1 POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE : Registered Nurse, Division 1- Radiology REPORTS TO : Nurse Unit Manager Professional: Executive Director, Nursing AWARD : Victorian Nurses EBA 2007 CLASSIFICATION : HOURS PER WEEK : YP2-YP11 Full Time 40hrs per week (monthly ADO) 1. ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT Austin Health is one of Victoria s largest health care providers. Rotational weeknight and weekend on call requirements Comprised of Austin Hospital, Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital and Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre, Austin Health is a major teaching and research centre with numerous university and research institute affiliations. Catering to diverse multicultural and veteran communities, Austin Health delivers vital state-wide services to Victorians and a vast array of specialty services to the people of Melbourne s northeastern corridor in a safety-focussed, team-orientated and stimulating work environment. The new 400 bed Austin Hospital Tower opened mid 2005 and further redevelopment is underway. LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT The Radiology Department provides radiology services to all hospitals within Austin Health. The Repatriation Hospital serves a predominantly out-patient population while the Austin Hospital serves a predominantly in-patient population and the Department of Emergency Medicine. The Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre is serviced on two half-days per week from the Austin. The department is one of the busiest in Melbourne and is continually being upgraded, also making it one of the best equipped in Melbourne. The Austin campus has 2 Angiography suites, 1 CT scanner, 2 MRI units, 1 Fluoroscopy room, Ultrasound, and General X-ray. A satellite unit operates close to the Emergency Department for plain x-rays. The Repatriation Campus has mainly an outpatient clientele, and has 2 CT scanners, 1 Fluoroscopy unit, Ultrasound, Breast Screen, and General X-ray facilities. Royal Talbot has a General X-ray service, but Radiology Nursing staff do not work at this location. The Radiology Nursing staff aim to provide excellent standards of patient care, in collaboration within a multi-disciplinary health care team. Standards of care are developed, maintained and continuously reviewed, and updated. Staff are supported clinically and professionally by all staff, Clinical Support Nurses, and the Clinical Nurse Educator. The Radiology Department, itself, provides extensive educational resources and programs to support the development of staff. A number of clinical radiological meetings are held each week and staff members are encouraged to attend wherever possible. The department strongly supports and encourages staff taking advantage of external educational opportunities and provides assistance to staff doing so. 3. POSITION OBJECTIVE The role of a Radiology Nurse is to provide patient care for patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional radiological procedures. Radiology Nurses provide pre, peri and post examination care for patients undergoing General X-ray, CT, MRI, and Ultrasound. Radiology Nurses also provide pre, peri and post procedure care for patients undergoing CT, Ultrasound, Fluoroscopy and Angiography guided procedures such as biopsies, drain tube insertions, central line insertions and peripheral angiograms. The duties of a Radiology Nurse include but are not limited to: - Preparation of patients undergoing examinations such as Ultrasound, CT and MRI, including IV Cannulation. - Admission of patients undergoing procedures such as biopsy, drainage, and Angiography. - Assistance in the performance of radiology procedures including Scrub and Circulation Nurse roles. - Administration of Conscious Sedation. - Assistance with patient positioning for imaging scans. - Post procedure care, recovery and discharge. - Escorting of patients post examination/procedure to wards. - Education of patients and their families.

3 - Provide an expert resource to wards and departments involved in the care of patients requiring specific services of the department. - Facilitate and promote a team approach within the department. Radiology Nurses work Monday to Friday with hours varying from They perform weeknight and weekend overtime and on-call duties as rostered and required. Nursing staff are required to work at both the Austin and Repatriation Campus Radiology facilities. 4. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Generic Abide by Austin Health corporate policies and practices as varied from time to time. Participate in Austin Health performance appraisal program as required. Undertake not to reveal to any person or entity any confidential information relating to patients and employees, policies, processes and dealings and not to make public statements relating to the affairs of Austin Health without prior authority of the Chief Executive. Participate in the emergency incident response activities, as defined within the Emergency Response Manual, as and when required, at the direction of management. Position specific Provision of patient centred, safe, effective and accountable nursing care. Practices in accordance with ANMC Code of Professional Conduct, Code of Ethics and Competencies for the Registered Nurse. Actively promote and undertake Continuing Professional Development of self and others, and documentation of same. Practices in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Organisational requirements. The position requires the wearing of protective lead clothing to comply with radiation safety precautions. Commitment to Evidence Based Practice. Maintain accreditation in mandatory competencies including Basic Life Support, Intravenous Cannulation, E Fire Training, E Bullying and Harassment and E Hand Hygiene. Manage unit resources responsibly, efficiently and effectively. Contribute to an environment of multidisciplinary teamwork, maintaining a flexible approach to working in different localities serviced by the unit. Additional duties as required by the role, as varied from time to time. Meets the key selection criteria essential for the performance of the position.

Strong organisational, communication, interpersonal and time management skills. Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development of self and others. Ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team. Competence in the use of Information Technology. Commitment to maintain current knowledge of procedures, policies, regulations and standards of the department and organization. Accountability for nursing practice. Commitment to undertake requirements of the role as varied from time to time IV Cannulation. Wearing of lead personal protective equipment. Flexibility for overtime and On Call requirements (overnight and 24hr weekend coverage) as rostered and required. Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations. Commitment to quality, practice with evidence based principles and environmental safety. Able to work at Austin and Repat Campuses in all patient care areas- Computerised Tomography, Ultrasound, Fluoroscopy, Angiography, MRI, In-patient Waiting Room and Outpatient procedure Recovery ECG Rhythm recognition skills. Administration of conscious sedation, monitoring and recovery of patients peri and post procedure. Desirable but not Essential for Performance of Position Previous experience in Radiology, Day procedure, Scrubbing/Scouting Nursing roles. Willingness to be involved with Special Interest Group. 6.
