2 CHILDHOOD Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was named after his dad, Revered Martin Luther King Sr. Martin grew up in the William s House which was named after his grandfather, Reverend A.D. Williams. The reverend was a pastor at the Ebenezer Baptist Church. Which was easy to access because of his new home. Martin was also not an only child he grew up with a sister older than him and a younger brother. Their family quickly learned the nasty and harsh reality of racial discrimination and segregation of the south United States. MLK s House Ebenezer Baptist Church

3 EDUCATION Martin went to Booker T. Washington High School. He skipped the 9 th and 12 th grades and proceeded to Morehouse College at 15 without graduating high school. In 1948 he graduated from Morehouse College with a Bachelor s Degree in sociology. Later on he enrolled in Crozer Theological Seminary. Which is in Chester, Pennsylvania. He graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity in Crozer Theological Seminary Morehouse College

4 SIBLINGS Alfred Daniel Williams King Born July 30, 1930-Died July 21, 1969 (Age 39) He was a civil rights activist and a Baptist. And the younger brother of the famous Martin Luther King Jr. Christine King Farris Born September 11, 1927 (Age 86) She is the only living, and the oldest sibling of Martin Luther King Jr.

5 WIFE Coretta Scott King was born in Heiberger, Alabama on April 27, 1927-Died January 30, She is the child of Obadiah Scott, and Bernice McMurray Scott. At an early age she was exposed to the segregated life of the southern. Coretta Scott King

6 CHILDREN Bernice Albertine King Born March 28, Bernice Albertine King is an American Baptist minister. She is the second daughter and youngest child of civil rights leaders Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King. Martin Luther King III Born October 23, Martin Luther King III is an American human rights advocate and community activist. He is the eldest son and oldest living child of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King. Dexter Scott King Born January 30, Dexter Scott King is the second son of civil rights leaders Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King. Yolanda King Born November 17, 1955-Died May 15, 2007 Yolanda Denise King was the first-born child of Coretta Scott King and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

7 MONTGOMERY BUS BOYCOTT In 1955 on a very cold December day in Montgomery, Alabama. A lady named Rosa Parks was coming home from her job on a bus sitting in the back. A white man told her to get up from her seat so he can sit there. She had said no, and moments later she was arrested. The blacks citizens of Montgomery learned about her arrest, and it made them very angry. They created a boycott where the wont ride the buses until they could sit anywhere they wanted. And they chose Martin as the leader. For a long 381 days, the boycott walked everywhere they had to go. Martin walked with them and prayed with them all the way until they could sit anywhere they wanted. Martin said this famous quote: When the history book are written someone will say there lived black people who had the courage to stand up for their rights. 8 I HAVE A DREAM August 28, 1963 is when King performed his I have a dream speech. Some famous line from that speech are: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!. Instead of ignoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check that has come back marked, insufficient funds. 9 NOBEL PEACE In 1964 Dr. King was awarded a Nobel Peace prize. At the age of 35, Martin Luther King Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. When notified of his selection, he announced that he would turn over the prize money of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement.

10 SURVIVOR? Dr. King wasn t exactly a survivor but he paved the concrete path for the blacks to survive. After ten years of protests the lawmakers in Washington voted to end segregation. All of the WHITE ONLY signs came in the South. Today, if Dr. King didn t fight for the Black Americans freedom, I wouldn t be sitting here making this presentation today. He devoted his life just to be free, and to help others. So is he a survivor? I think yes.
