The Story of Our Savior s Lutheran Church Christmas Tree Do you remember the meaning of the ornaments on our Christmas tree? Maybe you never really knew the history. Our current Christmas tree was purchased by the women of the Altar Guild in Each year members of the congregation meet on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to clean the church and decorate for the Christmas season. This includes Altar Guild, Property Board, Boy Scouts, and many other wonderful volunteers who truly enjoy helping prepare for the coming of the Christ child. Our Christmas ornaments were made by many volunteers in our church back in Women from both the Altar Guild and Lutheran Women s Missionary League shared the expense in making the ornaments. Mrs. Paul Bloechle and Mrs. Gerald Gladden were in charge of the project. The ornaments are actually called Chrismons. Chrismons were first made in 1957 by Francies Kipps Spencer, for her church, Ascension Lutheran church, in Danville, Virginia. A Chrismon is a monogram of Christ. Early Christians used them to identify themselves to one another, designate meeting places and sometimes to show unbelievers where they stood. Through the ages, the
church has found various ways of telling the Good News. We affirm these beliefs in the decoration of a Chrismon tree. Any symbols used refer to our Lord and God. All Chrismons are made in a combination of white and gold. White, the liturgical color for Christmas, refers to our Lord s purity and perfection. Gold represents his majesty and glory. Each Chrismon conveys a message. For instance, look for the Hand from Cloud. The hand descending from a cloud refers to God the Father, who created all things. The use of the hand to suggest Father-God is common throughout the Bible. Here s some more to look for: Crown of Gold The Kingship of our Lord, Jesus Christ, His victory over sin and death; His place of honor at the right Hand of God. Crown of Thorns- A representation of our Lord s crown of suffering, as told in Mark 15:17.
Fish Bearing Basket of Bread This is the Eucharistic symbol; our Lord Himself is the bread of life. This is a reminder of Our Lord s presence in Holy Communion, of our Lord s gift of himself for us. Serpent on the Cross Most people who heard Jesus of Nazareth preach did not really understand what He said. For instance, it was not until later that they realized what He meant when He said, Even as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness so must the son of Man be lifted up. Epiphany Star and Rose During the Epiphany season, the church recalls the ways in which the Child and later the Man was shown to be the Son of God. We use the five-pointed star or Epiphany Star, which the wise men followed, to symbolize this whole season.
Dove Reminds us of Christ s baptism when the spirit descended from heaven upon Him. It is the symbol for peace and Christ is called the Prince of Peace. Six Pointed Star- The creator s star is represented for six days of creation. Cross atop Orb (round ornament) The cross on a round ornament denotes Christ over the world. It also reminds us of Jesus command to go to all the world to spread the gospel.
Cross and the Crown - Through the cross, Christ achieved the victory, because of which He rules as King. Look for the gold figure 8 in the tree. The upper loop of the figure 8 proclaims the Triune God, one God who showed Himself to man in three different ways. The lower loop, read counterclockwise, shows God s most complete revelation of Himself in the Life of the Man Jesus. It starts with a symbol for Advent and ends with the Pentecost symbol. The hand descending from a cloud refers to God the Father, who created all things. The use of the hand to suggest Father-God is common throughout the Bible.
Two Greek Letters - Chi Rho which means Christ the King with the letters Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end. This cross includes the shepherd's crook to remind us that The Good Shepherd (Jesus) lays His life down for the sheep (us). Also we remember that it was the shepherds who first came to worship Jesus when He was born. The triangle and three circles is another way to show the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
This Greek cross has the letters ihs on it. These are the first 3 letters in the Greek name for Jesus [IHSOUS] (The eta is the same as our "H") In ancient times, this became a widely recognized monogram of the Christ.
