2 Dear Future Recreation Professional, The Grand Beach Diamond Resorts International in Orlando, Florida, understands that it is an exciting time in your life, as your strive to towards finishing your academic career and entering the professional arena. Therefore, your internship is a very important aspect in that transition. We are also proud to be an approved internship site through Resort & Commercial Recreation Association (RCRA) for The Grand Beach staff can welcome you with a successful experience created to give personal and professional opportunities in the hospitality industry. The Grand Beach Resort is located in the heart of all the world famous Orlando attractions had to offer. We think our internship program can help you to excel in the recreation field by offering the following: *Exposure to a diverse resort with daily activities *Kid s, Teen and Family Program facilitation *Water sport rentals *Gain an overall understanding and purpose of a resort *Provide a positive role model by being friendly and professional *Independently plan, program, market and implement events *Complete daily, weekly and monthly budgets *Welcome and interact with all guests at the resort Enclosed, please find detailed information on our recreation internship program. 3 General Work Information Working Hours An intern will work a minimum of 40 hours per week at $9.00 an hour and time and half for any time worked over 40 hours. The Activities Director will schedule these hours. Assignments may be worked on during scheduled free time or may be done outside of scheduled time. An Intern will work the hours necessary to get his/her job done. Meals Interns are allowed to use free time between activities for meals. The intern is to notify the supervisor if he/she wishes to leave the resort for his/her meal. Attire During warm periods, khaki shorts and navy shirt (to be provided), and nametag are to be worn everyday the intern is scheduled to work. During cool periods, a jacket will be provided. Interns are asked to provide their own conservative swimwear, pants and white sneakers. Also a close toe type water shoe can be used when working water sports. Illness The intern s supervisor should be notified as soon as possible when the intern will not be able to work due to illness. Compensation You will be paid an hourly rate of $9.00 an hour, plus time and ½ for over 40 hours. Housing All housing is through OASIS housing in Orlando. Contact to apply for housing. There is a $200 refundable security deposit and $100 processing fee. Double occupancy rooms are $450 a month. The apartments are fully furnished, local phone service, cable TV, wireless internet access, all dishware, washer and dryer, and a monthly cleaning service. 1 st and last month rent is due 30 days prior to your semester start date. Available Resources Each intern will have available to them the use of the office computer, fax machine, telephone and all company books and resources. Problems and Grievances Problems should first be discussed with the immediate supervisor. Together a plan of action can be developed to alleviate the situation. If there is a question of policy or proper action, discuss it with the supervisor first. She/he will discuss with you the best course of action to take. Diamond Resorts International 3
4 Use of Facilities Resort facilities are not to be used by employees on non-working days. Transportation Interns are to provide transportation to and from work. It is recommended to have your own transportation. Housing is about 1.5 miles from the resort. Phone Calls Personal phone call may be received in any emergency situation. No personal phone calls may be made from work unless on a break. Phone calls to your Academic Advisor may be made from and accepted at work. Schedule Requests If a specific date(s) is wanted off, fill out a schedule request form and turn it in to the supervisor as soon as possible. Also, any prior obligations must be communicated to management before hire. Example a wedding. Drug or Alcohol Abuse The use of drugs and alcohol products on the job is strictly prohibited. Use may result in termination. Written/Verbal Warnings If a serious situation occurs a written or verbal warning may be issued. After three warnings the internship may be terminated. Visitations Any necessary visitations from your university advisor must be scheduled in advance. After a time has been decided upon the intern must inform the Activities Director so that this may be added to the schedule. Failure to schedule visitations will result in lowering of the intern s grade Diamond Resorts International 4
5 Responsibilities of the Recreation Department To prepare the staff for the arrival of the student. To orient the student to the resort, facilities, materials and resources the department uses. To confer with the student to determine his/her course of action during the internship experience and to present an overview of the department purposes, polices, administration, programs and facilities. To inform the student of all regulations with which he/she must abide. To present the student to the agency staff as a professional coworker. To encourage the highest of standards and to praise the student for work well done; to counsel with the student in areas in which he/she does not meet professional entry level standards. To present criticisms in a constructive, objective manner (student should remember that evaluations are done for self-improvement). To keep continuous records of the student s work and progress. To be objective as well as facilitate conferences with the student, college supervisor and final evaluation report. To follow requirements made by the University/College regarding communication. 6 Responsibility of the Student Familiarize yourself with the regulations and policies pertaining to the department. Plan thoroughly and in advance of all assignments. Report to all activities at least 15 minutes prior to the time due and stay to clean afterwards. Perform all work assignments to the best of your ability. Work the times and days assigned to you, including evenings and weekends. Be well groomed and appropriately dressed for all assignments. Notify your supervisor well in advance for specific days off. Be tactful, friendly, courteous and respectful to all. Remember, other staff members have jobs to do. They will be happy to help you if you use good judgment in what you ask of them (this is a give and take job). Attend assigned meetings unless specifically told otherwise. Become involved in anything that may arise. Show initiative and creativeness and make constructive suggestions or proposals if you have them. Evaluate each meeting or activity that has been planned and conducted. To abide by all rules and regulations of the University or College. Diamond Resorts International 6
7 Assignments and Projects Prior to the beginning of each internship, staff members cooperatively produce a project and assignment list. A project will be assigned at the beginning of the internship. Remember assignment sheets are flexible and can be changed after some discussion. One project will include designing the interns own special event. 8 Evaluations The intern will be evaluated a minimum of two times throughout the internship. The immediate supervisor will complete a midterm and final evaluation. The evaluation will include verbal as well as written feedback. It is important that both the intern and the supervisor discuss any concerns, questions or comments that they may have. Remember an evaluation is conducted to help a student succeed. Qualifications Junior or Senior in college with a major in Recreation or another related field. Infant/Child CPR & First Aid and lifesaving preferable. Flexible and willing to work a variety of shifts, and holidays. Able to interact with all age groups; kids, adults, and teens. Possess a strong commitment to the importance of Recreation. Interns are accepted on a minimum of twelve weeks, although may be extended depending of the season provided by the intern, resort, and school agreement. Other I would also suggest that each student become a member of RCRA (Resort & Commercial Recreation Association).
