. If you need to change any of those settings, press the appropriate button The hand held wireless and the Lavalier mics have an ON/OFF switch on the device itself

60 Davis H131 Projection Since there are two projectors you can either Select one input device and display it on one or both projectors Select two input devices and display one image on the left projector and the other on the right projector So in general you would Select an input device Select the projection mode Send the image to the left or right projector or both Note that you can mute the projectors. This is useful when you want to cue up a VCR or DVD before you send the image to the projector
61 H131 Davis Bright green means selected This example shows that: the lectern mic is on a laptop is the input device it is in presentation mode only [no videoconferencing] the left projector is muted So the image is being shown on the right projector

66 Help with Podium For immediate help with any of the podium components call the Help Desk 2150 Please take the time to report any problems you ve had with a data jack or desktop computer to the Help Desk
67 Additional Tips Projector Give projector time to warm up Natural & room lighting may interfere with remote power on/off Turn room lights off/cover windows to avoid problems Use remote sensor, if available to control projector
